The Star Wars: The Lost Workprint (* unfinished project - lots of info *)

Can anybody suggest a shot from something I can use for the Falcon going into Hyperdrive? As in, blasting off into the distance with a loud bang. Was trying to find footage from ST:TOS but having no luck.

HELP!!!

btw Found this on my YouTube favourites from way back. Pretty much the greatest thing on YouTube:

...soooooooo was anything done to fix the continuity mistake in terms cutting in cave? You know how Luke swipes 10-meters away from the Wampa and the arm falls into frame?

Every time I ask this question, people go off on a tangent about icicles and music and things that don't need to be changed.

I'm merely asking if this was even addressed by ady.

There is no mistake there at all. Look closely at that scene again. The Wampa is hell of a lot closer than you think. Plus Luke is lunging forward as he takes the swing. He only cuts the arm off below the elbow, although they really screwed it up in the special edition and had the whole arm severed.

Seconded Adywan.

Luke raises his saber and the Wampa is a 2 or 3 feet away...

Luke swings and the Wampa is 1 or 2 feet away...

The Wampa gets closer still after that shot and lets remember a Wampa has huge long arms like an Orangutan. As Adywan says Luke only chops the lower half the Wampa's arm off (Or even just a third). So nothing wrong with this scene at all in the theatrical cut.

If you're only watching the SE Asteroid-Man. Then yes the distance in the scene is all wrong (But what do you expect, it's the SE after all).

Never read any of the Thrawn stuff, it didn't sit right with me. A blue skinned Imperial Admiral?

I always thought it was implicit in the OT that the Empire were basically Nazis. They dressed that way, their whole world was monochromatic grey, they were all middle-aged or old, arrogant, white, short haired men. SW was never as Politcs-heavy as Star Trek but this idea is for me just one thing that makes the Empire so loathsome. Think of moments like when you can imagine the collective disgust on the bridge of the Executor when all the strange looking bounty hunter "Scum" are assembled.

The Rebels on the other hand where a non-discriminating, multi ethnic alliance. Made up of young idealistic kids and old experienced fighters. They embraced men and women in positions of power equally. The rebels also were quite comfortable letting their hair down (Literally). In ROTJ (When ILM had a bigger budget and greater experience/confidence) we see the alliance is also made up of other aliens like Admiral Ackbar and Lando's co-pilot Nien Nunb. In short, these were the kind of people and ideals I identified with.

Making an overt scripted reference to these two opposing world views would be out of character with SW (As I said, more of a ST thing).  It never felt right to me that Palpatine's closest confidants in the PT were a blue skinned, tentacled Chagrian and various alien women. For me this made the PT Palpatine that little bit less evil than the guy I remembered from ROTJ, holding court in his throne room surrounded by sycophantic, sinister old men. Although Papatine ordering Anakin to go off to mustafar and murder all the strange aliens that Palpatine had seen fit to exploit and decieve in his rise to power, was spot on.

About the Easter Egg with a bunch of Nooooooo's, I say do it lol.  Just thinking about Vader when Luke falls will be bloody hilarious!

And speaking on the subject of Wampas, wouldn't it have been cool if Ady and Co.  recreated that deleted scene to take out some Stormtroopers etc.  Could even hire that Vader actor to get a little more involved too.

My dream is Disney doing a seemlessly branched Blu-Ray boxset of the OT from a brandnew new 4K/wetgate/70mm/allthatjazz scan. It could be branched into 3 versions:

1. Absolutely untouched versions.

2. Adywan style "Fixed" versions that are improved at a technical level but not fundamentaly changed.

3. A new fully pimped out 'Super Special Edition' with every single deleted scene put in, cleaned up, re-scored and redubbed. The whole show. Hell re-do all the special effects from scratch while your at it.

Think that package would please everybody. It's not beyond the wit of man.

My Blade Runner and Avatar boxsets have got 3 seemlessly-branched versions, result. Also my 10x Star Trek movie boxset has two cuts of every film branched for my optional enjoyment (Ditto my Alien(s) boxset). My Star Trek OS Blu-Rays have two branched versions of every episode, updated or original (Your choice).

Probably too much to hope for.

I presume Kenner had reference material for this.

Yoda's outfit isn't quite like Ben's sans cloak.

I think it's safe to say a decision was made on ROTJ that all Jedi outfits be similar to Obi Wan's, without considering he was trying to hide on a backwater planet all those years.

I hope Luke still wears black in the sequels.

Whenever I see that figure it takes me back to laughing my ass off to Adam & Joe's Star Wars spoofs late night on channel 4 in the UK during the '90s.

"Send it in to You've Been Framed should you, £50 smackers it is... share it with you will I" (Or something like that)

If you don't know what I'm talking about. Imagine Robot Chicken does Star Wars only about twenty years earlier.

Just had a thought about this "It's stupid that the PT decided that Jedi robes should be like Alec Guiness' costume" discussion. When I first saw photos from TPM I never saw anything strange about the Jedi robes looking like this because...

and

and

Jedi were envisioned as Samurai...

...plain and simple.*

Yes Owen's costume is similar:

But I never noticed this as a kid and if you've got an issue with it it's down to the first OT film. This lady isn't a Samurai for example:

The Jedi look was started in ANH, firmly estabablished in ESB and further cemented in ROTJ. The PT got many things wrong but this isn't one of them.

*Oh and BTW the above epic Samurai pic is from Masaki Kobayashi's 1962 film 'Harakiri'. GO BUY IT NOW!!!

I like it. As you say though the Vader dialogue is pretty familiar. I wonder if you might be able to get a fresh line or two from the Star Wars Interactive Board Game. I think the torrent in on MySpleen.

Thanks. Is that one of those old VHS play along board games? Had the Klingon Star Trek one, it was a blast.

Can't find SW game on MySpleen :-(

Just a short test this time, of the Vader/Bast conversation. Click image to play:

This is my attempt to 'create' some dialogue for Vader to say during this deleted conversation with Bast. The original raw footage had David Prowse delivering some muffled and almost in-audible lines on set. As James Earl Jones is the voice of Vader in the other 99% of my cut, I needed him in this scene to. I've also overlayed some classic John Williams music.

See if you can spot where the dialogue came from (It's not too hard lol).

I'm still to make the absolute final decision where this will sit in the cut. But I'll probably be putting this diectly after the scene with Tarkin deciding to fly off to Alderaan. So these two scenes will link together and flow naturally into the next stormtrooper search of mos esiley scene. This raises the possibility of introducing a 'Scene missing - shows death star going to hyperspace' intertitle. Unless anybody can suggest any "Giant round thing going to warp" footage from another pre '77 sci-fi flick/TV show????

Ryan really enjoyed this^ well done. Not really any suggestions how to make this better as your stuck with odds and ends of the Jabba clip, concerning the cantina clip have you tried just lowering the music so we can hear the on set noises cutting in and out, yes it feels rough but thats half the point of a recreation of a workprint I reckon.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'll probably go back in at some point in the editing process and construct a complete 'on set' audio effects track for the 2nd half of the cantina. Then I'll be able to turn the music down a bit and let the effects track do more of the work. But I definately don't want the audio popping in and out, that just makes the scene hard to enjoy for me.

Here's another test. Click the image below to see the video:

Things to note:

- Fixed music/silence problem (From last test) after Han kills Greedo.
- Edited raw stormtrooper search deleted footage and created new audio mix to blend into existing sequence.
- Cut in original Jabba scene using Jambe Davdar's reconstruction as the basis.
- All Jabba scene footage re-cropped and composed to minimise visual problems.
- 'Jabba credits' probllem covered with flipped cut away
- Bast/Vader scene still to work in at the end*

*need suggestions on how to fix the audio in this scene

Just lost the fully complete Jabba scene I'd finished a second before. My computer is going out the window rockstar-in-hotel style!

Anyway...

I'm editing this next:

Does anybody have James Earl Jones doing the lines from this scene or saying something similar????

The dialogue goes:

Bast: "We've closed the spaceport of Mos Eisley and started a search operation, it's just a matter of time before we find the droids"

Vader: Says 3 or 4 lines about how because Leia hopes the rebels will get the plans, she's still able to resist the mind probe.

Bast: "Til then we waste time with Governor Tarkin's foolish plan to break her"

Vader: Says nothing for the rest of the scene but he could say something, possibly ???

And before anybodys says. Yes I know there is a Holiday special version but I don't want to use that if I can avoid it. As like everything else in that travesty the dialogue is bad.

Beautifully edited and lovely music (I genuinely got quite emotional) but sadly it doesn't solve or explain any of the moral problems I highlighted.

Although I found this brief clip emotional, if it was sitting in the context of ROTS. I would just be too busy thinking WTF?! That makes no sense?! to derive any enjoyment from it.

That's the easy part solved. Now a faneditor needs to find a way to explain why Padme has abandoned Luke?

As long as it isn't adding an extra shot of Vader looking down at luke falling and going "Noooooooooooooooo!".

Hmm, now you have given me an idea.........

;)

It would be a funny easter egg for the project to add Vader going "Noooooooooooo" into every concievable scene like I'm sure Lucas would like to do.

After Falcon blasts out of Hoth Hanger bay... "Noooooooooooo"

Luke knocks vader down with that gaspipe in Bespin "Noooooooooooo"

After R2 repairs the hyperdrive "Noooooooooooo"

two birds one stone give it a go if it sounds crap then... Shame, I always wanted to hear that tune in cantina though

It's in there brother! Works really nicely too, in that old-western style post-shoot-out-piano way.

It's only about 5 seconds as Han is strolling out. But you don't get much cooler than blowing a bounty hunter away then nonchalantly exiting to an Amiga music.

I F*CKING LOOOVED SHUFFLE PUCK CAFE!!!

The computer player Lexan who was an ace shuffle puck player but would get steadily more drunk if you started to beat him was the best. You needed to swipe your mouse super fast from one side to the other at just the right time to beat him. That youtube guy needed telling lol.

Love Amiga music generally (Especially where Sensible Software were concerned) but I think an endless loop of that 3 seconds of music would be difficult to use. I WISH I could find a way though.

Amiga games didn't get much better than...

An add for the (British) Empire would be awesome. Wonder if there enough newsreel footage talking about the "Empire" to cut well with SW footage?
