The Star Wars: The Lost Workprint (* unfinished project - lots of info *)
Time

The first half of 'The Lost Workprint' (70mins) is now available to download upon request...

I welcome any feedback and would especially welcome input on sourcing alternate/Temp FX footage for the rest of the edit. As now I've got to start the difficult task of approaching the FX heavy Death Star rescue and Yavin finale.

There is the odd tweak needed here and there but basically this is 99% how the first 70mins will look. Thanks to those that have suggested ideas already and posted links to clips. Keep it up guys n gals!

Did a little searching online and found this quote from the ROTJ novel,

" We fought ... your father fell into a molten pit. When your father clawed his way out of that fiery pool, the change had been burned into him forever — he was Darth Vader, without a trace of Anakin Skywalker. Irredeemably dark. Scarred. Kept alive only by machinery and his own black will ... "

I also found that in a pre-Empire Strikes Back interview with Mark Hamill, he mentions that he was told his character's father and Obi-Wan fought Darth Vader over a volcano, and both Luke's father and Vader fall in, with Vader managing to survive.

Good work!

That explains where that all came from. I never read that book or caught the Hamill interview. But the details must have passed from one kid who had, to another, then another in those pre-internet days until it reached my school playground in the North of England lol

I agree with imperialscum, saying, "The Force runs strong in my family" doesn't have to mean it is hereditary. It is like saying, "Faith runs strong in my family" indicating that the family holds to religious values and are strong believers.

Anakin having been a Jedi, and now Luke becoming a Jedi, are enough to warrant the comment about the Force being strong in Luke's family without inferring that it must mean that the ability to use the Force, or how well you can use it, is somehow genetic.

Pre PT. I always imagined the force as more of a mental thing. The skywalker family just are strong in this way. Kinda like a seer, or mystic. Not a physical thing, but they have some kind of evolved mental energy. It is passed down but not in such an explicit way as "You've got more of these things floating in your blood than that guy".

A question:

I always remember growing up with the image of Anakin and Obi-Wan dueling in a Volcano (Or at a push a lava planet) firmly fixed in my mind. Me, my brothers and my friends. So where did I get this notion from? An article? A EU book? An interview?

Fascinating article and kinda sad. Most of the time with films it takes time for writers to do draft after draft to iron out plot problems and manage satifactory character arcs. But not Lucas, no he had it all in place back in the day, then went back in and introduced extra plot problems. wtf??

e.g. "Leia and Luke’s mother go to Alderaan and are taken in by the king"

Why did you make Bail Organa a Senator George? It makes NO sense that his daughter grows up to be a princess! *sigh*

Although it's interesting to note that the "Seduction of power" plot element...

"(Papatine) was a politician. Richard M. Nixon was his name. He subverted the senate and finally took over and became an imperial guy and he was really evil. But he pretended to be a really nice guy. He sucked Luke’s father into the dark side."

...was fully filmed during principle photograhy on ROTS. But Lucas went back in during post-production and rewrote much of the dialogue and called his main cast back for pickups, to change Anakin's fall to be about losing Padme. All of this material is sitting on a tape somewhere in the Lucas archive but I doubt it will ever see the light of day.

Just stumbled across this old shot of the original Bail from TPM again. I never realised what his costume reminded me of before...

"Loooone Staaar!!!"

Recently got the 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray of Spaceballs and was amazed that the FX still hold up and actually looked better than the PT! How is it that Mel Brooks could make a better follow up to the OT than Lucas?

btw has anybody got a hi-res scan of the top Alderaan image of this pair of paintings...

I know that Audio from the Game that Darth Ender supplied you with...

lol a lot of it is no good... But it is james earl jones and it almost sounds identical to vader...

The use of lines is good.... There is a bit too much high and high mid frequencies in the Vader voice though and in general... What are you using to do the edit with?

I cleaned it up a bit but I suggest you clean up each sound element individually and then mix them together it's way too toppy overall while the music sounds fine

Great work ronster! I'm less fussy about audio fidelity than I usually would be, given the workprint nature of this project.

But this is the kind of help I'm needing from forum members. I can give you the audio without the music if you want to have a play with it?

I'm editing in 'Nero Vision Xtra' btw

p.s. Do you think there is anything that can be done with the technician shouting over Bast's line at the end? I minimised it significantly in the mix but it's still there.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

Originally I was hesitant to embrace Abrams as a director for new Star Wars, but my surprising enjoyment of his first Trek installment gave me hope. After seeing Star Trek Into Darkness last Wednesday I'm extremely worried/anxious about Star Wars VII. At this point I don't feel like it can or will be good.

Of course I'll have tickets the second they're made available and will take off work to see the first showing - because I'm a sucker for Star Wars and Disney knows no matter what they do they'll rake in my money.

Kinda why alot of blockbusters suck. The studios know we'll all go and see them anyway.  Even if early reviews said the new trilogy made the holiday special look like ESB we'd all still queue for tickets.

If every SW fan in the world signed a solem promise and posted it to Disney to not go see episodes VIII and IX, or ever again buy another piece of SW merch if episode VII sucked. Then you'd be guarenteed that episode VII would be a masterpiece lol

^This looks stunning!

How much of your falcon is scratchbuilt and how much is modified AMT/ERTL? It looks 100% scratchbuilt to me.

The weathering in that last photo is great work.

It's got a certain elegance in it's forms and shapes that the film Falcon prop doesn't have. I think Luke's "What a piece of junk!" line would seem even more misjudged.

I'm not an anime fan, and have never gotten into any anime at all, but for some weird reason I can't explain, I've always wished they'd make a Star Wars anime series or adaption of the films.

I kind of wish this new series was at least drawn instead of CG as well, but as long as they ditch the Clone Wars style CG, I think it still have the potential to be pretty cool looking.

I assume you mean "Have never gotten into any anime at all. . .    except 1988's Akira".

If not, then you're missing out on action scenes like this...  (Taken from the Blu-Ray).

Surely the pinnacle of the hand-drawn animated art form.

Thanks to daneditor's suggestion to use dialogue from 'Star Wars: The Interactive Boardgame' and darth_ender's kind uploading of said game. I've been able to create new dialogue for Vader that is unique to this scene instead of re-hashing lines from elsewhere in the OT. Thought I'd show it in colour as you can already see how the BW version looks anyway, on my Vimeo channel.

The scene is much improved, thanks guys!

You don't need to (and shouldn't) assign an episode number to the adventures of some CW pretty boy pretending to be a Jedi. If that's Disney's game plan, they can do idiotic crap like that in one of the standalone movies.
Just wanted to reiterate this now that Jonathan Rhys Meyers' name is floating around.

This ones just for you...

and HOLY SH*T I now know what GL was talking about in '97 when he said SW didn't finish up looking how he imagined it:

^ That's going in my workprint fanedit for sure!

That painting was done for a book in the mid 90s.

Really? I did not know that, I've always thought it was original art. What book would that be?

??? Can anybody settle this? When was it painted? If it's pre '77 I'll use it in my edit, if was done in the '90s probably not.

Chewie looks too Episode Three-y... the real four look great though!

Damn you! Yes, my eyes had spotted that already, but they weren't gonna tell my brain, so it could pretend that the above photo was perfect in every way! lol

Has anybody been able to explain why PT Chewie looks odd to all of us?

Yes it's another newly made costume. But I can never pinpoint what it is about the new costume that looks wrong.

I could pinpoint exactly what was wrong with PT puppet Yoda... everything!

But PT chewie... not so easy.
