ESB question
Time

Had a thought. Harry Potter is a fun, action packed fantasy that is aimed at an audience younger than SW, but it still found time to deal with slavery. Dobby the house-elf is gobsmacked when Harry treats him like a "Human being". Then Hermoine forms a committee to campaign for Elf rights.

It's all quite lighthearted but the slavery issue is dealt with, reflecting well on our hereos and throwing the wickedness of the villains into sharp relief.

Luke's the only character that really shows any love and care for the droids. Like when he thinks R2 has been eaten by the Dagobah giant fish thing. I always got the feeling R2 was luke's best friend.

THREEPIO: Oh, no! I've been shot!

This is a very dramatic moment. We laugh because it's 3CPO, he's a robot. Yet think of a human in a similar situation: imagine a soldier resurrected from the dead, recalling that moment. "So we were assaulting that position, I threw a grenade towards that MG nest and... wait, that's when I took the bullet!?!?"

Creepy. That's why ESB is so grand.

Yes the whole Droid/humanity thing is quite vague in SW (OT and PT). The Droids appear to have human emotions, feelings and frailties. But all the "good" characters are perfectly fine with...

- Kidnapping, keeping and trading them as slaves. Especially in ANH with things like "restraing bolts".

- Wiping their memories and personalities.

- Sometimes not giving a sh*t when they die. Like Ben's "Friend" of 3 or 4 years, R4.

- Abusing and torturing them, verbally and physically. They feel pain, but who cares.

- Massacring them in huge numbers in the PT.

- *

- Generally treating them as beneath second-class beings. But still quite happy to have them as bounty-hunters or generals if they have need of it.

- Using them for situations too dangerous for precious humans. Like repairing Naboo royal starship engines, scouting Jabba's palace or serving drinks to irritable Jedi.

A lot of other classic Sci-Fi Film and TV has central themes of Robotic-Humanity e.g. BSG, Blade Runner, A.I., Aliens, TNG etc etc but Star Wars has ignored it.

Thoughts?

* Forgetting they even owned Droids... but I'll put that down to GL's bad writing in the PT, rather than old Ben being a douche ;-)

^ Sad when Indie Cinemas go isn't it.

This is the palace-of-dreams where I was first transported to a galaxy far, far away...

...I went to the last night when they played 'It's A Wonderful Life'... "Hello Moviehouse!" *sob sniff*.  Still remember how the satin upholstered armrests felt as I gripped them with excitement when the Star Wars logo exploded out of the screen.

Think you answered it yourself ;-)...

"I always assumed that he must have gotten blasted by a storm trooper or something"

In answer to...

"Why would the storm trooper blast 3PO and just leave his bits lying around?  Wouldn't that raise suspicions?"

He doesn't, they throw Threepio into the trash where nobody should find him.

A more pertinent question would be: How did Chewie possibly find Threepio in the trash, in a vast place like Bespin???

What single (Non-SW) movie from the last 30 odd years has come closest to the spirit of Star Wars?... and why?
Time

Forgot about this 1986 gem:

            ^ Obi-Wan                     ^ Luke

Rural boy finds he has a mystical power and a destiny to face down the dark lord. Grey haired old Nomad finds him and teaches him how to wield a saber and how to feel the energy of all living things. Eventually his mentor is struck down by the dark lord. Shame the sequel got a little TOO star wars for my liking.

                                  ^ Vader

Also all the sequels/prequels and spinoffs were a pile of crap in comparison which makes it extra SW! ;-)

Yes I was looking at that the other day. Awesome build and so many other McQuarrie concepts to try ;-)

Have you considered recreating this shot with your model when it is done...

... either by building the hanger or compositing a photo in?

Curious possible casting choice.

The source is The Sun. Probably some writer had one too many at lunchtime and had a bit of space to fill.

Yes I think the important words to note in the article are...

"considered"

"could"

"reports"

"insider"

"think"

"expect"

Pinch of salt I fear. Although it could work...

I used to build SW kits all the time. AMT/ERTL ships and 1:6 scale vinyl figures. Wish I had some photos of them. I’ll have to take some next time I visit my parents and can dig them out.

I (Like the rest of you) was pretty excited to see the recent photos of what Adywan is up to with his Hoth hanger model. So I thought, I bet some of you must have pictures of projects you’ve done that look equally impressive.

Don’t be shy. This is the place to post them and then brag about your amazing scratchbuilt blaster, modified 1:4 scale Boba Fett or Jabba’s Palace diorama!

PLEASE POST PICTURES (Not just links)

Here is a few random ones from around the interweb…

^ I started something like this but never finished

^ Who hasn’t built this badboy

^ Almost exactly like a 1:6 BattleDroid I modified with custom blaster

Does knowing about the "unknown regions" make them known unknown regions? Or does the knowing about the unknown region negate the unknown factor making them known again? Or is there a complete knowingness of the unknown regions that makes it possible for the unknown regions to remain unknown? Or does simply making them "unknown" regions make them regions of indescribable thought? Or does "making them" unknown regions imply a level of "knowing" about the region in question? So does that in effect negate the "unknown" factor? Or does making a conscious thought to make them "unknown" essentially mean that you're making the decision to block yourself from that information? But then just knowing that the region is there in the first place kind of makes it so that you know about the unknown regions. So does that negate the title? Or does the simple desire to know more about the unknown regions give weight to the "unknown" title?

Also has an image space ship reference from Mobius in the Droids cartoon.

I was reading that Lucas (With permission) almost 100% copied the probe droid design for ESB from a droid Jean Giraud Moebius drew for his 1976 comic 'The Long Tomorrow'. His work isn't that easy or cheap to come buy, I've got some books like 'The Incal' but not that one.

Does any body have it or a link to a scan of the relevant robot. I would love to see how it compares (btw the image below ain't it).

Some other Moebius art like or about SW...

I just watched SW on VHS, it moves along much faster than I remembered.

Carrie Fisher had some lousy lines...

Did it have PAL speedup? lol

I always wonder if movies I own on Blu-Ray now, are 4% more boring than when I watched them as a kid?

ANH for example is about 10 minutes longer now than when I used to watch it! :-(

^ If you're mentioning The Princess Bride I better break these out then...

btw the late great Bob Anderson did swordfights in the OT and The Princess Bride:

Lucas didn't use him on the PT so Peter Jackson snapped him up to be sword master in LOTR. Which is why the fights in LOTR rule and the duels in the PT suck balls.
