General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

If it makes you feel any better, tv coverage of the Olympics have been using the camera techniques she pioneered in Berlin 1936 for decades now.

Yes any Olympic coverage or US election campaigning is textbook Riefenstahl. This a very interesting 3hr documentary about her:

Objectively, one of the 2 or 3 most talented film directors of all time. But she allowed that talent to be used for evil. Using her camera to make a pathetic little man look like a conquering emperor.

ESB had a supporting short film called Black Angel which was practically identical in tone to Excalibur

Didnt that get rediscovered recently? Any word on it getting released?

Screenshot in this article looks interesting...

Watch the link on Post 108!

I did watch it.

What I meant was, I had no memory of seeing back in the day. I guess I must have seen it briefly, to want the toys.

also..

^ Did you collect them all?

They practically just rotoscoped over some footage from ANH in this clip (Click the image below to play video):

The new Battlestar Galactica had me hooked, at least the characters had a bit of depth to them unlike the Prequels

New BG was the best thing since B5 but I can't see the SW connection, it was way too dark for that. The original on the other hand was perhaps the ultimate Star Wars clone. The costumes, the characters and especially the ship model work.

I'm sure Ralph McQuarrie had nothing to do with the similarities...

I maybe wrong, but wasnt the Hobbit more a children's story than LOTR? LOTR dealt with more 'adult' issues such as power, corruption and greed albeit in a fantasy setting. Star Wars was unique because you loved it as a kid in a very one dimensional kind of way, and grew to understand the deeper tones of it as you got older. I don't know many (if any) 5-10 year olds that fell in love with LOTR the first time they saw it.

The parents of my godchildren were read the books when they were kids and passed this on to their children.

So when they saw it they already knew the characters and the story and were miffed about some of the changes just like the adults.

As a boy I used to love Biblical epics and historical dramas and they are pretty much more weird and unworldly than anything in LOTR.

My dad read the Hobbit to me and my brother, with voices and everything! Don't think he ever read the LOTR though, I read that myself when I was a bit older. I listened to a home recorded reel-to-reel of the BBC radio LOTR/Hobbit first (That's way waaaay before the internet lol).

Another film with bags of Star Wars-esque action is... 1987's "Masters Of The Universe"....

Not even a hint of irony. This is a great, great film. The costume designs, sets and props are 1st class for one thing:

Plus Chelsea Field is way hot in her kickass Teela costume...

^ Impressive dancing skills but it's like a guide to why the Lightsaber duels in the original cuts of the PT suck. Twirling Sabers round like a frickin' marching band troop for no reason.

One of the better Duels in the PT (Not perfect but better) is Mace vs Palpatine because Ian McDiarmid was too old to do all that silly fluff the choreographer had planned. So on set, they were forced to scale it back from what was originally rehearsed. I got the impression Sam Jackson was disapointed but it worked in his favour as the result was a tighter, more memorable Duel with some closeups of actual acting!.

Saoirse Ronan is a great actress, she could be one of the Skywalker/Solo/Organa kids. She kicked ass in 2011's 'Hanna'.

I made a mock-up of how it might look...

                                                                                         ^ EU's Jaina Solo?

I went to a screening of 'Inner Space' last year. The audience went nuts, Star Wars style nuts... I'd forgotten quite HOW how much fun the film was! The film's overall tone is alot goofier than SW but it's got the same sense of adventure and romance. It's got that 3-way romantic frisson like in ANH and in an echo of the OT, Quaid and Ryan end up together while Short discovers his true self.

Dennis Quaid would've made a great Han Solo if Harrison had been unavailable. The goodies are really great and the baddies are really bad, simple stuff really. Another Amblin Entertainment film, good god that studio was on fire in the '80s. The FX still look great too.

            ^ Luke ^ Han ^ Leia

                           ^ "It's not my fault!"

^ The ship was pretty neat too

Return of the Jedi: Radical Re-Edit (Released)

I assume the shuttle is a fair distance from the village so it must have been a bit of a jog.

I don't think you need Vader to prompt Luke to surrender.

Another thing that always bugged me about ROTJ was how Ben's ghost interacted with the environment.

Love the graphical button, how do you do that?

I think it works really nicely when Luke leaves but less well when he comes back. Couldn't think of a good way to explain why he is suddenly back from the shuttle to the Ewok hut - I put in an iris transition to imply the passage of time. I think inserting a cut away here would help. Like cutting to Vader and/or Palpatine then back again. Maybe cut to Vader's shuttle arriving?

I wanted to get Vader in there early so Luke's flash of anger and "Why didn't you tell me?" line when he sees Ben is re-enforced. It felt mildly odd in the original Dagobah scene but feels even more random here. You understand why he says it but not why it is the first thing. If Vader had just spoken it would explain it nicely.

Would be great if it could be shown that Leia has sensed Luke's return. But there aren't any shots long enough of Carrie from the hut scene looking thoughtful that I possibly could dub an ethereal "Leia" over.

Anybody dig the new Ben intro I made? I thought it was pretty subtle so you might of missed it.

"Graphical button"?

Return of the Jedi: Radical Re-Edit (Released)

It's done. Some of the music probably needs rebuilding if you're gonna use it. R2 was beeping all over bits of it, limiting the bits of the soundtrack that I could use.

FYI: I uploaded the whole nightime on Endor sequence but only the first 5 mins are re-edited.

Click below to watch...

I'm thinking about a second more 'Radical' (In this spirit of this thread) version. Goes like this:

- Vader calls for his shuttle

- Threepio tells story and Luke leaves

- Vader's shuttle lands on endor

- Vader calls to Luke using the force across the forest night

- Luke hears then talks to Ben

- Luke talks to Leia then leaves

- Luke surrenders to Vader

Honestly I would hate it... I hope it has a lot of unknown undiscovered talent

Your probably gonna be pleased then, JJ seems to like to break new talent. If you listen to the commentary for 2009's 'Star Trek' he doesn't even remember the name of the unknown actor who played Kirk's father.

Now, four years later, that 'unknown' actor is starring in his 2nd Thor blockbuster!

Gotta be a part for Karl Urban. The dude is a one man SF&F acting school. He nailed Bones in ST, he nailed Eomer in LOTR, he's starring in awesome looking new SF Copshow 'Almost Human' and of course he IS JUDGE DREDD!

JJ needs to get him the lead role just so he can have some kind super SF franchise full house. Plus the higher his star rises the more chance of Dredd 2! He's so badass that he even has a comic book alter-ego called 'Urb Karlan' who is an actor in SF&F films from the future!
