I'm gonna go against the grain here and say the overall stories of the prequels weren't that bad. Lucas's general ideas were good as first drafts, but he just needed some "no men" to come in and fine-tune things.

I just don't see how is making the main character one of the most annoying and repulsive characters in film history a good idea. No matter what you build on that idea, it won't make it good.

Yes but it's the fine detail of the dialogue that makes him annoying, not the concept. There is nothing inherently annoying about Anakin racing pods. It's just he should have been a dashing young (Late teen?) Ayrton Senna type podracer, instead of a 9 year old doofus.

It is not the Ep1 Anakin I was particularly targeting with my argument. I was mainly talking about him in Ep2 and Ep3 where he constantly complains, he is ungrateful, he is a hypocrite (says "You're the closest thing I have to a father" to Obi-Wan's face and then a few moments later he talks shit about him behind his back) and he whines all the time (I mean he even whines in love scenes which is just unbelievable). If these kind of scenes are written, there are no dialogue corrections that will make them good.

Again those ^ are detailed dialogue issues, not concept problems. I and other editors have fixed all the issues that you highlight^. In fact your paragraph could be quoted to descibe how I've remade Anakin in my edits! lol. e.g. the 2 times that Anakin says...

"You're the closest thing I have to a father"

...have been removed from my cut. Also the romantic scenes have been drastically recut or removed entirely to make Anakin and Padme's relationship fluid and believable.

Again if battledroids were treated like a real threat by the rest of the characters, then they would be. Stormtroopers never pose any actual threat in the OT but because we see Han, Leia and Luke running, ducking and desperately trying to escape from them they come off as really dangerous.

Again if you watch how Hamill defects blaster shots on Jabba's skiff it looks like he's really in danger because he conveys that through his performance. But in the OT the Jedi just look half-bored deflecting the Droids blasts, like they are swatting away flies.  Throw in a couple of shots of Kenobi looking sh*t scared of the Battledroids and you've got something very different.

Broadly speaking... it's the execution, not the concept that is at fault.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

Carrie was on the Daytime Emmys recently, and she looks good! The rest of the gang are in good shape for their age as well. If Christopher Lee could do a SW film in his early 80's, I don't see any problems.

It's the surgery that kills the idea for me with CF. If you've had surgery you shouldn't be on the big screen, unless you're playing somebody who has had surgery. Like Mickey Rourke who has taken roles as physically deformed characters anyway, like Marv or the Wrestler lol

^ Venessa Redgrave still looks beautiful at 76 (It appears with no surgery)

^ Hlen Mirren 67, ditto

Carrie is only 56 and looks older than both of them. And it's not because of drugs and alcohol. I'm sure Mirren has done a whole Cuban harvest load of drugs in her past.

^ Priscilla Presley at 68 could make children cry.

The R2-D2 scene on cloud city really perplexed me after ryan pointed it out....

I had a proper look at it tonight and it's not pretty... But actually no shots need flipping at all but to fix it so that it makes sense here is what I come up with...

Yep I am terrible at art but you could treat it as if R2 moves while Lando is tugging leia so this happens off screen... But in my mind to show R2 already there or moving in that shot would help fix it but that is perhaps where it gets ugly or difficult to do.

Although the way I presented it is funny it is a serious idea for a fix... My art is appalling have a laugh I don't mind I accepted it a long time ago.

But the trajectory of R2 should be coming more inside the door again as Leia shoots and runs.

^ Fair play to ya, in all seriousness that looks as good if not better than SE changes like digi-Jabba.

^ If R2 started rolling inside the doorway this would fix it but bloody hell it would be a hard FX to pull off.

I, for one, will never own any version of 'that' trilogy so long as I draw breath. They're an absolute train wreck. No amount of editing can redeem it. None. ;)

Interested to know. What is the single worst thing (Or things) for you about the PT?

Well, off the top of my head ill give you three Ryan.

1. Lucas's whole idea and vision of Vaders and Obi Wans backstory

2. The shameless shoehorning of OT characters (3PO, R2, Chewy)

3. The dreadful continuity between it and the OT.

1. Absolutly. Obi-Wan should have started Ep.1 as cocky young Jedi adventuring round the galaxy and he bumps into slightly younger Podracing kid. Much bro-mance and high-adventure ensues

2. Chewie didn't need to be there. But if you watch the films in crono order as GL intended it doesn't feel like R2 and threeps are shoehorned in. Bit odd that Anakin created 3po but thats a different issue. A kid now who watches them for the first time isn't gonna know who the droids are anyway.

3. Yes continuity is ridiculous. GL must have been doing it on purpose. There is no reason in the world why Bail shouldn't have been a King instead of a senator.

For me it's the seperation of Anakin and Obi-Wan across the 3 films that is the unfixable part. No amount of fan editing can fix the fact that in the first two films they probably spend about 15-20 mins together. It felt obvious to me that the extended buddy action at the start of ROTS was to try and undo this damage.

If I could change one thing, it would be having the Neimodeans shoot Qui-Gon Gin in the back of the head during the first 5 minutes of TPM. Every other problem in the PT can be traced back to his presence.

I know you said you would be colour correcting AOTC last, but I'm sure we'd all love a sneak peek of the kind of thing you're planning aalenfae. Colour wise this is the worst frame from AOTC that I can think of...

^ Maybe you can post the same single frame corrected the way you envision it.

I doubt it's possible to digitaly correct Ewan's pickup stick-on beard and mullet wig lol

...being a Star Wars fan is the act of waiting for technology to finally get to the point where the PT can be unwatched.

Somewhat ironic that this will eventually happen using the same digital technology that Lucas pioneered to erase the OT.

Might take Adywan and a few more years for home editing/FX tech to advance but we will get a point where nobody will need (Or want) to ever watch the theatrical PT anymore.

I'm already there, now I've completed my own edits to my satisfaction of the PT.  I can't forsee ever taking the three PT Blu-Rays out of my Saga Boxset ever again.

Think the Anakin jump removal is almost frame-for-frame what I did in my cut... great minds think alike old chap :-D

You're on the right track with how to remove Yoda but I think in order for it to fully work you need to:

A: Give Dooku a reason to leave and not to just kill them (The original reason is he can't defeat Yoda)

B: Change Dooku's emotional reaction at the end (The original has him giving a blank stare, which is fine for a mid-sequence shot... not for the climax)

If you could show Dooku leaving as a result of Padme and the Troopers arrival that would give Dooku a natural reason to flee (You partially implied it I know) and as an added bonus it would mean Padme saved the day. You could have Padme arrive, then cut to her running inside (You'd have to erase Yoda from that shot) and add the troopers firing and shouting etc, then cut to the shot of Dooku running up the ramp, then we see his ship blasting out of there.

Could you change the Dooku's reaction from the sigh to a more gloating feel, a smile would do.

Or recut it so Dooku could start to pull the ceiling down onto Ani and Obi and Padme gets there in the nick of time and he has to flee.

Or recut it so he stats to pull the ceiling down onto Anikin and Obi, when suddenly Yoda appears saying "Dooku!" and they have the force battle of strength before Dooku brings that column down and runs why Yoda is busy.

This could work nicely as it would mean Yoda was arriving at the last possible second to save our heroes from Dooku killing them.

Steve does try to make him as real as possible. When Alan's 'auto-biography' came out (One of the greatest pieces of sustained comedy writing ever created btw) Steve toured bookshops all over doing signings, giving interviews and reading extracts all in character. Coogan is the Daniel Day-Lewis of comedy actors.
