Idea: my first steps into a larger world

Thanks Akratus, Ryan, Darth Solo & emanswfan for your comments and suggestions.

My edits are currently on hold at the moment due to work and family commitments. I hope to get back to the edits soon. Your feedback has given that added motivation.

Akratus: That's a great idea. I did toy with idea of using Coruscant in the opening scene after the title crawl. However i couldn't find a suitable clip to use for the pan down shot.

Ryan: I'll give your idea for the ROTS opening scene a try. As for TPM, we seem to have a quite similar approach to many issues in the film. I'll be adding subtitles for the alien characters, though I don't know how to do dubbing yet. Jar Jar will be a senator in my edit (i'll be adding his AOTC senate scene towards the end of TPM). Anakin also turns into a hero in my edit. The final battle and Obi-Wan vs Maul scenes are also redone but the latter will need some rotoscoping to change the color of the lightsaber.

Wow putting Jar-Jar's senate scenes in TPM is an awesome idea, wish I'd thought of that. Extra gravitas for the character as you can add subtitles of him arguing the case for Naboo. Like I said, thinking outside the box!

Jar-Jar is a Prince in my cut (Son of Lord Nass).

Rotoscoping Kenobi's sabre from green to blue in the Maul fight took me ages... good luck with that :-)

Childhood Misconceptions (aka The Trap Thread, but misconceptions still welcome)

Interesting thread, hadn't spotted it before. One straight off the top of my head was Bigg's line...

"Cover me Porkins"

I've spent the first 30 or so years of my life thinking it was...

"Cover me Falcons"

... I thought "Falcon" was a slang term for ships in SW, like the MILLENIUM Falcon. I only realised that it was Porkins about a month ago.

Some great ideas fairuz! Definately some thinking outside the box on your part. I like how in the early clip you cut the introduction down to just Obi and Qui-Gon. Also interesting to see the idea of cutting into the cockpit earlier in the ROTS opening. However I'd suggest doing the cut when the camera zooms in close to Kenobi's fighter at 00.40. This would feel more natural and preseve the elegant sweep of the original 'waterfall' opening shot.

I have re-dubbed all the Gungans (With new subs), turned Anakin into a hero, restored deleted scenes, re-arranged the final battle and drastically recut Kenobi's duel with Maul, in my edit(Among other things). So I can testify that they'll also work for you too as you suggest.

In my experience video edits are easy in comparison to audio edits. You can be quite bold with the visuals but if you can't back it up with the audio you've got a problem. I've been in plenty of situations where I wanted to cut something a certain way but couldn't because the audio was unfixable*. So to save yourself time and energy I'd be mixing the audio as you go.

* e.g. Jar-Jar juggling in Watto's shop. You've just faded it down. I gaurantee unless you totally recreate the soundtrack including hiring a Liam Neeson impersonator, you won't be able to sort that like you want to... I tried, oh boy did I try :-)

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

Hey, it's me. said:

Where was the surprise with the prequels? What twists and turns were in it? Where was the anticipation of not knowing where the story was going next? The intention of telling a good (albeit, ultimately known story) was hmm, say, maybe 30% of the reason behind making the films. Everything was half arsed. Apart from the design of it. Gotta make the toys look good.

What?!?!?!?! Where was the surprise with the prequels?...

The suspenseful un-answered questions, that's where. Like...

Why did the Jedi design a fighter that required an Astro-Droid but was so low to the ground that the Astro-Droid couldn't get out (Except by using it's rocket boosters)?

Why is Anakin alowed to dress in cool looking black-leather while all the other Jedi have to dress like Monks?

How did Padme get through the first 20 years of her life without seeing a waterfall?

Why are Jedi impervious to heat?

Just who was Master Syfo Dyas anyway?

How come the Naboo starfighter was designed with no landing gear?

What is Jawa juice?

Why does Count Dooku keep his ship on the other side of the planet to his base of operations?

Why is the high ground so damned important?

And of course, how do you stop your own heart when your husband has just become a sith?

^ It's these kind of enternal mysteries that keep me coming back to this endlessly fascinating trilogy! ;-)

Oh god let's not start with a funeral. Would put the whole thing on a downer.

JJ will probably open with a ship flying overhead wreathed in flame under attack by unknown forces. With the Captain shouting "We've got to warn the Republic BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!". Ship explodes, ominous hint of the imperial march.

Then we cut to a nice sunny day on Coruscant with all our old heros having a family get together (Luke is absent).  The new kids get introduced.

5 minutes later half of Coruscant is laid waste and Han has died defending his family.  With her last dying breath Leia tells the kids to find Uncle Luke (He's off exploring the Force somewhere). The kids still wiping away their tears run for the hanger bay and board the Falcon just in time to make a daring escape. Blasting into hyperspace and off on an adventure in a galaxy far, far, away.

That's how you start a JJ movie!

Killing off our heros in a blaze of glory would be the true way to treat them with respect IMO. Milking them or using them in meaningless cameos would tarnish the OT for me.

Not meaning to lead the current discussion off on a tangent, but seeing all those sparks reminded me of another scene and I just wanted to quickly ask if anyone else thinks this is a good idea:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OF-mZxhprVQ

I think whoever created that had the right idea of adding some sparks there.

make the lightsaber not sound like a bat hitting a metal grating.

Sorry but,

"like a bat hitting a metal grating" = what a lightsaber sounds like.

The above clip ruins Burtt's beautiful sound design. Also for that matter...

"hitting a radio tower mooring cable with a spanner" = what a lightsaber sounds like.

"driving a heated piece of metal into a block of ice" = what a lightsaber sounds like.

We all know that stand-alone Star Wars movies are a done deal (Like it or not) so what do you want to see???
Time

Here's another spinoff idea inspired by this image...

titled...             THE DARK LORD: RISE OF AN EMPIRE

I'd love to see a whole film following Vader taking place directly after ROTS. He'd be channeling his still burning feelings of loss into a merciless quest for vengeance on the galaxy.  Obi-Wan said Vader "Helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights" but we never got to see that, some destroying but not much hunting.

He could be scouring the four corners of the galaxy hunting down the last remnants of the Jedi order. There could also be a parallel story following the seeds of the rebellion including young Mon Mothma and we finally get a proper look at Alderaan and what Bail did before ANH. This would make the later destruction of a planet we'd come to know, by Tarkin even more powerful. There would also be room for a certain young Mr Fett who would be in his late teens by this point and also on a hate fueled vendetta against the Jedi. You could get a whole trilogy out of this infact if you went down the route of a big time gap between films. We could see young Leia growup to become the strong leader of the rebellion accross movies 2 and 3 ending with her daring assault on an Imperial compound just escaping with the plans of the Death Star, pursued once more by THE DARK LORD!

^ We never got to see enough of Genevieve O'Reilly's performance as young Mon Mothma. The actress clearly spent alot of time getting the voice exactly right. Time that dedication paid off.

^This is actually an older Daniel Logan in the real armour!!! He looks frickin' badass!

"KANEDAAAAAAHH"

"TENSUOOOOOOH"

Reading the latest plans for the live action Akira again. Please no, for the love of god no. You can't move it to America and use an all white cast wtf! It has to be Neo-Tokyo with new Japanese acting talent or don't even bother making it.

^ Ha! It really is right up my alley. The Smiths are in my top 5 favorite bands, Meat Is Murder is my favorite Smiths album (despite the title track being one of the only Smiths songs I don't like) and that rebel troop is one of my favorite "extras" from Star Wars. As a kid I actually used to pretend I was him more than Han or Luke! Truth!

Just the inclusion of the comic couplet "Each household appliance is like a new science, in my town" is enough reason to love that album. I can never decide which Smiths LP is the best. The first one is lyrically the strongest but the production is arse. Probably Queen is dead by a whisker, but then again Strangeways has 'Girlfriend in a Coma' arrrgghh can' decide lol

Found many more gems...
