SDCC news - OUT "quite likely" on Blu-ray
Time

I'd have rather they'd used a better puppet in the PT (With subtle CGI enhancements) but the full CGI Yoda was the next best thing. I'm just responding to comments that seem to be putting it on a par with Boss Nass for unbelievability.

I was dreading CGI Yoda going into the theatre, but when we all saw the first shot of him (This one of him giving Palpatine a silent quizzical look)...

... I remember thinking, wow that's Yoda, that's really Yoda! welcome back old friend. Of course the movie went downhill from there with Yoda's duel with Dooku being the low point.

It is true that if he had been a puppet, perhaps they couldn't have done that ridiculous duel but inability to perform stunts never stopped Lucas from having pensioners like Ian McDiarmid and Christopher Lee backflipping all over the screen.

I'm guessing the main problem with the TPM Puppet was that Lucas told the sculpters to make him 30 years younger. Forgetting that 30 is actually 3 in Yoda years, so they could've used the exact same puppet from ESB.

Star Wars Sequel Trilogy - Imaginary Concept Art Thread (Post art you want to see up on screen)
Time

Since there's been some chat about what kind of ships the Rebellion may or may not have in the sequels I though I'd start off a thread to see where everybodies thoughts are.

Some want the ships from the OT exactly as is (X-Wings, Ties, Stardestroyers etc) and some want something radicaly different. Others like me want something in between.

Here's a few designs I found that I think would look great in the new movies. They're different enough but still capture the feel of the universe of the OT...

I'm gonna say something controversial but the CGI Yoda is just as good as the puppet from ESB... perhaps better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KH1GOFUCHk

Unlike with almost every other CGI element of the PT the animators slaved over Yoda as can be seen in the production videos. They were working on it for along time before they even showed/told Lucas because they were so scared of screwing it up. They did research frame by frame into how Frank Oz's hand moved inside the head to mimic it exactly with the CGI muscles. They wanted it to look like the puppet but with subtle facial movements not possible with a physical puppet. They even copied the exact way puppet Yoda's rubber ears woblled when he moved. I believe Adywan is approaching ESB:R Yoda from a similar perspective with very subtle CGI ehancements (Like he did in the Cantina).

I would consider CGI Yoda to be the second best performance in the PT, just behind Ian McDiarmid.

Yoda's leaping around at the end of AOTC is another matter. Again as can be seen in the production videos the animators had prepared a subtle and convincing way for Yoda to move but Lucas took one look and said no he should spring around like a Frog, as can be seen in this video...

Does anybody actually care about getting untouched versions of the PT?

Not being sarcastic, genuinely interested.

Personally I'd be quite happy for all prints of TPM puppet yoda being burned and erased from existence. I care much more about getting ALL the PT deletedmaterial released in HD. Alternate line deliveries, deleted scenes and crucially the half of each movie before it was reshot/f*cked up at the pickup stage. Then faneditors can use it to make even better cuts.

Plus as far as I know all changes have been to add little bits here and there (Taxi, Podrace etc) so at least the material is out there in HD. Unlike the OT where it doesn't exist. Feel free to correct me on this if I'm mistaken.

I don't wanna see new republic Star Destroyers. They're too associated with evil to suddenly be good. Imagine a shot of Luke standing on the bridge of one, he'd look like a Sith lord simply by association.

It's not without precedent.

That was a one off ship taken in a hostile boarding action.

e.g. There's a difference between sneaking onto Endor aboard the captured shuttle Tydirium in a covert operation and the New Republic flying around everywhere in evil looking Imperial shuttles.

Episode IV: A Ridiculous Hope

As I tried to post before but in the wrong thread...

Possible lines:

Obi Wan: "I haven't gone by the name Obi Wan since I betrayed and murdered your father."

Luke: "You know him?"

Obi Wan: "Well of course I know him!"

^ Great idea! I've made a few tweaks based on the Obi-Wan/third-person gag...

BEN: Obi-Wan Kenobi...Obi-Wan? Now thats a name Obi-Wan hasn't heard in a
long time...a long time.

LUKE: I think my uncle knew Obi-Wan. He said Obi-Wan was dead.

BEN: Oh, Obi-Wan's not dead, not...not yet.

LUKE: You knew Obi-Wan!

BEN: Well of course Obi-Wan knew Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan's Obi-Wan! Obi-Wan hasn't gone by
the name Obi-Wan since Obi-Wan betrayed and murdered your father.

LUKE: Then the droid does belong to Obi-Wan.

BEN: Obi-Wan doesn't seem to remember ever owning R4. Very interesting...

BEN: Obi-Wan thinks we'd better get indoors. The Mushrooms are easily startled
but they will soon be back and in greater numbers.

^ That'll be 17 Obi-Wans in as many seconds lol

they obviously were based on the real Destroyers used in WWI and II, but instead of the sea they are used among the stars, hence Stardestroyer.

I can't remember them being called "sea destroyers" though ;)

We don't have sea-ships either, but we still get space-ships. Although we do have sea-ports AND space-ports... hang we do get air-hips though... I've confused myself lol.

I hope that the next trilogy open with the same craft like the OT, it would be cool to open Ep 7 with a Star Destroyer.....only to reveal it painted with Republic livery, perhaps policing.

Yeah, but I could imagine it in a more ironic way. Like open the movie with a Star destroyer coming from behind the camera like SW 77', only to see that it is completly destroyed, cut in half and that it is an old ruin from an old battle. Plenty of wrecks everywhere. And zoom in to a little ship in the middle of them.

Interior ship:

New republic officer: What are we looking for Sir? There's nothing here for decades.

Luke Skywalker: I don't know... I felt something.

YES YES YES YES! JJ are you listening? Open your movie like this! ^

I'm thinking what the McGuffin aboard the Stardestroyer is now.

Makes you wonder, why the Death Star wasn't called Star Destroyer, and the Star Destroyer wasn't called Death Triangle.

Because they obviously were based on the real Destroyers used in WWI and II, but instead of the sea they are used among the stars, hence Stardestroyer.

You just blew my mind. I never realised that is why they were called Star Destroyers like 'Imperial Destroyer'. Obvious when you realise it. I just grew up thinking the Empire had picked a threatening sounding name.

and when I said they destroyed stars I was joking. should've emoticonned that one I guess.

Digs at Lucas were funny. I could imagine everybody in the hall turning to the person in the next seat and saying "Am I dreaming this?!??"
