Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

I don't wanna see new republic Star Destroyers. They're too associated with evil to suddenly be good. Imagine a shot of Luke standing on the bridge of one, he'd look like a Sith lord simply by association.

I wanna see more of the Mon Calamari and Medical Frigate style cruisers we got a glimpse at in ROTJ.

These things look pretty cool... (I would lose the red though IMO)

Here is the video that the Doug Chiang quote is from...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gx7YSByPI8I

Interesting to note that even the fully finished, detailed and signed-off minature of the Naboo Starfighter in this video is to the correct scale and correct from a technical perspective (Plenty of Space for R2 etc).

I wonder did the set designers f*ck up the scale of the ships and/or the Naboo Hanger set meaning that they were stuck with the botched design when it came to rendering the CGI versions. Or was it a cost factor that they couldn't afford to build them to the correct scale as Doug had designed. The first scenario seems the most likely to me.

And the quote is hardly damning. He just imagined the X-Wings looking different in his personnal opinion. Also, he says that he was initially designing the ships for TPM to look like OT/McQuarrie ships but George told him not too.

I think the new Trilogy will be just fine in his hands.

Michael Kaplan did some great costumes for Star Trek (When he was just updating the classics) and then some not so good ones, like the skintight blue rubber body condoms from the opening scene in STID...

... still I wasn't complaining when Zoe Saldana wore the red version ;-)

But if we're gonna get costumes like this...

... then hell yes!

^ Good point.

Nabbo Starfighter Concept

^ As we can see the Astrodroid in Doug's original concept is much smaller in relation to the ship and Doug has also clearly designed in ample room for the shoulders and height. As conceptualised there are no technical issues, they are all down to how it was implemented by Lucas.

Where is this the full quote (In context) that keeps getting trotted out about young Doug wanting to redesign the X-Wings? Because it sounds to me exactly the sort of thing a young excited artistic kid would rush home and do after seeing Star Wars. I know I used to design and redesign SF stuff in my sketchbook for fun.

As I've said before, I love Doug Chiang's paintings as they have the style, the vibrance and the romance of McQuarrie's work. Glad he's on board for EpVII!

I've gotten really into this one and have finished off the edit already! (Rendering now). I'm working on a cover to almost exactly match the other 3 films in my old import Indy DVD Boxset (Replacing the bonus disc case). Finally I think I can allow this film to occupy the same physical space as the OT.

Here is the front cover...

Think that will fit nicely next to these...

Several interesting tidbits:

The last paragraph pretty much confirms this will be shot exactly as the OT and TPM were, complete with actual film. Like I said in previous posts, I just hope Abrams can do with Lucas on Ep7 what he did with Spielberg on Super 8.

In the comments, someone mentions they were at some event with Phil Tippett and he mentioned he was working on some super secret project that in all likelihood is Ep7.

There's also a particularly interesting story someone heard from "a friend at lucasfilm" that kinda takes the idea of George having limitless control and flips it on its head. Worth reading.

Thanks for that link Fang Zei!!

I almost did a little dance when I read...

"I’ve heard that Abrams is doing tests to try and recapture the exact grain of the film in the original trilogy, to make his movie aesthetically in line with those"

...if true, that is very encouraging that he's obsessing over stuff like that nevermind the big stuff. GO JJ!

However when I read the comments I nearly put my fist through the wall since they are all taking the piss out of the above statement and saying there's no difference between film and digital-video.... arrghhh!

Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull: Covenant Edition (Edit on mp4 and DVD) (Released)

I'm cutting the Jungle chase at the moment. Feel like I'm losing my mind trying to edit while keeping all the people in the right Jeeps with the right groups, in the right places and with the Skull in the right Jeep also. Phew!

I'm keeping Mutt's sword fight (controversialy) but cutting it much tighter with all the goofyness gone and most long shots trimmed. So we get the swashbuckling fun it should have been. It's Mutt's big hero moment so cutting it completely seems nuts IMO. Naturally, there isn't a single shot of him straddling the two jeeps.

I'm scratching my head as to how it's possible to remove his swinging from the vines though. I'm starting to suspect it might be impossible to remove. So hell I might keep it a very limited, tighter, de-monkeyified version. Because it's badass when he swings into Spalko's jeep and takes back the Skull.

If any other fans with a knowledge of the vines sequence can suggest a way to remove it without creating big continuity errors then post away...!

On that subject, can we maybe have the Boom Shakalaka chant from Muppet Treasure Island for when the Ewoks are gonna eat our heroes...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peJhJMciSXE

also Love Led Us Here would work nicely for a slow-motion cheesy montage during the Ewok Celebration montage just before the credits roll...

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

Glad to hear about the lawsuit filed against Sega/Gearbox for false advertising over their 'Colonial Marines' game. If you don't know the story...

..."it seems" to me at least that they fabricated amazing looking custom videos of the game to show at press events. These were labelled clearly as "gameplay demos" (They then embargoed all reviews of the game) but when people went to buy on the day of release, it was a different utterly sh*tty game. As detailed here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z2qVebxlUo

Hense the lawsuit. I was wondering if such a case could be filed against George Lucas for 'The Phantom Menace' Trailer. As it features; different and convincing vocal performance throughout not in the film / alternate and superior sound FX / multiple pieces of amazing music not in the film / omits Jake Lloyd's lackluster performance entirely / and grossly misrepresents Jar-Jar's character by only usinng one of his lines and probably his least annoying one at that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJZ846YkK78

^ Still want to see that movie

Tongue slightly in-cheek with this one. But still worth discussing. IMDB lists it as making £200 million on opening weekend so that's a big lawsuit ;-)

I think in terms of post-3D looking really bad it's getting alot better. However...

... I thought this office scene ^ in STID looked mental, with the characters appearing to exist on two different plains of reality. But mostly post-3D films are more subtle now. Most of the time you forget they are even in 3D ('til you get to a night scene and you can't see sh*t) making you wonder why you had to pay extra for it.

But a film actually shot in 3D like Dredd or Avatar can be absolutely stunning and is worth the money at the theatre.

I started on a KOTCS edit a while back and ended up boring myself with it at around the time the get to the Conquistador Tomb. I abandonned it and have started from scratch again. I’ve recently come to the conclusion that the big problem isn’t all the little irritations like CGI goffers it’s the huge 47 minute part of the film between escaping Roswell and the quick sand. This whole part is devoted almost entirely to explaining the massively convoluted plot. But I only just realised this because all the exposition is broken up by moving from place to place and having a diverting Motorcycle chase in the middle. The opening and closing of the film are fine pace wise (They have other problems obviously).

I’ve decided I’m going to cut from Indy escaping on the rocketsled straight to Mutt finding him on the train. This eliminates the whole CIA-think-Indy-is-a-communist/back-at-college-only-to-be-fired subplot. We never meet Jim Broadbent’s Brody clone but that’s no great loss. The implication will be Indy is catching a Train back from New Mexico… simple. Next I’ll be removing the Sanitorium scene and just have Indy and Mutt go straight to the Tombs. This will eliminate a good ten minutes for starters.

But I want to take out so much more bringing the 47 minutes down to something closer to 20-25. Problem is the plot is so confusing that I’m struggling to understand it. Obviously understanding it entirely is neccasary to know what can be cut. So, can anybody explain the what happens and what is described in the 47 minutes between Roswell and the quicksand?

Thanks for the help Lucas fans! and here is a little colour test I did to try make the film look less hideous…

btw Any other suggestions, questions or wishes for this edit are welcome.

Hell yes that would mean Chewie could say the whole "Mr Bimble is the man who lives in my finger" dialogue from Muppet Treasure Island.

And if you were going with the 'Christmas on Hoth' idea I suggested. You'd have lines from Muppet Christmas Carol to play with.

Plus use this dialogue verbatim lol...
