Fox News would love to run this news story...

As I've said I suspect Card knew what it meant on some level. However, I'll concede that he may just have been using it in the Harry Potter way you mention, like "Damn", "Bloomin'" or "Bloody". For example if he'd done a series of books about wars with Vampires, his characters might have dubbed "Those bloody Vampires!" as "Blooders".

But it's interesting when companies, producers, writers, directors etc are unaware of a word's other meanings...

and

and randomly some classic food names that didn't work in translation...

WHOA!!! And why have I never heard of that Sharpe TV series!!!! It looks really cool, and I love Sean Bean. I know what I am doing during my weekend this week!

Wow got Sharpe to watch fresh! You are in for a treat Sir. You can also play spot the actor, as everyone who is anybody was in that show. Sean must have bedded every young actress from the period in that show including Liz Hurely, Emily Mortimer and even The Borg Queen.

He even goes up against the current Bond in one of the films!

IMO it stretches credulity to imagine that Card, who seems to have been writing novels for a decade before 'Ender's game', would not have a grasp of the meaning of words. Afterall, if I was writing a Sci-Fi saga I'd agonise for weeks over what to call the antagonists.

The fact that in the last decade he has apparently ret-conned the "Buggers" to have a different name "Formics" which he used becasue it is derived from the Latin for Ants, suggests he has a deep understanding of the meaning and entymology of words.

if an actor is keeping his schedule open for a film they expect to be in, and they get replaced on a whim, they deserve some financial compensation.

The whole production gang behind LOTR seem like a lovely bunch of people. But then there is the story of how Stuart Townshend spent two months of intense training to play Aragorn. Presumably turning down work to do that training and then turning down a sh*t-ton of work to free up the time for the year-long shoot ahead...

...Then they fired him the day before filming began and refused to pay him anything. Of course they replaced him with Viggo Mortensen, one of the best casting decisions of the last two decades but it's stilll a sh*ty way to treat somebody.

btw Viggo would be amazing in EpisodeVII! As a grizzled Republic General "IT'S A TRAP!"

In British culture "Bugger" has almost no negative connotations anymore. It's a term of endearment if anything. The phrase...

"You daft bugger"

roughly equates to...

"You silly sausage"

(Wait, wait, bad example, maybe American's don't have that one either?) It roughly means...

"You ninny"

(Wait bad axample again!) It has the same meaning as...

"You silly sod"

(Errrm might not know that either?) Ah hah! I got how to explain it. It means the same as...

"You daft apeth"

Hope that's all much clearer now. My work here is done

I thought you were kidding about the buggers, CP3S. Maybe you are.

Jesus wept! I also thought it was a satirical joke from mr CP3S. But no, I just looked it up and the Alien's in Card's 'Ender's Game' are really called "Buggers".

I did feel really angry about the guy but after his recent article saying...

Obama wants to be like Hitler and reign over America forever by controlling the country using armed young black street gangs as his new fascist police force...

...I just thought this guy isn't merely wrong and deluded, he's actually insane and needs medical help. He's systematically destroying his own career by choice but I do feel a bit sorry for the people like Harrison in the film who are watching it all crumble around them before it even hits the boxoffice.

But anyway. I'm reading Hunter S. Thompson at the moment. His Hell's Angels reportage is stunning, gripping, beautifully written and more than a little scary. A great entry point if the crazy stream-of-consciousness from 'Fear and Loathing' puts you off his work.

Benedict Cumberbatch is now heavily tipped to be included in J.J.'s episode VII it seems.  But would his role be as a good 'un or a bad 'un, I wonder?

http://www.filmchronicles.com/benedict-cumberbatch-star-wars-vii/

Yes he is playing Lando.

oh he cant be lando not in this movie if he is in this movie he has to be either a sith lord or Boba Fetts son

Would be funny if there was a repeat of the 'Batman Forever' fiasco. JJ casts Tommy Lee Jones as Lando and Billy Dee William's succesfully sues Lucasfilm ;-)

Yes sad news about Frost. His interviews were all a bit cosy towards the end of his presenting career, which is when I was growing up. But then as I got into Python and the like in my teens, I found about his early-mid career prime as a firebrand satirist and interviewer...

David Frost and Willie Rushton SHRED the then Home Secretary, 1963

^ Suprised the then Government didn't have the BBC bombed for that sketch ;-)

I great man who helped change comedy and political attitudes forever.

Didn't mean to cast aspersions, I'm sorry*.

I was just trying to lightheartedly contrast how much of a non-story Simon's response was, with how certain others choose to handle fan criticism.

btw This small group of foolish ST fans merely voted STID as the worst to send a big FU in JJ's direction in the first place. Simon was just responding in kind.

(*You could've just told me to f*ck off?.. joking, joking, sorry)

The 1978 DOTD packs in more satire of western culture and the human condition into it's run time than all the films in the last decade put together. Reason enough to exist alone IMO.

However, I could see why somebody might find it overlong and slowpaced... although I'd disagree. The remake is much 'faster and more intense' but ultimately it lacks the thought, heart, soul and wit of the original.

Yes, but I haven't seen any STID stuff in the toy aisles. Most of the summer blockbusters are represented. Even that snail movie got a toy line.

ok, no toy, so what?   It doesn't change my point.  No Trek fans, no Trek movies.   No Trek movies,  Pegg doesn't get paid.

Just guessing here but...

You don't like Simon Pegg (and JJ) putting his heart into STID, then reacting angrily when some fans diss it way out of proportion and saying "F*ck you" in response.

...you prefer George Lucas' approach (Who didn't put his heart into the SE changes) of mocking and laughing at the fans who are irritated by the SE changes via his commentary tracks. Plus inserting a gag to annoy the fans into a scene from TPM.

Just so long as George doesn't use a naughty word in the heat of the moment, it's fine. Much better to bide his time, then come back years later and dub Vader going "Noooooooo" and digitally inserting Hayden into ROTJ to piss everyone off. It seems in the SW world, revenge on your fans is a dish best served cold.
