Has anybody seen Michael Bay's new film 'Pain and Gain'?

I was watching/listening to movie critic Mark Kermode destroying it in an epic rant. It seems to be the worst review he's given a film in the more than 10 years he's been doing his show (That includes 'Sex and the city 2'!). Highlights from his review include...

"Anybody with a beating heart and soul ought to be offended by the movie"

"A black gaping void like hole"

"Steeped in gross misogyny"

"It is not a movie for adults... indeed it is not a movie for sentient, living, breathing beings"

"Like swimming in a sewer"

Wow, almost tempted to see it just to witness how bad it is.

Not a typo lol. My Zero is based on...

this jacket,

Keifer's mullet,

and as above this sequence,

...oh and every other frame of the movie.

I grew up in the 80s and have fond memories of the music and films (SW, Raiders, Goonies etc etc). But this film makes me think I'm wrong and that the decade should be nuked from orbit... it's the only way to be sure ;-)

I grew up generally disliking the shorter European cut of The Shining and didn't even know about the original 25 minute longer US cut until I saw it at the cinema last year. All the problems I had with the film melted away when viewing it.

If memory serves, we see more Scat Man so he doesn't seem so random (Plus we give more of a sh*t when he dies), we see Danny has an imaginary friend and is far from 'normal', we learn early on that Jack is an alcoholic and has probably physically abused Danny and most importantly it has title cards explaining jumps in time.

A frequent criticism of the film is Nicholson's performance, which is justified by viewing the European cut as it appears random and incomprehensible. But when we see a big black title card saying "A month later" or "The next day", we can then juxtapose the before and after the card in our minds, to chart his mental decline.

btw the 2012 documentary 'Room 237' about all the obssesive Shining conspiracy theories, is really wonderful. It presents the theories and the people who put them forward without comment. So you can view them as geniuses or people who have lost all sense of perspective/reality and are just seeing patterns in the essentially random (I'm in the latter camp). e.g.

^ One theory has it that this was Kubrick 'deliberately' putting a sexually suggestive image in our minds and another is that the carpet was a reference to Kubrick having faked the moon landings...

If a bunch of clowns want to brand STID as the worst ST film ever (Which it just isn't by any measure, however you feel about it) then why not tell them to go f*ck themselves. Hardly the end of the world. People need a sense of humour sometimes.

Also Simon is a HUGE SW fan, always has been just like you and me. I hate what was done in the PT also but I'd still jump at the chance of being involved in some level (Not that anybody would ask me to do a voice lol). Nothing hypocritical about that.

Plus just for that hilarious scene from Spaced where Simon burns all his SW memorabilia after seeing TPM (Perfectly capturing the pain of a generation) means I'll forgive him almost anything ;-) *

(* Maybe not his performance as Scotty)

Here is the total list of movies I've watched since last Wednesday. Due to the sheer amount, I won't say what it is about them I like/dislike, I'll just give them my rating (rounded off to the nearest whole number).

Misery (1990) - 8/10

Batman Forever (1995) - 4/10

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) - 8/10

Adjusted the scores on a few of those ;-)

The Lost Boys (1987) - 0/10... just for the dayglo Saxophone scene alone

Rear Window (1954) - 10/10... an audacious masterpiece of suspense and filmmaking artistry

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) / Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) - a billion out of/10... films don't get no better than this

The Shining (1980) - 6/10... yes for the european cut but 9/10 for the longer US cut

Rest of the scores are more or less bang on. Impressive viewing, I went through a phase of watching a critically lauded old classic I hadn't seen everyday. Great way to discover things... and some overated tosh too lol

James Bond 007 Thread

I know its like month old news but is anyone surprised Sam Mendes pulled a JJ Abrams denying he was going to direct bond 24 and now is signed to direct it.

This guy is the new series regular really?

Count me as so not interested in the Next Bond unless some how Mendes and Logan actually make a 007 picture not a thriller of the week where you know what is going to happen before it happens because its painfully obvious and telegraphed.

Sigh this was news to me. Well that's another Bond movie down the toilet :-(

Episode VI: Return of the Ridiculousness

You should have all kinds of people appear as force ghosts.

How about ending the whole Ridiculousness Saga with an epic Ewok Celebration montage set to 'Do You Here The People Sing' from Les Mis. You could cut together footage from all 6 films and end with an angelic force ghost choir appearing one by one. This multilanguage version would be nice for Star Wars fans from around the world.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpDbvlAI_A0

If somebody made a large expanded matte for this shot for you...

...You could pan out very slowly as ghosts of everybody who has died appears bit by bit...

then

and

etc etc 'til it looks kinda like this...

I seem to have a gene missing that everyone else in the world has. That of finding it funny when other human beings look like they got really hurt (Like the bike falling on that girl ^). Slap stick humour is hilarious because it's done by using "A SLAP STICK", but watching somebody actually get hurt isn't funny at all... call me crazy.

The rollerblading video is awesome btw.

Dammmmn Bingowings! ^ That photo just turned me gay ;-)

Last comic read

Big Mark Millar fan since the days when he wrote for 2000AD. Kick-Ass comic was great but I was disapointed with the sequel. Too many characters introduced that don't go anywhere (Seems to be common critiscm of the film). Haven't gor round to redaing Hit-Girl spin off yet.

His best book is 'Red Son' IMO. What if Superman's pod had landed in a communist workers collective farm in Russia instead of America? Incredible stuff.

His two 'What if supervillians were real?' books 'Nemesis' and 'Wanted' are great. But not for the feint hearted or easily shocked, these villains are realistic remember.

'Superior' is fantastic. A wheelchair bound Kid with multiple sclerosis is given a wish by a monkey from space. He chooses to be a Superhero but all isn't as it seems.

Personnaly I'm turned off by all the hundreds of characters in the Marvel multiverse thing. But his 'Civil War' comic was actually really good despite featuring every superhero in the galaxy. Basically examines a post 911 world through the Marvel Prism.

I never batted an eye lid at Bennedict playing Khan. Beyond the name his ethnicity and cultural background had nothing to do with the Khan character really. BC was just a great actor to be a villain. As has been said above Montalban wasn't Sikh either. It's not like BC pulled an Alec Guinness and blacked up and put on a voice...

The original TV Khan is arguably more problematic as Montalban applied a thick layer of skin darking makeup...

...something they wisely dropped for the film Khan. But in this day and age there's no excuse for having Depp in The Lone Ranger doing a "We in heap big trouble kemosabe" voice. And no ammount of photo oportunities with Native American delegations is gonna change that...

STAR WARS: points of origin - fan documentary (* unfinished project *)

Not meaning to pooh-pooh your idea but...

http://fanedit.org/ifdb/component/content/article/79-fanedit-listings/fanfix/531-james-bond-007-never-say-mcclory-again

But if you still wanna do it, a good title might be...

"A Secret Service Honour: One Legendary Edit"

or

"Bond Assignment: Sean Takes A Return Duty"

or

"Sean's Home In Thunderball"

or simply

"A really secret edit"

But when I discovered you had to pay a fee to take the game to 100% completion, I was absolutely disgusted. Like turning the page to the last chapter of a book and finding a white page with the words "F*ck you pay me" typed in middle.

I just looked into this. There are just a couple areas that can't be fast traveled to that can be hard to find. DLC doesn't count at all toward the percentage toward completion.

I've got all the pickups, camps etc in the game 100% but it's getting the achievement trophys that give a game replayability and two of them are for buying uprades online. Needless to say I didn't buy them.

Another example would be the otherwise excellent 'Arkham City' that has parts of the actual game missing (Catwoman, Robin etc) if you've don't purchase them seperately online or buy the right exclusive version at the store. Not to mention day one maps, skins, weapons, challenges.

I love it when (Like with 'Fallout') expansions get released 6 months later to extended the game. No problem paying for that extra content. But increasingly games are finished, have 10% cut out of them then are released. Then you are expected to pay again to buy back that 10%.

The way to do it is like with 'Prometheus', where there was a bog standard edition with more less just the film and a deluxe one with all the content. I happily paid the extra for the deluxe release and spent hours enjoying it all.

What a bunch of assholes. I'm definitely NOT buying the Bluray unless they release a PROPER version of it.

Sadly I'm probably with you. Was looking forward to STID on BR but I can't support treating fans like this. Maybe I'll wait 'til it shows up second hand then my hands stay clean. Audio commentaries are a deal maker/breaker for me. I'll buy any Ridley Scott film (Even the ones I hate) if he's included a commentary (He usually does) because they are so good. Same for Coppola and Scorsese and JJ's commentary on ST2009 was great. Sad face.

Games are going the same way with the last one I played being the new 'Tomb Raider'. A superb game (One of the best ever infact) that never the less left a sour taste in my mouth. It came with zero unlockable bonus content (Like skins, weapons, maps etc) for achieving anything. All of which were available day-one to pay for.

But when I discovered you had to pay a fee to take the game to 100% completion, I was absolutely disgusted. Like turning the page to the last chapter of a book and finding a white page with the words "F*ck you pay me" typed in middle.
