Exactly.

A Han/Boba/Yoda origin story is a horrible idea, but we all knew this was coming when Disney said they were going to do spinoffs.

Well Han Solo is one of my favourite charectors from the movies but my all time fav is Dash Rendar mainly because I grew up with the n64 SOTE game so it would be cool if they made a standalone film about him just after the events in SOTE

Fear not! I already directed that movie in my brain...

ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!

By far the best reference we have are actually IMDb scores which are generalisation of large amount of opinions.

Looking at ROTJ score, it is at 75. place (within top 100 all-time). That pretty much tells you that people think it is a pretty damn great film. So if you say it is an average your opinion deviates considerably.

That IMDB Top 250 is surprisingly solid, a few things I'd take issue with here and there but generally a respectable list. A lot less crazy "WTF is that doing there?!?" entries than most movie lists. It says it is based on...

The formula for calculating the Top Rated 250 Titles gives a true Bayesian estimate:

 weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

where:

  • R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
  • v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
  • m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 250 (currently 25000)
  • C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 7.0)

for the Top 250, only votes from regular voters are considered.

But in the general user ratings ROTS is rated higher than ROTJ, which was one reason I started the thread. Interesting to note that using the above formula the PT doesn't even feature in the Top 250... which is as it should be.

Firstly 'Goldfinger' is just a random film in a series based on the 7th book and is not part of linked trilogy. There are worse bond films there are many that are better. ROTJ is better than it.

Secondly 'Quatermass and the Pit' was a remake of a BBC TV serial, not an orginal film but that's no reason to discount it. I've seen some of the Quatermass franchise but not that one, so I'll take your word for it being better than ROTJ.

Thirdly 'Day of the Dead' is inferior to both preceeding parts (Though still excellent). Nowhere close to ROTJ.

Fourthly 'Return of the King' is......    wait... you've got a point there. Damn fine film, first LOTR is better but ROTK is a massive improvement upon TTT. Still prefer ROTJ.

Fifthly 'Toy Story 3', that is a rare example of the 3rd film being the best by far yes. Still pants next to ROTJ.

Sixthly 'Last Crusade' is fun but not a patch on Raiders or Temple Of Doom. But it does actually rival ROTJ for shear entertainment, I'll give you that.

Whatever they go with will need to be vague-sounding just as the first installment of the PT and the retconned title of the '77 film were. It's episodes 8 and 9 when the title can actually give something about the plot away.

Episode VII: A Vague Threat

Episode VII: Something Elsewhere Elusive

Episode VII: The Fog of (Star) Wars

Episode VII: Return of the Franchise

Episode VII: Something, something, something... Darkside

Episode VII: A New Film

^ The last one says it all rather well IMO

My motto on ROTJ:

-When you compare it to most 3rd movies of a franchise its pretty damn good.

-When you compare it to Star Wars and Empire, and it is average at best.

My motto on ROTJ:

-When you compare it to all 3rd movies of any franchise its the best 3rd film ever made*.

-When you compare it to Star Wars and Empire, and it is average at the very least.

(* Seriously name me another 3rd film that can match it from any other franchise. Even when GF2 was thought to be the ultimate sequel, GF3 dropped a massive b*llock)

Whatever the fine detail of the argument in terms of time on screen. I think what is being said is that objectively speaking, a bunch of nomadic Santa's elves with fairy lights for eyes sqeaking "Utini!" might just be considered less imposing than a tribe of war-like man-eating voodoo bears ;-)

That being said, I don't have a problem with Ewoks, Jawas or Ugnaughts (Just Gungans), they are all fun little creatures that belong in the fun Star Wars universe.

and yes as has ben said many times the Ewoks do not defeat the Emperor's best troops, the Rebels best troops do that. The Ewoks merely get massacred causing a diversion.

What number of changes we on now doubleofive (without joking please) or rough guestimation on your last count?
Impossible to say. Thankfully I think Adywan will be doing the official Visual Comparison again, which is great as I won't have to try to figure out what changed frame-by-frame (which we had to do with the Special Edition VCs since ILM never replied to my emails). Scanning the list I'm sure there are a few things that aren't on there, but I can say that most of it is covered by the list.

If I had to guess a number, it might be this.

What's the largest number you can think of?

both wrong...

- Spock's-floppy-hair/time-jump-run removed
- Random pause to pointlessly watch Kirk close a hatch removed
- Death scene recut to be less emotional and therefore more emotional... if that makes any sense at all?!? :-D
- Uhura overacting shot removed
- "Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaan" shortened to merely "Khaaaaaaaaaan" ;-)
- All cutaways to medical removed and fight footage linked by new match cuts
- Uhura mention of magic-blood removed

Doctor Who

The definitive DR WHO serial for me will always be 1988's 'Remembrance of the Daleks'.

Loved all the allusions to the Doctor's dark history and the 'Hand Of Omega'...

the sinister British neo-nazis collaborating with the Daleks subplot...

all the references back to the shows past...

Ace kickin' some Dalek ass...

existential angst over tea with Jeffrey from the Fresh Prince...

and of course when this cliffhanger happened I nearly crapped myself*...

A quarter century ago, really...? bloody hell I feel old now ;-)

(* They need to bring back the multi-part serials. It's not the same without those cliffhangers IMO)

What is/was the best SW Game ever, on any platform?

But not a single mention of the Force Unleashed games?  Has everyone here given them a fair shake?

I played the demo for the first game and decided I would pass on it.  I had a friend pressure me into playing the full game, and I'm glad I did.  I found the game much more enjoyable than I would have thought- given the demo.

Same reaction here when I played a bit of it... meh, then turned it off. Didn't like the character animation or the general feel of how it played. Maybe I should give it another go if you say it gets better.

And for anyone wanting System Shock 2 (or named C3PX), be advised that Good Ol' Games (gog.com) has it for $2.50.  I have this version and it works just find on my 64bit Windows 7 machine.

GOG.com is amazing, it's how digital media should be sold. User friendly, DRM free and reasonably priced. I've bought shed loads of games off that site.

Plus the games usually come with free bonus guides, artwork, music etc etc.

If digital media had been offered like this from day one, then the current culture of not paying for anything would've never started IMO.

Ooooh they've got 'The Chaos Engine' now. I used to play this guy.... ;-)
