4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Fang Zei said:

There are far too many changes to make branching a viable option. They would need to give each version its own disc. Just yet another reason why they should actually do a complete restoration of the OOT.

Yeah, that’s why I said theatrical cut. At this point if they don’t go with a full restoration of the OOT but still want to release the “original” trilogy, I think they’d just fiddle with the OT footage so it’d fit in better with the SE footage, branch it, slap an “ORIGINAL THEATRICAL CUT” label on it, and call it a day.

Maybe they’d put out a bonus disc containing scenes and segments from the original versions that have been remastered, allowing an editor to recreate a mostly OOT. Maybe that would satiate those in the company who want to put it out and those who want to resist doing so for whatever reason, misplaced loyalty to GL or otherwise.

If they did that, they would have absolutely no reason NOT to use branching to view the theatrical cut. If anything, it’d kick up a mighty large shitstorm

I’ve said many times that I would love a three-disc-per-movie release with unaltered, '97, and the new 4k SE (wouldn’t really care if the '04 and '11 versions weren’t included).

They could probably fit all the SEs versions (97, 04, 11) of a single film on a single disc w/seamless branching. They could also probably rope in the unaltered version as well, but then you’d be playing with fire in terms of color accuracy. It worked with Blade Runner (I think disc 1 of the 5-disc set contained the theatrical, international cut, and 1st director’s cut. I think.)

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

Ok, stupid but genuine question, in the outdoor Tatooine shots in IV, for some reason the lower right panel on R2’s back is painted uniformly grey. Any point? Production goof? It seems intentional and I don’t think that body was re-purposed at any time to be another droid so what gives? It goes away for pretty much every indoor shot and Mos Eisley, so maybe my sleep-deprived brain is going crazy…

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Well, I just watched TFA for the first time in about a year, and honestly, after seeing the seething, endless vitriolic hatred this film gets in some other circles (hey it’s pretty much an echo chamber here on OT so at least I won’t get e-murdered by saying this)…I think it’s actually pretty decent.

It’s not perfect by any means, but it certainly isn’t as bad as many would try to spin it. I honestly wasn’t bothered by the retreading of ANH’s plot since this film was able to do it’s own thing, and can stand on it’s own. I mean, the film is structured, paced, and overall so radically different, you’d really have to heavily cut out major scenes and chunks out of the plot, then agonizingly stretch out others for it to even get close to resembling ANH. That aside, my only real major gripe is with pretty much everything surrounding Starkiller Base, but at the end of the day, it’s just a plot device, and it gets the job done. I don’t see people mercilessly attacking Jedi for doing practically the same thing.

Other than that, SFX were good, soundtrack was great, cinematography was beautiful, characters and performances were fantastic, and the fan service, while plentiful, wasn’t non-stop, shoved-into-your-skull-in-like-a-fucking-frying-pan like Disney’s marketing, which was (and still is) something I whole-heartedly abhor. But that’s a rant for another day.

'97 vs. '04 (and '11) - Your preference?
Time

From what I can tell, aside from inserted material, the '97SE were actually really decent restorations…at least compared to the demolition derby of the 2004 and subsequent '11 release.

I don’t think I’ve completely watched the '97s (though I’m hunting down a few VHS sets on Ebay right now), but I have seen the '04 and '11 releases many times. Overall I think I’d have to side with the '97SEs.

For ANH, the Greedo scene is awful, but blink and you’d miss it, so I just blink. I honestly think Jabba looks better in the '97SE as he actually blends into the environment well. As awful as that model was, it was colored and lit miles better than the '04 version. Rest of the CG was mostly harmless (Mos Eisley aside, good god) and the Death Star’s Praxis shockwave always makes me giggle.

For Empire, original Boba Fett voice +1, chimp emperor +1, but then there’s Luke’s scream which is…eh…

Jedi is like trying to pick between dog shit, horse shit, and buffalo shit. '97 still wins for Sebastian Shaw alone.

Are the Prequels Even Worth Watching Once?

But then you’d miss out on the second most important part of the prequels - their amazing visuals.

For a second I thought someone shopped Anakin and Obiwan into that bar with three-titted cat lady from Star Trek V…then I realized both the gif and my eyes are total shit.

In all honesty regarding the prequels, I think they deserve at least one watch as a lesson more than anything. They exist, they’re shit, and they kicked an absolutely massive dent in one of the biggest media empires out there. They are an el primo example of how to not make a movie.

Which version/release of the Star Wars movies do you watch and why?
Time

I - widescreen VHS since I lost the DVD somehow. Also Frink’s edit.
II - shitty pan & scan DVD. Also Frink’s edit, again.
III - normal DVD. I should probably pick up the prequel trilogy Bluray set some day, but I just don’t care enough. Oh, and Frink’s edit. Genuinely best way to watch these three.

IV - Despecialized 2.7 if I want it simple, Silver Screen if I feel like shooting myself in the foot getting it to work, wrecked '95 faces VHS if I’m feeling nostalgic.
V - Despecialized 2.0 again, or a patchwork of Poita’s scans with the Despecialized filling in the gaps because damn it, they look so good.
VI - Despecialized 2.5 because besides the blu and 2004 DVDs, it’s the only watchable version I have. '95 faces VHS is beyond wrecked at this point, and I refuse to watch the SE…unless I get my hands on the '97 laserdiscs.

sometimes time travellers into the past will replace their past selves once they arrive, most times they won’t.

I don’t remember seeing an episode like this…it sounds completely batshit insane. I’m guessing Voyager? 'Cuz I swear the writers had a fucking stroke every time they wrote a time travel episode. Some were enjoyable to watch, but christ almighty trying to actually understand them…

Wouldn’t Enterprise technically be an alternate reality than the normal Trek series? I mean, it’s pretty much confirmed that it takes place after the skewed events of First Contact. Either they pulled a Back to the Future and history was ‘re-written’, or the events of First Contact/Enterprise actually happened in yet another separate alt. timeline.

Also the aesthetic of the show was awful IMO. The sets were just…how do I put it…everything looked too fake and clean, and it was lit like a soap opera. The all metal/grey look can work, like in Voyager (which I loved the set design of) and especially the movie-era Ent refit; guess it fell victim to the bad side of over-designing. The really bad side.

When you were introduced to Star Wars for the first time
Time

I’m probably one of the younger farts around here…my first exposure was around Christmas 2000 or 01 at my grandparents. I walked in on my cousins watching Empire from the '95 VHS set, and I vividly remember seeing the walkers and being absolutely fascinated. I was in a huge robot frenzy at the time, and probably pestered them throughout the entire film asking “Is this a robot? Is that a robot?” I think they eventually just put in Jedi and left me alone, completely engrossed with the TV.

Went home, found my household had the same box set, and then the true obsession began. Over the next 8 or so years I brutally wore those tapes out (didn’t upgrade to the DVD set 'till 2008 or 9). Never found out about the prequels until Ep.III’s trailer hit…I have no clue how I stayed that ridiculously sheltered, but thank god I was.

RELEASED: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Special Longer Version)"
Time

I just recently picked up a box set of the original 6 films on VHS, all practically brand new, and presented in widescreen. I’d die if I could decently rip the Special Longer Version tape…shame my only VCR is a piece of crap. Need to invest in a decent S-VHS player…

Anyone ever thought of taking the 2009 theatrical Blu-ray and splicing in the deleted scenes? Like, something simple as downscaling it to 720p, then cleaning up the cut scenes, upscale to 720p, and edit them back in?

It’s still a far-cry from the Director’s Cut, but the SLV is much better than the theatrical cut.
