I remember these films most fondly with the 2002 sets, when I went to watch the '09 Wrath of Khan Blu-ray, something was seriously off-putting about it, it wasn’t what I remembered enjoying so much. I expect the others would recieve the same reaction.

I remember reading several different people’s comments saying that the '09 color-timing was actually closer to what they remembered seeing on the 35mm prints. The '09 is probably still too blue but the '02 also looks too red. 2016 is the goldilocks edition.

Wait, is the 2016 too gold? I thought it hit the mark perfectly, but then again, I never really noticed anything wrong with the Raiders bluray until this place pointed it out (which I’m still totally fine with…)

Personally, I’m not much of an AV whore. The Blurays are passable for me, but I can see why people despise them. Just gonna go on a hunch and say the early 2000s Collector’s Editions are your best bet in general. Also depends on what cut of each film you want.

The Motion Picture - Director’s Edition DVD for that, 2009 Bluray for the theatrical, and you’d be stuck with 4:3 VHS and laserdiscs for the Special Longer Version.

The Wrath of Khan - the new 2016 Bluray is absolutely perfect imo. Has both the theatrical and director’s cut. Just watch out for the first print run that had a mastering error (I never got around to replacing my copy, so I’m stuck with the back of Sulu’s head)

The Search for Spock - Collector’s Edition DVD. Bluray is among the worst in my opinion.

The Voyage Home - Collector’s Edition DVD. Bluray is plagued with DNR.

The Final Frontier - Ditto. People seem to overlook how butchered this one’s bluray is. The ending is the most obvious, when they’re on Sha Ka Ree, it’s a total wax fest.

The Undiscovered Country - 2009 Bluray for the theatrical cut and theatrical framing, Collector’s Edition DVD for the extended cut with a much larger framing. The VHS/laserdisc version is also a tad different, but not by much.

I’m no expert though, so take this with a grain of salt. I’ve also never watched the Laserdisc editions of the films (even though I own them, I really need to get a player).

Of the Shatner movies, I only have 2, 3 and 4 on DVD. I bought them in a set called “Star Trek: The Motion Picture Trilogy”.

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Picture-Trilogy-Domestic/dp/B001TH16CY

I don’t know anything about where they were sourced.

Here is a comparison between the old two-disc releases of Khan and SFS and their blu-ray counterparts ('09 blu-ray for Khan). Annoyingly, they did not provide dvd screengrabs for Voyage Home. I’d very much like to know what it looked like after seeing it in 35mm. The blu-ray’s colors are way off from what I saw on that print.

Your pics/links didn’t show up, man! I only have one screenshot comparison for the DVDs on-hand for IV. 2002 on top, 2009 on the bottom:

It’s a lot sharper and it has slightly colder colors, but there’s a ton of detail lost from DNR. Just look at Spock’s robe!

Edit: and here’s the Bluray if you wanted your daily dose of vomiting:

I think those are from the bluray masters. I have the single DVD releases of 2, 4, and 6 from 2009 that also use the bluray masters.

Sometimes they delete the files and it has to be recreated from scratch. I believe that this is Deep Space Nine’s problem right now.

IIRC someone from the effects team stated most if not all the files still existed, even put out a few sample renders which were beautiful.

That’s good to know. The effects work on that show was very well done. I feel like DS9’s vfx were more quality over quantity whereas a show like Babylon 5 had to take the opposite approach.

Dug up the Trekcore article: http://trekcore.com/blog/2013/05/deep-space-nine-in-high-definition-one-step-closer/

The Nebula class 1080p render is absolutely beautiful. They really put a ton of work into the models and VFX for DS9, it’s a shame CBS hasn’t shown any interest in remastering it.

The collector’s edition DVD of The Undiscovered Country had a few changes from the previous VHS director’s cut, mainly just this very, very cheesy ‘flashback’ effect during Spock’s mind meld interrogation of Valeris, showing clips of the people he listed off.

Still have all the collector’s edition DVDs of the TOS films, and they mostly look great. They all have a warm color palette, which is alright I suppose. I don’t own any of the TNG films from that series, but I do have the first run First Contact DVD, and christ I hope they used a better transfer for the Collector’s Edition DVD. DNR’d to death and back, and there’s something else I can’t put my finger on, but it just looks so, so wrong.

Man this show is a complete train wreck!

When I first saw this Klingon ship concept I thought immediately of “Stargate: Atlantis”. And that is not a good thing.

The video I link to below is a fair rundown of the situation thus far.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

Don’t know if I’ve hung my hat in here yet, so here goes:

  1. Empire Strikes Back
  2. Star Wars
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. The Force Awakens
  1. The Phantom Menace
  1. Revenge of the Sith
  1. Attack of the Clones

Haven’t seen Rogue One yet, so I can’t place it. My best guess is that it’d probably land between 4 and 5.

As for the prequels…yeah, I think TPM is the best out of the three, purely for technical reasons. It was shot on film, used practical effects in conjunction with CGI instead of purely CGI, and, at least pre-bluray DNR and digital destruction, it was a pretty film to look at. If you just shut your brain off, ignore the dialogue, and only pay attention to what’s on screen, aside from the CG characters, it is a visually enjoyable film.

Then again, I haven’t actually watched the movie in like 6 years after loosing the DVD and I don’t own it on Bluray, so I could just be blowing a bunch of smoke for all I know.

Search for Spock and Final Frontier both looked passably decent, if just barely. But there was still an unwanted amount of dnr and contrast-boosting going on.

There’s a 35mm scan of III floating around, and while it’s in dire need of a little cleanup and color correction, it’s miles better than the official bluray. For one, it’s much darker, which really helps set the mood better than that over-lit eyesore of a bluray. Heck, even the Genesis surface was much more convincing in places. The scan also included the laserdisc audio mix, which is crisper and more lively than the dull and flat mix used for the bluray.

Bwahhhh??? First I’m hearing of this. I wish someone would also scan a print of Voyage Home, it was beautiful!

I do recall reading of sound effects heard on the SFS laserdisc that are absent from the dvd and blu-ray mixes.

Grabbed it off the spleen a while back, should still be there. I honestly wish there were a scans of all 6 films…aside from II, nearly all were hit hard in some way or another on Bluray.

Here’s a quick little comparison album, if you’d like: http://imgur.com/a/qV7b5
Bluray screenshots are from Trekcore. For some reason, Imgur makes everything look darker, so I guess just open the pics in new tabs to fix it.

I’d argue that the Search for Spock bluray got shafted hard by brightness and color. The second Wrath of Khan blu hit it perfect, with the beiges and greys of the sets, and the uniforms being a more dark burgundy than medium/bright red.

FS can at times have more detail than its WS counterpart in the 4:3 area, as well as a few other technical uses.
That and I find it enjoyably nostalgic from time to time.

Yeah, you’d always loose horizontal information with full screen, even if they opened up the frame. More vertical information is neat though, until studio lights and boom mics start showing up.

Star Trek VI was a good example of this: http://imgur.com/a/94kBs

Sorry to rain on your parade guys (and IANAL), but I don’t think it’s a good idea to use any copyrighted material. So no Star Wars logo, no Kenner packaging. Better use the “Original Trilogy” logo at the bottom of this page!

We already use McQuarrie art on the twitter account, and nobody has had a cow about it, AFAIK.

Eh, I’ll bite. Where can I find a clean version of the Death Star logo?
