Out of curiosity, is there anything wrong with the blu-rays or Home Alone?
Home Alone 2 on Blu Ray has a rather low bitrate and the transfer is ok, not great. I have the UK Blu Ray and I think that looks fine but I’d love to see a film scan of it. HA2 has only had one release in HD in 2009 but the original has had three different remasters.
The 2015 Mastered-in-4K 1080p Blu Ray of Home Alone (the original) got raved about on Blu Ray.com but personally I thought it was a bit too dark and over-saturated. The UHD 4K disc (from what I’ve seen) seems to be more accurate. I remember the “Family Fun Edition” DVD being quite accurate to how I grew up watching it on TV/VHS and I assume the original 2008 Blu Ray used that same master.
Yes you are correct, the original 2009 BD uses the same master for the Family Fun edition, only issue with the 4K is the exclusion of the original stereo mix which both the 2009 and 2014 disks had.
I can also agree with the 2014 master looking a bit off, as with several 4K masters from Fox unfortunately. It’s a little skewed to the yellow side of things (Edward Scissorhands, Porky’s, and 3 Women are perfect examples) and thankfully the 4K based on the caps I’ve seen eliminates that issue. I never understood honestly why Fox has skewed several of its masters to the yellow spectrum but my friend theorizes it’s their attempt to recreate what an image would look like projected through a bulb.
The last home video release to have the original mono track was the 1998 DVD btw
Was this print ever fully scanned?
That’s cool looking
Also the term “Universal licensed from Polygram” is inaccurate, Universal flat out owns much of their library now, MGM owns everything before 1996 iirc
When I say “most of Polygram’s library,” I mean that they own most of them that originally contained the Icarus-style logo. While the rest that MGM owns, originally use the 1992-1996 logo.
I think one of the only pre-Universal PolyGram titles that MGM doesn’t own is Trainspotting, but that’s only due to Miramax having US distribution rights
I’m pretty sure the UK prints had the Icarus logo, I know the UK VHS release had a home video variant of it

I know the original Big Lebowski DVD and VHS opened with this logo but I’m not sure if it was the one seen theatrically or not
Current releases plaster it with the Universal logo as you said but play the regular fanfare for it and then a black screen accompanies the start of the music for the movie (the Polygram logo played over it originally), but here’s where it gets bizarre
In TV versions the Universal logo plays in silence and the end of the logo is when the music for the movie starts
If someone could obtain the original closing credits along with John Milner’s original death date and get them scanned, I’m hoping to integrate them with the Blu-ray footage as part of my 1973 theatrical cut restoration, which I plan to start work, and a thread, on after I finish the 1971 theatrical cut of THX-1138.
Don’t forget the mono mix as well and the opening
as a bit of an update, my friend is redoing seasons 1-4 since these were done a while ago and he wasn’t exactly satisfied with them
I’ve also started a youtube channel where I post individual clips of the show with the original music restored, the channel just started so it’s still very small but if anyone wants a link to it please PM me and let me know
@DarkJedi I would love to see this. Are there any extras or behind the scenes stuff in your version? I have an old rip of the unrated version but am always interested in comparing 😃
the Shout! Factory Friday the 13th collection has an HD version of the unrated cut so this thread is no longer necessary
Can I donate 20 to both?
still sadly no HDR
Are they gonna fix the “extra” shots?
sorry about the cancellation though
Apparently Kino had a vote on their Facebook page, and the fans chose the theatrical cut over the extended for the 4K. Damn. Ah, well.
what do you mean?
I didn’t know movies shot on Super 35 actually had prints like this, I assumed they would be anamorphic prints instead
PM sent
if you want to know the person to contact just let me know in PM

I would love information on the restore including the original music.
Seasons 3-6 and 9 are completely done, seasons 1 and 2 are having some work redone on them, I’m working on season 10 and my friend is working on seasons 1, 2, 7, and 8

Honestly I prefer 4K77/4K83 over despecialized, the despecialized editions are a good effort but they’re clearly frankenstein edits and at times it really shows. They also use sources that are inherently sharpened and noise reduced.
Notice how in this frame alone how Luke’s face looks extremely waxy on the despecialized edition but far more organic on 4K83.
While it is true that 4K77 has inconsistent quality and graininess in its presentation, you got to understand how this movie was shot and made. It didn’t have as fancy filmstock like Empire or Jedi did, and all of the effects and desert scenes didn’t help things either. A lot of the inconsistencies have to do with how the movie was shot rather than the print itself.
So once again, despecialized is a good effort but I think if you want the true versions as seen in theaters back in the 70s and 80s then 4K77/4K83 are more for you.
I’m sure some of you have stated this before but I’ll go ahead and say it anyway
I highly doubt Cameron is the reason why the current BD editions exclude the mono track, from what it seems he really only cares about visuals and doesn’t care so much about audio, just to at least want his movies to sound good. He also seemingly allowed it to be included on the old DVD releases and never asked for a newer DVD master and not include it (the 2006 BD even uses the same master as the 2001 DVD and he didn’t seem to insist on leaving off the mono track)
I suspect it’s most likely MGM’s laziness is the reason why the mono track isn’t restored considering this isn’t the first time an earlier DVD release of theirs had a mono track and the subsequent blu-ray edition of the same title excluded it in favor of a 5.1 track (just look at Red Dawn and In the Heat of the Night (pre-Criterion) to name a couple of examples)
If Arrow is working on a 4K of this movie it would most likely include the mono track
