I have tweaked the lightsaber sound FX slightly, but that was one of the unfinished elements in the clips posted. Amongst one of the tweaks I've added subwoofer channel FX for the sabers and its given them some great depth.

Oooh, that's what I was hoping to hear. Well done, sir.

Animated interactive menus

Language selection menu
Easter eggs

Disc 2 ( to be released a few months after disc 1)
Star wars Revisited "Spaceballs" version
Trailers
Deleted scenes
The making of the Star Wars saga (a new documentary spanning from the making of ANH right up to behind the scenes of "revisited"
FX comparisons
& more

That sounds like a truly amazing DVD set. I am (and have been for some time now) more excited about this release than pretty much any DVD release, commercial or otherwise, in quite a while! Your work continues to inspire. Congratulations again on everything you've accomplished!

Well done, sir! I like that a lot. I hadn't thought of Adywan's name like that, but it fits perfectly!

My goodness -- the Tantive IV's hallways look beautiful!

Brilliant work, Adywan. The major changes were wonderful, of course, but I was really reveling in the details -- the blinking chest plate lights, the enlargement of Alderaan in the Death Star window (at least, I think it was enlarged -- either way, there was something about it that looked even more beautiful and majestic than I remember), the beautiful color correction . . . and the fact that for the first time, even though I knew it was coming, Greedo's performance (and I'm delighted with the fact that it can now be referred to as such) actually made me feel as though he was real for a moment.

Thank you again, for everything. It's almost like watching it again for the first time. I know that's been said countless times before, but it really is an achievement that bears repeating. Especially with this crowd, who I'm sure has seen the movie so many times that it takes something as extraordinary as your edit to inspire such a feeling.

Video codec stuff can be a bit confusing if you're trying to figure it out for the first time. RAR files can also be quite confusing. I remember not getting the concept behind them the first time I had to deal with them -- so don't worry, you're not alone in having trouble!

While I'm not entirely sure, I think you're having trouble working with the RAR files. Simply put, RAR files are like ZIP files in the sense that they are compressed, but something special about RARs is that they can be used to split one single file into several separate files for the sake of expediting downloading. Think of it as having a painting mailed to you, but where the complete canvas is too big and heavy for one truck to deliver it quickly. So to expedite the shipping, the post office rips the canvas into three pieces, and sends them on three separate trucks, so that they can all get to you faster, and all at the same time. Because the canvas has been ripped into several pieces, the only way that you can see the painting in its entirety is by stitching it back together first. With RAR files, this is called "unpacking", and is what several other forum members have mentioned as part of the solution for you. There are several free and easily-accessible programs out there that complete this unpacking process for you, including (for Windows) a popular one, WinRAR (note that the link is to a direct download of the program for a Windows PC). Download and install this program on your PC, then use it to open the first of the three RAR files you've downloaded. WinRAR will then stitch them together for you, and give you one, large, and complete video file that you can then play in Windows Media Player or VLC. It is important to note that the RAR files themselves, because they are compressed, are not considered media files (like the separate pieces of canvas are not considered to be the painting), and therefore cannot be played in your media player. You need to unpack, or stitch back together, the media file first, then load that newly-saved media file into your media player.

I hope this helps! Good luck getting everything working properly.

So you've been using the Logaryth/Logarith codec to render everything, including rendering all your footage to switch between your NLE and After Effects? I had been meaning to ask how you were keeping raw video quality up while switching between applications.

I'd like to also offer my congratulations on achieving so much over the past few weeks. It's really exciting!

P.S. Thanks for responding to my previous AE question -- I hadn't gotten a chance to respond and thank you earlier. I'm not sure whether you fully answered my question, but I'll leave that for another time (it's late, and I have some editing of my own to do . . .)

That screenshot is actually extremely informative, Adywan -- and it's given me some insight as to how you're approaching some of your changes. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your compositing methods!

And check out those mask points on the X-Wing! Are you rotoing that, or is it keyframeable at all?

Take care,
Sojourn

P.S. Not to get all crazy technical here, but why are the masks visible, even though it's a video layer that is selected? Are those masks on that layer? And if so, why? I have a few guesses, but instead of writing them all out, I figured I'd just ask you.

I know that for me, part of what's making it so hard to wait is the fact that I don't feel like watching the official DVDs anymore -- the color imbalances and poor-looking laser effects (among other things) are just too distracting. And yet I want to watch Star Wars . . . but just don't want to watch the versions I have.

It's just a testament to the impact of your work, Adywan. I'm looking forward to re-experiencing the films, and truly enjoying (i.e. not being distracted by the inconsistencies) what I'm seeing on the screen for the first time in a long while.

It would be great if you could post what you're looking for in a cover design -- including preferred screenshots, project specifications, DVD contents, description blurb, etc. -- in an easily-accessible place (i.e. this thread's first post) for present and future reference. I've read every post in this thread at least once over the course of the last . . . long time . . . and even I can't remember if you've given all of the specific details you would like on a prospective cover, at least all in one place. Even if you had, I wouldn't know which page to look at, and which of the 2000+ posts they're in.

This way, cover-makers will have a place to start, and you'll have some input into making their finished products conform to an approved standard, which will include things you'll want to make sure are included.

While I'm on the topic of resources -- something I've always struggled with is getting the raw cover art and screenshot material (at high enough resolutions with which to make DVD covers) that many others use in their covers. Any links to which you might direct me/anyone else thinking of putting together a cover for Adywan?

Thanks, and take care,

I'm sorry I had to miss it! I definitely wanted to be there, and will hopefully be able to make it for the next one (if there is another one -- if not before the release, perhaps after?). I'll certainly be looking forward to the transcript!

P.S. Congratulations on 100 pages of comments, Adywan! Here's to 100 more (or something like that) . . .

Sorry I didn't reply sooner -- I just wanted to let you know that while I wish I could be there for the chat, I won't be able to make it. Might it be possible to post a transcript of it afterwards, so those of us who weren't able to be there can still read what was discussed?

Thanks, and take care,

Absolutely fantastic work, sir. The new schematic and Yavin shots in particular look amazing, and the lightsaber/blaster fixes, along with the color correction, make everything in the world (Star Wars and otherwise) seem all right.

You should really be very proud of the work you've done.

That sounds amazing -- I can't wait to see the fruits of your labor!

I don't know what you're going in for, but I hope whatever it is goes well. Make sure you take care of yourself, and don't stress out about the edit while you're recovering -- your health is the most important thing. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I have to say, I liked the look of the ROTJ laser better, because of the center one. I seem to recall that before the Special Editions, the Death Star in ANH also had a center blast, and didn't have the "beady" converging lasers that I think make it look weaker. I haven't checked, though, so I could be wrong (I may just be remembering ROTJ).

Either way, though, adywan, would you mind sharing what you changed about the Death Star laser in that shot? I know you said that you repainted all the lasers in the film, so I'm assuming you touched up the shot in some way, even if you maintained the "beady" look.

Congratulations on recovering so much of the data, adywan! I'm really glad that you didn't lose all of your work. Like I said, I've been there, and I know how much it stinks (that's a bit of an understatement, actually).

Anyways, yes, I too would like to know how much money you think this is going to cost. Are you going Firewire or USB? I've found that external drives (in particular, ones from Western Digital) have been going on sale a lot these days -- stores like Best Buy seem to have a sale on them almost every week. If it would help, it might also be possible for one of us in the US to get you the drives if there was a fantastic deal on them that you couldn't get in the UK, and then ship them to you . . . of course, we'd have to worry about packing them reeeeeeeeally well, but it's just a thought. Whatever it takes to get you the equipment you need, for the best price, in the fastest time, right?

I'm so sorry to hear about all of this, adywan! I really hope you are able to recover your files. Though it sounds like you've recovered almost everything (thanks to your DVD backups), right? Except for that one disc?

In any case, I can understand just how frustrated and let-down you must feel right now. I've had (more than) my share of bad luck with external hard drives, and have been caught in situations where I had put in months of work on a project and then lost pretty much all of my editing to my hard drives dying. And while I don't want to tell you what to do, I do want to reiterate just how much I appreciate everything you've done on this edit, and the dedication and quality of work you've shown. I also want to re-echo everything that has been said about how excited we are for this edit, and indeed, how hungry we are for it, as for many of us (certainly myself), this is the only version of the film we were going to watch from this point forward.

Again, I hope you don't feel as though I am pressuring you in any way. My only intent is to encourage. And while I would definitely understand if, given all you've gone through, you gave up at this point, I just want to say that I would certainly love to see the finished adywan edit of Star Wars, in all its glory.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help. All the best for your files' recovery.

Take care,
Sojourn

EDIT: Wow, a few people responded before I finished typing! I found nohandluke's comments particularly moving, and I wanted to say that I echo many of the thoughts he shared. We're really pulling for you, adywan.
