Congratulations on the camera, ady (man, you got me, too!)! I know I haven't really been vocal much recently (work has been a little hectic), but I've caught up on the past week or two of posts, and it looks like things are moving along splendidly. I'm going to need to dig deeper back to find the source of all this shooting-new-sequences talk so I can figure out exactly what you're going to be doing, but I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of it! And, as before, if you need some help, let me know.

Take care,

Sojourn

Here is Ady's list of new things he needs to film.

Thanks for the link! I had seen that, but I meant that I wanted to read about when the idea first came up, and what his motivation/vision is. I'm curious to see how any new elements fit in with the existing film, but there's no one I trust more than adywan to do new footage right. :-)

Thanks,

Sojourn

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I just wanted to congratulate you on the new asteroid field, Adywan -- it looks spectacular. And now that I've seen the TIEs firing, it just looks wrong without it (if you watch the comparison clip, and look at the 2004 version, it seems so anticlimactic to have the shot of the TIEs following the Falcon, and then cut to the Falcon without any laser bolts coming at it)!

Take care,

hey, sojourn, good to see you around here again.

I'm a bit worried about doing any more tweaking to Yoda because it could become overdone and smearing would become very noticeable through the warping technique used to animate his face.

Likewise. :-)

That makes sense, about Yoda; are you using the standard distortion tools in AE, or something like the Puppet Tool in CS3? I've done my share of warping and I know what you mean about not wanting to overdo it; it may just have been that I was looking for the movements in his face, and therefore overanalyzing what I was seeing, that made it look unnatural. You've always been great at using the distortion tools subtly, which makes the changes organic rather than obviously digitally manipulated.

Thanks for your response,

It's been a while since I posted here, but I've been checking in occasionally to see how this project has been progressing, and, as always, it's very impressive! I just watched the most recent clip, and I love how Yoda actually looks like he's pronouncing the "w" in the words he's saying. And, of course, the color correction work you've done is incredible -- Revisited is worth watching just for that, not to mention all the other fantastic tweaks. I agree with what others have said about the Yoda clip still needing a bit of work to make it fully believable, but I do think what you've done so far is wonderful.

All the best, as always,

That scene was just a test. there is a lot more work and mattes to add to get it looking right

Sounds good to me. Thanks for the reply!

Also, about Slave I following the Falcon to Bespin -- I think this is an example of us not seeing every step of the process, so that Vader and Fett's reveal in the refreshments room in Cloud City comes as more of a shock. Witholding the information, and us only knowing that Fett was following them after all, makes the whole arrival at Cloud City far more tense.

Just some thoughts -- what do you think?

I haven't posted in this thread before now, but I've definitely been following your progress. Great work so far, Ady! As someone else pointed out, it really is amazing how much of a difference proper coloration has on the feeling of a scene -- just looking at your screenshots at the beginning of this thread, it has been impressed upon me just how much alteration happened with the 2004 DVDs with blue and green casts, as well as how your color correction brings back the feeling I had when watching the films way-back-when. :-)

A note about the cockpit transparency test -- so far, it looks great, and is undoubtedly an improvement over the official release. I did notice, however, that in the original DVD version, when the snowspeeder banks, one can see the reflection of light/snow/change in view through the window on the metal struts of the cockpit. This didn't carry over into your version -- I'm guessing it's just because you applied a new matte over the original cockpit struts to mask out the laser beams, and you hadn't gotten around to adding some of those more subtle reflections. I just wanted to bring it to your attention, in case you hadn't noticed (unlikely, but I thought I'd mention it nonetheless :-)), and you find it might be something you want to add. Again, great work so far, and I can't wait to see more!

EDIT: Just saw your post, OBtwosy. Did you use Disk Utility to burn Ady's DVD9, or have you just used it in the past? Have you used it to burn dual-layer disks before?

sorry this is late - I've been away for a bit. yes. Disk Utility worked just fine for Dual Layer - Ady's, and some ADigitalMan stuff. cheers!

Thanks for your response -- I'll keep this in mind! :-)

For Mac - I use Toast Titanium. It's a fantastic program, though you have to pay for it (although if you really don't want to I'm sure you can figure something out ;-)

I don't know how Toast handles the layer break, though, so I don't know if you need the fix included with the torrent or not (I applied it just in case).

Thanks for your feedback! I don't have Toast, mainly because I've never needed a non-free burning program for the media work I've done. Barring other feedback, I guess we'll see how the programs I have work.

What are Mac users out there using to burn the DVD9? I'm (very slowly -- seed, people, seed!) downloading the fixed torrent (the one with the ISO), and looking forward to burning it once it finishes. IMGBurn is Windows-only, so I'm wondering what has worked for everyone else out there on the Mac platform. I usually use SimplyBurns for my burning needs -- has anyone tried that application for this edit?

Also, about the fix -- I know you said that it's only if you're using IMGBurn to burn the .iso that you'd need to apply the fix, Ady, but could it hurt to do apply it just in case? Better safe than sorry, I say.

Thanks, and take care,

I don't know if this was ever addressed, but if it has, I've forgotten it already. Damn aging mind of mine.

What was the source of Luke's "Biggs! Biggs!" line during the Death Star battle? I'm assuming this is a new recording, and if so, who's the voice actor? It' sounds pretty much just like Mark Hamill after all.

If I'm not mistaken, it was from the Radio Drama -- which means that it was indeed Mark Hamill. :-)

I just tried getting your label and while it looked fine on screen in the browser, once I saved it and tried to bring it up in some other program, it wouldn't load.

Same here -- I recall having similar problems trying to save images from Rapidshare before, as well. :-( Anybody have any ideas why this happens? I'm using Firefox.

Cool job with the green, though!

I'm really looking forward to your torrents, -1! I can't wait to get my hands on the DVD-9.

Also, MoveAlong -- have you checked out SimplyBurns (http://simplyburns.berlios.de/index.html), or Burn (http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/)? I'm not sure if SimplyBurns is a universal application, but Burn is (I personally prefer SimplyBurns, though).

Yaaaayyyyy! :-)

Thank you again, Ady! I can't wait to get this and start sharing it with everyone to whom I've already promised copies!

(. . . speaking of which -- I'll definitely be seeding a torrent once it's up. Any word on who might be making that happen?)

Does anyone have the purist edition? Is there a torrent of it anywhere?

From what I understand, the Purist Edition has only been released via the newsgroups and a PIF chain. There is no torrent as of yet, to my knowledge -- I'm hoping someone will make one, too, so I can get a copy of it, and help to seed. I'd also be up for joining a PIF chain, once the originators in the US get their copies.

As always, all the best, ady. You know there are a ton of Anchorheads (Adyheads?) here who have got your back, both creatively and (more importantly) personally. :-)

I'm still hoping that you're going to end up getting a paid compositing job because of this (you wouldn't be the first to get a job in the industry because of a freely-released Star Wars fan project). As someone starting to enter the film and digital editing industry, I know that if I ever am in a position to hire someone for effects work, and I thought we could make it work for you to work with us, I'd be pushing really hard for my team to make that happen.

Anyway, thank you again for everything, and make sure to take care of yourself. We may not know you in person, but we've all grown really fond of you around here -- and fond of you as a person, not as an editing machine.

Take care,
Sojourn
