Smithers' Prequel Fanedits (a Work In Progress)
Time

So I’ve decided to upload my rough version of the opening for TPM. Let me know what you think. Note that many of the ship/explosion sounds are either missing or wrong, this is just a proof of concept. I suggest reading the title crawl before watching it:

It is a time of foreboding for the galaxy. After centuries of peace, many isolated star systems have been invaded by the Trade Federation.

Queen Padme Amidala of the peaceful planet Naboo has managed to escape her home system with the assistance of two Jedi, guardians of peace and justice in the Galactic Republic.

To prevent further oppression from the Federation, she must venture to the galactic capital of Coruscant to plead for intervention to save her people and restore peace to the galaxy…

EDIT: The youtube video has been blocked because Youtube detected John Williams’ music. I have disputed the copyright claim but in the meantime I’ve uploaded it to Vimeo

I’ll definitely do that for AOTC and ROTS, but I don’t want to re-edit this movie for a 3rd time with another source.

Yeah I learned the hard way with Jumper, it makes things a serious pain in the ass.

The new opening is now up. Check the main post

I’m sorry to say but I think your new version turned out for the worse. I liked that you had Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon talking about the Invasion army and watching it through the window, I may not have been clear enough in my earlier comment. What I meant was that you should keep that sequence except go directly from this shot: (https://www.google.ca/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiR0_XEoMbLAhVC0WMKHXryBgUQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fstarwars.wikia.com%2Fwiki%2FFile%3ATrade_Federation_Invasion.png&bvm=bv.117218890,d.cGc&psig=AFQjCNE9lqaAjud6ioE_gbGyMxX4LgoZTA&ust=1458253631320579) to this one: (https://www.google.ca/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi05JPioMbLAhUE52MKHVpsCHoQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fstarwars.wikia.com%2Fwiki%2FInvasion_of_Naboo&bvm=bv.117218890,d.cGc&psig=AFQjCNE9lqaAjud6ioE_gbGyMxX4LgoZTA&ust=145825363132057 But save the forest part for later. I also think that the meeting scene on Naboo would play better if the last shot was the Queen giving a concerned look.

Do 5.1, unless you have a need for an extra channel, which you probably don’t.

With the video source that I got, Final Cut Pro didn’t give me the option to put it into surround 😕 Some clips were in dual mono, so I got that fixed, though. I have a new version of the opening ready to upload to Vimeo, but the wifi currently isn’t working on that computer

You could rip your dvd or blu-ray and mux the stereo audio to your video source

Also, I’m looking forward to your new intro!

What other spinoffs should Disney make?

Kids aren’t that stupid. If they are confused, they Google search. A kid stupid enough to do that probably can’t even walk. You never hear any confusion about the various superhero reboots over the years. If a kid is young enough, there will be no confusion as the rebooted prequels will be the only prequels they know. Lucas’ prequels will be forgotten by non superfans same as the Ewok movies and the Holiday Special. Happy ending for everyone!

Most young kids also have parents nudging them in the “correct” directions.

Both of these are true, I don’t see PT reboots happening anytime soon but the PT may eventually end up in the “Legends” category. I would have higher hopes for this but the fact that their comics and TV series are so closely tied to the prequels and have retconned the shit out of the OT so i don’t know if Disney will completely erase our current versions of the PT from canon. I do see the possibility of them doing a “special edition” of them by going in and trying to fix things up.

When it comes to the opening scene, you have the right idea but the audio is rough which makes the cuts seem jarring. I like the scene where the old man says “invasion” but in order to make it a heavier line I would leave a 1-2 second pause before he says it and when he does say it, cut to Queen Amidala and hold the shot there for a few seconds as the music builds. Afterward you will see the army going to toward the city/palace rather than the forest (this shot: http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/0/0b/Trade_Federation_Droid_Army.png/revision/latest?cb=20140622175536) and save the forest sequence for when Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan meet Jar Jar.

If you aren’t already, I strongly recommend editing with 6.1 channel audio, it will make things move along much more smoothly and moving lines around will be much more seamless.

Overall I thought the idea and the goal was good, but I think my suggestions would make them work better.

Can you show a few screenshots of this?

Your on the right track with the changes being done for TPM.

Thanks! And sure, here are a few although I am not nearly done the entire movie I have a few ready: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/165422/picture:1
I do realize that a few parts of the sand are a few pixels off but once the mask is layered on top of the video you would never be able to tell

If you dub Jar-Jar in english then I think this would be the very first edit to actually do that

Nope! I showed a rough cut of my Jar Jar re-dub to this discussion a couple of weeks ago. If you want to see it, here it is: https://vimeo.com/152045806 (password is wetlands)

Cool stuff, obviously very rough but I’m down for an Irish smartass Gungan, you may actually be able to make him funny!
