X-Men: Apocalypse 7.5/10

Pretty great until the CGI-filled climax. All of the dialogue for the first half is very interesting but may be hard to get through upon rewatching. I loved the younger cyclops and storm but angel was pretty poorly done (that marks two movies where he was thrown in for no reason). Apocalypse was a pretty good villain but don’t be expecting a complex character. Magneto was probably the best character in the movie, his motivations are 100% understandable, you can really tell Brian Singer loves the character.

Although I gave it the same rating as Captain America: Civil War I think it’s a step above that. Recommended.

The problem is that it is impossible for the prequel trilogy to work both ways. It is impossible to have your cake and eat it too. If you watch the prequels as back story after watching the original trilogy, you would want to see a story explaining how Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader. If you watch the prequels as the first three episodes, you would want for the revelation that Anakin Skywalker is Darth Vader to remain secret until the revelation in Episode V. It is logically impossible for the prequels to both explain Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader and keep it a secret at the same time.

Challenge accepted, read through my thread dude.

The Awakening
Time

Finally got around to watching this. Most of the editing was seamless save for a few audio transitions being a little too loud. I watched a lower quality version so I can’t comment on how good it really was.

Problems:
-Han and Chewie are planting bombs in the base even though their only intention is a rescue mission.
-It’s never (properly) explained that Kylo Ren is Han’s son with the Snoke scenes missing. I suggest making that a reveal and have them not mention it but keep the sad look on Han’s face when he sees Kylo. Cut it all out until Han’s death scene.
-A few scenes don’t flow very well to each other (suggestions to fix this below)

Suggestions:
-Rather than cutting to Kylo Ren when poisonous gas starts coming out of the floor grates, let that scene play out and finish. Once that scene’s done, cut to Kylo Ren getting the news of their departure and then cut back to the falcon in hyperspace.
-Cut down Maz’s weird lines (“Where’s my boyfriend/I like that Wookiee” and The eyes monologue with her crawling on the table)
-Use a the special effects done in this video to make the scene play out more coherently.

Overall it was pretty good, your ambition pays off.

The podrace scenes sounds like a wonderful idea, for so many reasons.
But, would that necessitate either recasting the yellow pod we see as Watto’s all along?

No, in the montage of Anakin’s life, you see him fixing up his podracer and using it in the first race. He never damages it or anything and Anakin owning his own pod isn’t a secret. That whole subplot is gone in my edit.

You’ve got me so hooked on this edit! This idea sounds genius!

Thanks!

I just think TPM’s soundtrack is perfectly fine the way it is, adding new music would just feel weird unless it’s an original fan composition. But even then it would have to be subtle, like imperial march was at the end of the credits. Although I’ve always wanted something like this to be incorporated into the prequels somehow: https://youtu.be/fA-aWZ2RKSE?list=PL37AA958F7660C874&t=395
I simply love the way 6:35-6:45 is played, even if it’s just another rendition of the main theme it sorta feels an inspiration for Across The Stars. It was never used in the film though.

Yeah I plan on using some of the most obscure SW themes out there, my edit will feel much different than the original because of this. TPM’s OST has a few great themes but overall find it quite forgettable. I like that song, I may have a use for it.

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread

If you were going to open on tatooine you could change how the characters get there, and their motives.

Qui Gon might be there alone already with the intention of recruiting Anakin.

Obi Wan might be on Coruscant already with his master Yoda.

The Naboo cruiser could blast through the blockade and land on Tatooine, where upon a chance meeting Padme pleads for help with Qui Gon, who initially doesn’t want to get involved.

Anakin could be the turning point, who only agrees to leave his family on Tatooine and train if Qui Gon agrees to help?

Sounds infinitely more like ANH. Cool ideas!

I’ve also 100% decided on an idea I’ve discussed in the prequel radical redux thread. The change is that before Qui-Gon even encounters Anakin, you see a few scenes of his life as a slave and a podracer. My edit will contain two podraces, one where Anakin loses second place to sebulba and another one where he uses Qui-Gon’s advice and wins the race. Both races have been edited very differently. Neither races will use the exact same shot twice, they’ve been edited into one-lap races as well.

The first race contains many racer death scenes and showcases Sebulba cheating, it will contain Anakin’s conversations with both his mother and Sebulba before the race. It shows how dangerous the races can be and how much Anakin risks every time he goes out onto the track. The music is intense and holds suspense, the entire first race is about 4-5 minutes long. The second race is more about Anakin’s emotions and his first time truly accepting and channeling the force, it will only contain Qui-Gon’s words to Anakin before the race. It will be scored with much more emotional music and hopefully it’ll feel very much like the final trench run with Luke in ANH. Both races will be edited to feel both fresh and non-repetitive.

Jar Jar will make a short appearance on Tatooine in the edit but he will be color-corrected and dubbed. He’ll just be portrayed as an alien that exists in the universe but isn’t really a character. Same thing goes for the Gungan who announces chancellor Palpatine’s election in one of my clips, he’s just an anonymous Gungan, not Jar Jar.

I will upload clips for all of this once I have some dialogue recorded for Anakin, the voice actor I’ve picked has quite a bit of experience in plays and has also done a few commercials. I’m confident that he’ll be able to bring the emotion that the character needs in his line delivery.

My shotgun mic came in! I’ll start doing some test with Anakin’s lines once I set everything up on stands and stuff. It’ll be great.

I’ve decided to record my own Alien dialogue. As much as I like the anti-cheese voices, Jeremy cut out many Neimoidian scenes that I’m keeping in my version and you can clearly hear echoes of the original voices in the background. I’ll try to mimic his voices as much as possible while also drawing inspiration from voices like Jabba’s and Greedo’s.

Idea: Preserving Attack of the Clones - The IMAX Experience

It’s easy to get Attack of the Clones under an hour. Just redub the analysis droid scene to imply Jango is on Geonosis rather than Kamino and change the crawl to imply that the clones have already been created and the debate is more about whether or not to deploy them. Then cut the romance similar to the Phantom Editor.

The question is whether or not you’d really want Attack of the Clones under an hour.

Expanding upon that, you could have Anakin dreaming of Obi-Wan’s danger rather than his mother’s. He could go directly to Geonosis from Naboo.
