I don't think the OT ever painted Anakin as a hero. Obiwan called him the "best starfighter in the galaxy, and a good friend." So he was a nice guy with first class skills. He didn't have to be "the chosen one", he could have just been one of the guys.

UPDATE: Per Big Shiny Robot, Lucasfilm has sent the following response to the new rumor:
"This is completely false. Right now, we are totally focused on bringing Star Wars to 3D, and we have no plans to do an Indiana Jones conversion."
Cheer up Indy fans. There's always the possibility of this happening after the Star Warsconversions have come out...in 2018 or so.
This last sentence really makes me sad.
