70 mm print of the Empire Strikes Back Differences
Time
I mentioned this in the Puggo thread: Of course, since it his heavily edited, not always razor sharp on the details and is pan and scan, we need to be extra careful when relying on it for differences.

One of the things I hope someone could double check on is extra (or at least more pronounced lines of dialogue) of Lando talking to Han in the background when 3PO is cussed at by that other protocol droid in Bespin before he is blasted. The 8mm version had this bit of dialogue I didn't hear in the GOUT or the 2004 mix. Maybe it is there (like the "Fall back!" lines on Hoth) but just buried deeper in the mix.

The Puggo Edition - webpage and screenshots (Super 8 transfers - Released)

Well, it does have a lot in common with the Story of the Empire Strikes Back album. Many of the alternate takes are there in both, including the many of Carrie Fisher on the Falcon. The odds seem to be good that both are from the 70mm. The beauty of the 8mm reels is now we can see visual differences as well. Of course, since it his heavily edited, not always razor sharp on the details and is pan and scan, we need to be extra careful when relying on it for differences.

Excellent job on this, Pugs! This is an absolute must have!

I just watched the Empire reels and something stuck out at me. I had another look and I believe I have found something quite significant. Check out these screen caps:

2006 GOUT:

Same image from the 1985 CAV Laser:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DV_EM_1_85LD.jpg

And the same image from the Super 8 reel:

Another frame from the GOUT as the Emperor fades in:

Same frame from the '85 Laser:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DV_EM_2_85LD.jpg

And the Super 8 reel:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DV_EM_2_S8.jpg

The above shot on the Super 8 reel corresponds with reports regarding the 70mm cut of TESB. In the 70mm version, the Emperor's hologram doesn't fade in, just like the Super 8 reel.

Another example:

GOUT DVD:

Same frame from the '85 Laser:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DISH1_1985LD.jpg

And the same frame from the Super 8:
http://starkiller72.googlepages.com/DISH1_S8.jpg

Again, this corresponds to the 70mm cut.

I believe this is the first confirmed visual evidence of alternate footage existing within one of the films!

Also, this section of Michael Matessino's 70mm list that appeared in Film Score Monthly also appears in the Super 8 reel:

In the final scene, there is no tracked music from "Yoda and the Force". The scene begins with the first establishing shot of the rebel fleet, then cuts inside the Falcon for Lando to say, "Luke, we're ready for take-off" (but a different take of this was used). After Luke says (voice over), "Good luck, Lando" the scene cuts to inside the rebel cruiser where Luke says, "I'll meet you at the rendezvous, " etc. Not in this version are two more establishing shots of the fleet and an interim effects shot over which Lando says, "When we find Jabba the Hutt and that bounty hunter we'll contact you."

Add all of this to the numerous (and already known) differences in the Super 8 audio and this becomes even more intriguing.

Fascinating!

ESB:

Video:
The Emporer does not fade in in his communique with Vader.
Millenium Falcon Satellite dish not visible with Luke on weather vane.

Audio
- Han saying 'watch this' as he tries to jump to hyperspace in the asteriod field. Although the dialogue hasn't changed different emphasis are put on certain words."
- Luke - "I don't pick up any life readings" - Different take
- Han - "I'm going back" - Different take
- More rebels calls of 'retreat' when Walkers attack
- Leia "They're getting closer [star destroyers] - Different take - she stutters it twice
- Cloud Car pilots - Different line - will confirm with actual line asap.
- Leia "I know where Luke is" is replaced by "we must go back" or something similar
- C3P0 - new line just before "I thought that hairy beast would be the end of me" - It's something like "I'm glad we are back together"
- The frigate at the end looks decidedly different - i will have to check this.
Cloud City Security - "Any aggressive move will not be tollerated!"
Cloud Cit Security - "Permission granted to land on platform 3-2-7. Any deviattion will" - Han cuts of comms.
Leia - "Lando, hurry up, we've got company!" (as Lando is rescuing Luke from the weathervane)
C3P0- "Get away from there, you don't know how to fix the hyperdrive!

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

I think the other thing that this does is make the DS a bit more dangerous for our heroes to be sneaking around in. They could be spotted at any time.

This will be such a trip to watch. This shot (and a few others I have suggested) has existed in my head for a while. It will be rather surreal to actually watch these at home on the big screen. I suppose the walking troopers and the retracting bridge will have some sound effects? That's what make this edit, and DE's and Tellan's edits so great is the boldness to say, "I've made a lot of special modifications myself...so if you will just get on board, we'll get out of here."

The "EditDroid" Trilogy DVD Info and Feedback Thread (Released)
Time
I'll burn the first three discs for Erik and MoveAlong and if the pics arrive in the next day or so, I'll add a DVD-ROM folder to the last disc. If it appears to be taking more than a day or so, I'll send Erik and MoveAlong the discs. It the disc art and arrive by then, I'll trust them to add the art to the disc folders. It's easy and there is some extra space on the fourth disc.

In case anyone is curious, here is my set of original EditDroid releases.

Concerning Fan Edits
Time
With regard to Star Wars edits, George Lucas is entirely to blame (I don't necessarily mean this in a negative way either). With the Special Editions, George threw out any concept of canon and continuity. Whether you like it or whether you don't, everything is fair game as far as ideas and edits are concerned. If we want to make improvements to films (as long as one doesn't profit from this project) I think it is fine. Even preservation projects to restore the theatrical version of films that have been changed later are fan edits on a small scale.

Most fan edits are and should be made to please the editors and no one else. If you happen to agree with their editorial choices and enjoy the new version, that's great.

With the regard to criticism of edits, constructive or otherwise, the editor should be open to criticism. On the other side of the coin, the viewer of the fan edit ought to have the right to offer criticism, but still should keep in mind that the edit isn't for them, so if there are things they dislike, that is their own choice to dislike it and the editor is of course under no obligation to please everyone and anyone.

Like it says at the start of the MagFan edits, "It is said that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly upon our point of view. This is merely another."
