Next thing you know, LFL will be trademarking other words like 'Death', 'Star', 'Skywalker', and 'Luke'.

You forgot "galaxy", "battle", "space", "ship", "and", "of", and "the".

I was actually going to use those, but I couldn't use them with out risking copyright enfringement.  Oops!  I used words to write this.  I think I'm in trouble.

I'd lean more towards budget limitiations, and simple expediency.

In Star Wars, unless being an alien was a important point (scary bars, Jawas, cool co-pilot) human was the de facto species just for simplicities sake.

I think that this is exactly it.  The first film was greatly limited in its representation of non-human species because the film makers had to rely on cheap alien designs and off the shelf rubber masks.  The cantina scene got away with a lot by having the creatures in the dark recesses of the set.  Still, Lucas and others were so unsatisfied with the results, they got extra money to build more articulate masks for a few creatures like Greedo.

Empire re-used a lot of non-human costumes fron Star Wars, but it seems that the Empire and the Rebellion against the Empire were really items that primarily concerned humans.  The Empire (I am sure that there is some EU explanation for this) ended up being composed of human participants and the Rebellion consisted of humans who belonged to the Empire but left.  If the Empire was mostly human to begin with, the exodus from and rebellion against would be, at least initially, mostly human as well.  It is not a matter of non-humans not being involved in the Galactic Empire or being affected by its tyrannical grip on the galaxy; but rather an Empire and Rebellion consisting of mostly humans and droids that ended up assimilating other races and species as time went on.

So non-humans really aren't in the movies because 1. until ROTJ, they were just too much of a pain in the butt to make convincingly, and because of this 2. Lucas made the Empire and the Rebellion mostly human entities with a few droids.

1997 Special Edition Musings

I actually enjoyed the SE in the theaters.  I was a bit disappointed that some of the matte lines weren't fixed, etc.  But it was fun.  The best part was going and seeing Star Wars with a gaggle of friends.

Of course, we all viewed the SE's as novelty items that were a fun new take on the movies.  We didn't think the SE's had become the official version.  Now I feel guilty for having the SE's.

Thinking back on it though, the SE's still weren't as fun as seeing them for the first time in the theaters in '77, '80 and '83.

Only Imperial Stormtroopers... etc.

Good point.  Just saw that this morning, I don't know how I forgot.  But, yeah, that's hardly a crux of my argument.

Anyway, there are several questions.  One, could Ben's death have benefitted from more danger?  Two, did the presence of stormtroopers in that situation increase the level of danger?  Three, if so, have stormtroopers (and their counterparts) become exponentially more pathetic as time goes on?  Four, what happened to stealth?  Five, how did the scouts in ROTJ not realize that many of their own men went missing at the same time their speeder bike began to randomly explode in the forest, and did they not manage to put two and two together (maybe slightly justified in that it was a trap all along)?

 1.  I think Ben's death was really more about him being around to help Luke even after he died.  Remember, originally Lucas was only going to have Ben get wounded and realized that Ben would be only standing around the rest of the movie.  So Lucas wrote Ben's death in as filming was getting started, Sir Guiness almost quit production which leads us to this current discussion.  So... I don't know if more danger would have changed the result.

2. Yes.  Stormtroopers where everywhere.  If the rebels split up and were hiding on, oh say, levels five and six, the stormtroopers could report it in.  And if you manage to lower a blast door on them, they still will find a way to make it through.  And they all can't miss. Sooner or later, one of them will hit their targert.

3. I've always wondered if Vader's plan to track the Falcon to the Rebel base included instructions for the Stormtroopers to miss, but at least make the escape look convincing.

4.  The shooting script and the rough cut of Star Wars had Ben sneaking past many more Imperial officers and Stormtroopers.  The Force was with him.

5.  Maybe they Scouts were out looking, but just in the wrong part of the forest.  Hard to answer this question, there isn't enough data.

The very best thing I've heard in a long time that highlights this gap is from "Spaced", a brilliant English comedy starring Simon Pegg of "Shaun of the Dead" fame.   Tim Bisley works in a collectibles shop, and an 8 year old wants to buy a Jar Jar doll.  He explodes:

"You are SO blind!  You so do NOT understand!  You weren't there at the beginning!  You don't know how good it was, how important!  This is it for you!  This jumped-up firework display of a toy advert!  People like you make me sick!  What's wrong with you?!"

 Perfect.

Watching The Birth of a Nation

Those where some different times, indeed.  Hopefully, we've made a bunch of progress since then.

Thanks for the review, Gaffer.  It is a film that I have been curious to see as well.  The message is reprehensible, but I am curious about the cinematography.  I finally saw Metropolis the other day.  It is amazing what someone with a creative mind and a bit of technical daring can put on film.
