“West-Indian accent”? I though Jar Jar was supposed to sound Creole. And previously in this thread his accent was described as resembling Jamaican. This is really why the Jar Jar criticism confuses me so much. People can never agree on how exactly he is offensive. Also this is literally the first time I’ve heard mention of Jar Jar’s “buttocks”, and what does that have to do with Indians?

Also when was “crafty Japanese trade villains” ever a thing? I’ve heard people make ‘yellow peril’ comparisons, but apart from the accent (which the voice actor based on Philippino I belive) there’s not much about them that resembles any Asian cultures. Not that I’m aware of at least.

LoL

Well, sure but the point is that Jar Jar sounds decidedly stereotyped in that fashion. Be it Caribbean or Jamaican they all have a very noticeable trait that is very much human being of color. The trade federation have very obvious, thick Asian accents with large slitted eyes…they walk around like Geishas with their hands folded in front of them. I took the “crafty” in that phrase to just illustrate they were stereotypes that were cast as villains. Nothing more. Yellow peril certainly would fit that stereotype.

Watto and Jewish is ( I hope) not in need of an explanation?

Large slitted eyes…that’s a contradiction in terms if I ever saw one.

Obviously Asian…

The alien on the right is definitely Asian in facial characteristics but that is not the only trait I’m talking about. At any rate it is not important for my basic premise to be true. Many thought similarly, including the persons in the piece I linked. All my friends felt this way at the first viewing. They also bow a lot, mix up their I’s and R’s. Sound familiar? C’mon guys.

Most characters in the prequels bow a lot, including the Jedi and the senators, so the Neimoidians are hardly unique in that aspect (they bow very little, and not very far down, compared to the humans overall). And quickly scanning through their scenes in TPM I couldn’t find a single moment where they mix up their J’s and R’s.

I’m not saying that there’s not vaguely Asian characteristics to the accents. Their tone of voice has similarities to traditional Samurai, or Edo period characters in general. Some of the enunciation are also similar. But to say that they walk like Geishas, have Asian-looking eyes,Asian facial features, that they represent duplicitous yellow peril stereotypes despite their made-up alien look and behavior, is just plain odd to me. If they had long nails and fu-manchu mustaches, then I’d agree that they were blatant stereotypes.

Like I said, there are some Asian similarities, or rather influences when they made the accents, but I have to agree with DreDre that the extent to which people go to compare them to Asians, or specifically Japanese (or in some cases Chinese), seems to be quite a stretch. I have the same problem with how people perceive Jar Jar. He’s become a perceived amalgamation of several contradictory stereotypes; based on very different cultures and accents.

They apparently sport different accents in foreign language dubs of the film.

The critic was checking out Jar Jar’s butt?

And I don’t recall any Gungans throwing spears or rocks at the battle droid army. They aren’t primitive and have technology. Undercuts their arguments when you make up stuff that doesn’t happen in the movie.

Most of Watto’s face is a nose. He’s like ALF’s greedy uncle or something.

clones…versus droids
both expensive to produce, sure
but besides the jedi, there were few actual casualties

Clones don’t count as casualties?

And I’m sure there were civilian deaths as well in a war of that scale.

Lucas would likely never show a hint of it though. We never saw the prison camps or civilian casualties on Naboo that were talked about in TPM. It’s like playing Where’s Waldo just to spot any dead Gungans in the ground battle scenes.

IIRC, Qui-Gon was only going to be heard talking to Yoda, not seen. It’s still unclear to me why Liam never came back to do a voiceover. I doubt that he wasn’t interested, as he did do Qui-Gon for Clone Wars. If he was off working on a film somewhere, they couldn’t arrange a recording session and a satellite hookup? He could have knocked those lines in the ROTS script out in a hour or less.

An apter analogy is Superman using a plane to fly.

I gotta agree here . in my opinion , both Yoda and the Emperor should be above the use of them , my go to fan edits cut these scenes out .

Attack of The Ridiculousness just dubs in Daffy Duck sounds as Yoda whirls about.

There’s nothing in the OT to indicate Yoda was a pacifist. We may not have seen him fight, but in ESB he trained Luke in the art of defense, and in RotJ he specifically told Luke that he must confront Vader in order to become a Jedi (with Obi-Wan basically telling him not long after that he had to kill him).

I don’t have a problem with Lucas modeling prequel Yoda after the martial arts master who plays old and feeble until he’s required to kick ass. The other strong audience reaction I saw was to Yoda Force-pulling his cane and resuming his hobbled stance just before people arrived on the scene.

Interesting. I never thought of it in terms of concealing that he could still kick butt. No secret to fellow Jedi, but to everyone else?

What really bothers me the most about the prequels isn’t the fancy aesthetics, but the fact that the Galaxy appears to be way more advanced technologically 30-20 years before the OT.
Although TPM is visually the most Star Wars-sy looking of the prequels because it was the only one shot on film and used real sets and more practical effects, story-wise TPM is all over the place. AOTC’s only saving grace for me is the lightsaber duel between Yoda and Dooku (yes I enjoy that scene, sue me).
ROTS is most definitely the best of the prequels in terms of overall story and character (I still dislike the whole saving Padmé as Anakin’s reason for turning to the Dark Side), and the I enjoy the most. I also think it’s only one of the prequels that really feeds into the OT plot-wise (if you ignore TPM and AOTC you won’t really miss out on anything).

BTW, porn star Lexi Belle is a huge SW fan and considers AOTC her favourite of the franchise, so make of that what you will.

Holograms, holograms everywhere! About the only time someone in the prequels uses a video screen to communicate is aboard Bail Organa’s ship.

I could have sworn we discussed this several pages back? Contract haggling is nothing new in Hollywood. Maybe they’ll drop the idea of bringing Kirk’s Dad back, which the studio only cares about since Hemsworth is a big star now. Give the time travel shenanigans a rest for once.
Unless Q drops in and gives Kirk a chance to save his father, oh wait, they’ve done that before. 😉

It’s one type of animation pretending to look like another type of animation. Why not just hand draw the darn thing? Guess I’ve seen it used on one too many cheap looking shows.

And it’s not impossible to merge 2D and 3D animation, like hand-drawing characters and CG-ing ships. It’s not ideal, but some shows like Netflix’s Voltron reboot have done a great job with it imo.

Oh, I agree! That looks pretty good! I found it ironic that Titan A.E. caught some flak for doing the same when anime has been blending the two since Lensman in 1984.

I liked that Droids mostly stayed out of the Empire/Rebellion stuff and showed us things like other crime families besides the Hutts. Serialized storylines were rare on Saturday Morning tv at the time. Aside from Boba Fett, no other OT characters ever appeared on the series, IIRC. The Max Rebo band did have a cameo though.
