The Blob!
Time
It looks more like something was spilled on the film more than anything else. If there were any compositing problems in those shots there would be anomalies around the tauntaun or the Rebel transport, as everything else in the shot is "real". And I think we're all familar with what garbage mattes look like by now.
Given the number of bugs that crept in when the video masters for the DC boxset were made, I can believe somebody was drinking in the telecine room and had a little accident!

The Artistic Vision (TM Luca$hFilm)
Time
I've been watching the animated Flash Gordon series from 1979 on DVD, and in the commentary they mention having the movie rights, which they sold to Dino DeLaurentis to fund the tv version. (Filmation was initially going to make a live action Flash tv-movie, but the script became too expensive to shoot that way.) Which means either Filmation was in the right place and right time or King Features was more interested in having something done with Flash post Star Wars...
In the making of book for the first Star Trek movie, Lucas was one of many people considered for the director's chair. This was slightly before SW was out, (still referred to as "The Star Wars" in a Paramount memo) and the book doesn't elaborate if Roddenberry and Co. actually talked with him.

Star Trek gets better treatment than Star Wars...

Wait and see is probably a good idea at this point. I'm not crazy about them messing with the classic opening theme music though. And if the original untouched episodes are never released on future formats, that's just as bad as leaving the original cut of the first Trek movie behind to gather dust on Laserdisc and videotapes. And the effects in the so-called "Director's Edition" apparently were not done to HD resolutions, so they'll have to redo that one too!

Redoing the 60's FX work, (some of which did win an emmy or two) has been very controversial in fan circles ever since some now defunct CGI fx house proposed it to Paramount almost a decade ago. They redid a couple scenes from "The Doomsday Machine" episode as a proof of concept. A bit creaky by today's standard, but the idea never totally went away. And of course, fan films like "Starship Exeter" have great effects shots now. (Paramount ought to hire those guys!)
It will be a miracle if every film and sound element from TNG, DS9, and Voyager was saved over the years.
