The Criterion Collection Thread
Time

You should have seen the Criterion Laserdisc prices back in the day. At least there were usually some bonus features and a widescreen transfer when studios by themselves were less willing to do so.

Criterion also would do films unjustly neglected on home video. My childhood fave Robinson Crusoe On Mars had never even seen a VHS or Beta release when Criterion released a lovely gatefold set in the early 90’s. Just watched the Blu-Ray version last week. The only Criterion Blu I have so far.

If you want SPFX done, and it is on 16mm let me know as I will do it at the same time.

PayPal is fine, but for small donations apparently they are taking like a $5 fee,so drop me a PM and I can send bank details, it stops the donations being eaten up by fees. The paypal info is in my signature if you prefer.

I will be restoring all of these fully to BD level quality, and it will be done fairly quickly, before the end of the year if I can get some money together for storage and physical cleaning.

None of these documentaries are currently available in a high quality format, nearly all the versions released, even those on the Blu-ray box-set are from worn out, NTSC SD tapes.

This will be the only way I think that they will be ever been seen in good quality, and with the full colour information present.
Thanks to everyone that is interested in making this happen. I’m excited to see them myself!

It is indeed 16mm. 😃

General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread

I think it’s part of the plan, such as it is. All anybody monitoring would see (if they were paying attention) is Chewie breaking loose. Then Han gets on the intercom to further delay anybody coming up to investigate. Some of those greeblies being shot at on the walls always struck me as wall lasers or possibly tear gas vents some kind.

It seems to have a moveable central eye.

Even if Han having served in the Empire isn’t in the back of George’s mind at that point, Solo would know what to take out first in attempting a jailbreak.

The comic book clearly explains they’re pretending to shoot at Chewie while blowing up the cameras and such.

My old pal Jaxxon has a print of SPFX. Not sure what the condition of it is at the moment. Also one and a half prints of MOSW, but Poita probably has the better copy.

SPFX has a unique issue in that two Disney clips were cut after it was broadcast. (Oh the irony!) The uncut version was never released on home video, and even the print Jax has is missing them. It may be possible to restore those clips from Mary Poppins and The Black Hole using other sources, (Jax has a 16mm Black Hole print) and Mark Hamill’s missing narration from one of the off air recordings floating around.

Return of the Jedi - your opinion?

Me and my friends were all 11 - 12 when the 1st one came out and we did all sorts of 1970’a - `1980’s nerdy things like taking cassette players into the theater and taping the movies, having nerdy schoolyard conversations that had sentences like “what if George Lucas dies in a plane crash before he finishes the sequel?” and then after TESB we had that same conversation again.

I saw RotJ with my dad on opening weekend. I had gotten enough info about the movie before it came out that I knew what to expect from the story line. My dad and I went to these like other fathers and sons go to ball games.
When I left the theater all I could think was “I waited six years for that?”

There’s a fine movie in there lost amid a horrible execution. I saw this one several times in the theaters and it’s got moments but not enough to bring it to the level that it needs to be at. The whole affair felt recycled and phoned in.

I’ve read a fair amount of threads here about RotJ edits and peoples feeling about them and I do wonder how many people here have read Rinzlers’ book on it. I realize it’s Lucasfilm sanctioned and people may be wary of historical revisionism but there’s a lot in that book where things are detailed about the people on the movie being aghast at what is going on. Ralph McQuarrie does pre-production art but refuses to draw teddy bears, for one thing and they very clearly spell out that Lucas had a kid and he wanted to be able to take that kid into a toy store and buy a Star Wars teddy bear. There are parts of the constitution of this movie where the quality control was thrown under the bus to make a real kids movie and that’s the big thing that haunts it. There’s the whole dark will he or won’t he patricide thing that’s playing off against burp jokes and killer (BUT CUTE) teddy bears. It’s a movie that can’t make up it’s mind as to what it wants to be - at least The Phantom Menace is consistent in that regard.

You wouldn’t still have any of those recordings? Did you tape any other movies?
