On a side note, has anyone had any signs of disc rot with your Criterion DVD’s? I have one that is very discolored at this point, but plays with no issues. Not sure if it’s dual layer or not.
Can the movies have unreliable narrators? Lucas has always said that R2 and 3PO are telling the story.

The deleted 2001 footage is in the salt mine vault. No plans on letting anybody see it. If they don’t do it for the 50th, they may never do it in our lifetime.
The Shining is more murky. Kubrick’s personal assistant claims to have burned all the outtakes and such per Kubrick’s wishes. It’s possible the footage cut from one of the L.A. or New York area opening weekend prints survives, but who really knows? Only the editor dispatched to cut NY area prints has ever been interviewed. Nobody seems to know who cut the L.A. prints.

Shining superfan Lee Unkrich did discover 35mm frames of the ending and other footage in the Kubrick Archives. I presume these will appear in the book he’s writing about the movie.

It all boils down to whether the new extras interest you. I wish I had the first pressing of the Laserdisc that was recalled, because it had some early draft script pages Kubrick apparently didn’t want anyone to see!
Barnes & Noble has a Criterion sale every so often.
The one near us allows members to check out up to two movies at a time, and they have a huge selection from across space and time. It’s like having DVD rental from Netflix again, but free. It’s wonderful.
Just some random observations from the movies:
-Logray is clearly strong with the Force, raising some interesting implications with the Ewok’s effectiveness against the Empire.
-The beasts crashing through the forest is a trial run for a certain scene in TPM.
-Wilford Brimley says ‘power oscillator’ at some point, which I like to think inspired ‘thermal oscillator’ in TFA.
-George is already obsessed with the final scene of ET based on how he handles the spaceship launch.
-Every character in these movies is more compelling than any character in the prequels.

The first scripts I ever wrote were for a blatant Friday the 13th ripoff featuring a hockey masked Jason knockoff and an Evil Dead sequel which that was an uninspired Evil Dead II rehash. I like to think I’ve improved as a writer since then.
I think everybody starts out imitating/emulating something they like.

Do you ever show your scripts to anyone? You can’t create in a vacuum. I personally find bad movies educational in that they instruct on what not to do.
From your description, Ted The Caver could be the next Manos: The Hands of Fate, or The Room. A cinematic trainwreck one can’t look away from.
