Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)
Time

I didn't realize you meant a leica of the Boba cartoon existed. Was this on the official site? And did someone preserve it?

As it was part of the HS, I would presume CBS got it on tape. There is no reason they would have had to telecine it themselves.

The R&R DVD didn't mention the specific loss of anything else. Studios don't seem to like to talk about such things in detail, if the Universal backlot fire a couple years back is any example.

I didn't know where to ask but I'm looking forward for the Latin Spanish audios of the 6 movies on Blu-rays to make some high quality edits for some fandubs, do someone know where I can find those?

Can some good guy could rip them? =P

This isn't really the place to ask for such things. Especially for rips of a brand new retail release.

OT Deleted Scenes Discussion

Man, watching the cartoon you'd never thing Mark Hamill would end up to be such a great voice actor. More importantly, I'm glad they removed the blow-up-Endor subplot, mainly because it mirrors Star Wars even more than having a second Death Star does. It make it just a little too obvious.

Also the problems with the Luke-Leia scene in ESB lie in the fact that it mentions the Wampa attacks on the base. For those to work entirely it would require serious editing of some sort, though I must say I did like the dynamic between Hamill and Fisher in that scene.

Mark was doing voice over work years before Star Wars even. He even had a small part in Ralph Bakshi's "Wizards", which might have had a longer run in the summer of '77, had a certain space epic not caught on. ;)

Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions
Time

It means they couldn't find the original film segment, or didn't want to pay to remaster it. When Vader speaks in the Holiday Special version, it cuts to the video screen Chewie's son is watching the cartoon on right before a commercial break.

EDIT: My "phantom memory" recalled Vader having lines before the commercial break. I checked against a copy of the HS, and it's clearly not the case. Sorry about that!

I still think this looks like it was pulled off of an analog broadcast tape though. The "countdowns" at the beginning and end as seen in the HS aren't there.

Carrie Fisher's "Wishful Drinking" on DVD
Time

I think that article might have misquoted her a tad. Carrie got a percentage of the OT profits, as did Mark and Harrison. She may not get a merchandising cut though.

In the show, the ultimate item of Leia merchandise is a punchline. As someone in Japan is no doubt building a Slave Leia android, it's got to be a little weird for her!

The sound issues are legitimate technical things. Sometimes scenes are filmed without sound. Sometimes, parts of the soundtrack are damaged and have to be cut out. Sometimes parts of the soundtrack go missing after so many decades. And other times, during the rough cutting, editors will cut and splice unwanted segments out or leave silent certain sections that will require careful sound design later.

Indeed. On the subject of the sound, it has always surprised me that people were complaining about the sudden shifts in sound quality in ANH. Especially during Tarkin threatening Leia. Some of these lines have always sounded awful for some reason. Bad ADR, I guess. So ANH is definitely all over the place when it comes to the sound.

Luke's "It just isn't fair. Biggs is right, I'm never gonna get out of here" has always bugged me - that one sounds like it was recorded in a tin can.

Prior to the 2004 DVD, Tarkin's line never sounded like the tape got chewed up though.

Given the frenetic pace of post production in 1977, it wouldn't surprise me if someone was recorded over a phone line. ;)

Carrie Fisher's "Wishful Drinking" on DVD
Time

Watched this tonight, and it's pretty darn funny. Worth it for the Star Wars monologue alone. In light of recent events, the stuff about George was cathartic in a twisted way.

There are several Star Wars clips to be seen, and not an SE shot in sight! Can't recall where that footage of Harrison and Carrie cracking up on location shooting the Endor bunker scene came from though. (Empire of Dreams?)

BTW, there's an insert in the DVD case teasing Carrie's next book, which promises more inside SW dirt. ;)

Man, TIE Fighter, was a great fucking game!

True dat.

Does Darth Vader eat or drink?

Is there anything in the EU or elsewhere that covers how Vader gets his daily nutrition?

All I can think of is the old Marvel comic, where he uses the Force to make a coffee cup float to him.

Man, I thought everyone knew this!

Those two little tubes you see poking out of the mask towards Sebastian Shaw's mouth in ROTJ are feed tubes for liquid nutrition and water. I first saw this in one of those big white books like the cross section ones, only it had pictures of props with in-universe labeling in it.

From Wookieepedia: "Vader could take food through his mouth, but only when he was inside a hyperbaric chamber, since he had to remove his triangular respiratory vent. It was therefore easier for Vader to receive nourishment through liquids, intravenous and otherwise, and to rely on catheters, collection pouches, and recyclers to deal with liquid and solid waste.[17] Though liquids were preferable, he still had the capacity to chew if he wished,[26] though a nutrient feed provided Vader with all the nourishment he required.[6]"

Sometimes, it's better not to know how the dark lord of the Sith goes to the bathroom...

I watched Chris Gore's review on Attack Of The Show.

He said George Lucas is "FAN FRIENDLY"!! 8-O Apparently, because he "encourages fan-edits" etc. I can't find a video of the review to post, but if anyone can find it, it's a HOWLER!

^^My cat can't stop laughing, in fact! :-D

And that is supposed to justify stiffing out on the originals? o_O

Worst Dialogue from............................The Phantom Menace!
Time

You mean Watto. ;)

It probably wasn't so bad to work for him, except for the whole being a slave who would explode if you try to run away angle.

As Watto was trying to get Anakin to essentially beat up some people who owed him money in Episode II, he had every right to blow him off. Plus he sold his mom off to some crazy moisture farmer!

In a way, Watto is the cause of Anakin's fall more than Palpatine.

And now I'm defending a prequel plot point. Just shoot me now! ;)
