"The Ewoks Project - Animated TV Series" DVD set (now on myspleen) (Released)

Is this broadcast recording different from the official LD / VHS ?

I had one big "problem" with these sets, I plan to "release" them as 2 5-DVD sets, but you can't buy cases for 5 DVDs, only for 6 :-) So original / alternate  versions of these 2 movies would be the perfect DVD 6 for every set :-)

Been a while since I've watched either version, but the one visual difference is the closing credits. Broadcast version credits run over a freeze frame of the Endor sky, LD/MGM home video release is over a black screen.

Wish I still had a copy of this. Would make for a great cover?

That would make a great cover. If a high res can't be found, it wouldn't be too hard to replicate.

Need a preservation to wrap it around first though :)

I sent the owner of that magazine a letter asking him if he'd consider giving us a high-res scan to use as a DVD case insert.  I'll let you guys know if and how he responds.

Ask them about the January '83 issue if you get a reply. I used to have that one too, and the Star Wars graphic for the "coming next month" ad on the back cover is pretty neat.

There's a facebook page mentioned on the Youtube video as well.

I have both movies on Laserdisc, plus my own VHS recording of Battle for Endor from the original broadcast. The VHS I transferred to DVD quite some time ago. IIRC, someone around here documented some slight dialog differences between the tv broadcast and the early video release of BFE a long time back.

I *might* have an old toy magazine article with pics of the Ewoks and Droids lines, but it will take some time to actually find it if it's not gone for good.

A quick bit of Google fu did find this...

OFFICIAL: Library of Congress had original prints replaced with 1997 SE
Time

Since what's been done to THX-1138, I wonder how any future historians are going to sort it all out. We are on the third version of the SE's and now the second iteration of the prequels.

And if anyone who knows copyright law could chime in, how do the 2004 and 2011 changes not require an updated copyright? Besides the fact whoever did the new shots don't get any onscreen credits, there are credits for people whose contributions have been "deleted". (Clive Revill in Empire, and now the assistant Yoda puppeteers in Phantom Menace.) A new credit roll ought to be the easiest thing to change, and they don't do this.

IMO, the one overriding reason that the set can be "worth it" is for the 3 old-school documentaries on Disc 9.  The prices on the secondary market for legit versions of "The Making of Star Wars", "SP FX: The Empire Strikes Back", and especially for the Japan-only "Classic Creatures" LD together rival the cost of the BD set.

Yes, I know that almost everyone on this site has at least on LD-to-DVD transferred version of each of the documentaries (Rowman's for me) but to have a proper release is nice in itself.

How are they encoded? AVC? How high is the bitrate?

Not sure how they are encoded on the BD since i don't have it.  I do know they are from the digital video masters from the 90's, probably the self same as those used on the japan laserdiscs without the burned in subtitles of course.

These are not proper releases because not only did Lucas not go back to the negatives, he did not scan 16mm LPP prints either.  Dump to disc just like the gout.

Silverwook i read about Luca$h adding fake grain to the blu ray but i thought it was another internet myth, sigh.

It's MPEG2 encoding for the old docs. I've only watched MOSW all the way through. It's obviously an old video master, (with the 90's Fox logo at the end) but more watchable than my rotted Laserdisc at this point. Thankfully, William Conrad's narration is there.

SPFX and Classic Creatures seem to have more grain or video noise than MOSW does. Still need to dig out my LD's for a real comparison.

Where they got the different video master for Classic Creatures is anyone's guess.

Don't forget Lucas is always mining ancient mythology. Young heroes falling for slightly older women is nothing new.

He should have mined the Oedipus myth, though. It would have been juicier for Anakin to have boinked his mother.

Ewww! And I thought it was bad that perhaps Palpatine knocked her up, and erased her memory. Virgin birth my ass!

Fourteen, dude. "Do you see him hitting on the queen, though he's just nine and she's fourteen? Yeah, he's probably gonna marry her someday..."

I was listening through crappy little laptop speakers at the time. Thanks for the correction. ;)

Ten year olds are capable of thinking of girls as not being icky. I thought Lynda Carter was some sort of goddess when I was ten. And she still is. ;)

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

I didn't have a chance to open the package up until today. It's definitely a newspaper supplement, the pages aren't stapled, so that will make things a little easier!

There are more handwritten notes on the actual article I hope survive the scanning process, they are a little faded with age. There is also a bonus photo on another page of some extras showing off their fresh shaved heads.

The pages are slightly too wide for my old flatbed scanner, so I will have to scan in segments. Does it matter where I make the "break" vertically or horizontally?

Info: Original Trilogy on CED preservations? (3 OT CED released projects in here)
Time

The white and blue caddies were sometimes mixed up in the waning years of the format. RCA kept releasing new titles for a few years after they ceased production on the players, so it's possible they were simply using what caddies were left in stock regardless of the film label they glued on.

I've seen discs with blue outer shells and white inner sleeves and vice versa.

All mono CED releases of stereo films are clearly marked as such on the back label. "Mono sound for videodisc." Early players and titles were all mono, one thing that gave Laserdisc an early advantage.

The OT  CED releases were all stereo.
