HBO Star Wars preservations (a Work In Progress)
Time

Looked over the '82 rental version and a later early Beta HiFi release, (pre '85) and they are different from the HBO version. No squeezed macrobinocular shots, and much different pan and scan in many shots. Just how many fullscreen transfers were there? I'm going to have to dust off my ancient LD version at this rate.

I contacted the guy who sold me my "new" beta, and apparently linear audio reproduction can vary quite a bit over all the models Sony made. So I may have to capture everything twice.

I might also try recording audio from the headphone jack, which is something I did once or twice back in college. Although I can't recall exactly why I needed to do it at the time. ;)

Depending on the cable company involved it could be very nice for analog tv, or incredibly crappy. (Even better if you had one of those big dishes in your backyard!) I saw and recorded things at both ends of the scale back then.

The family didn't get a VCR until well after the big fuss over Star Wars on tv though.

Going to capture the old '82 rental Beta while I'm at it. The time compressed LD would look way too good for this. ;)

My SW Locations Book is coming Dec 1 - Please check it out!
Time

Welcome aboard, ARParr. Don't mind the grumpy people. So long as you're not a bot trying to sell us enlargement pills. We've been getting a lot of those around here lately. ;)

Will your book be available in places like Barnes and Noble?

As for the Blu Rays, if you're only after certain things like the bonus discs, Ebay is the way to go.

The HBO is time compressed, it runs slightly less than two hours even accounting for the missing Fox Fanfare on the recording. Not as sped up as a PAL video would be. This can be slowed down if need be?

Upon closer examination, the second more problematic tape is not time compressed. I'm leaning towards the idea it's a bootleg of a pre 1985 video release. Might be the 1982 "for rental only" which I have in my collection, and would be a better source for the vintage look, or to patch the HBO recording?

I'm doing one off the older beta just for the audio right now. Only way to be sure if the other one has muffled linear playback.

BTW, the date of the HBO recording is 2-19-83. Written right on the label. :)

This tape starts right on the "Galaxy Far Far Away" frame, but is complete to the end. The other tape has noticeably worse tracking on both machines, but starts in mid Fox Fanfare. No indication of what cable channel it was recorded from, as it cuts off soon as the credits finish.

The "new" beta is being a real pain in the ass. It doesn't like anything aside from the demo recording that came with it. (Linear audio sounds muffled as well.) Fiddling with the tracking isn't helping enough, so I'm going to hook up the other deck and try that again.

This is really frustrating.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate videotape? ;)

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)

In the Netherlands there's a company that scans 16mm film to HD (1400x1040). I don't think they care what kind of material it is. It's 2,50 euro per minute. So for under 1000 euros you can have the OOT scanned. So whoever owns these 16mm films, maybe it's a nice idea.

The shipping would cost an arm and a leg though. (16mm film reels are bulky to begin with.) It cost me over sixty bucks just to send some DVD captures to Sweden!

Most film collectors would probably be a nervous wreck sending their prints off to another country to be handled by unknown individuals.

Feeling very down about the current state of Star Wars
Time

With all the crap that swirls around a position literally no other filmmaker has ever taken, it's easy to get worn out and feel down. Was that one big happy fandom I glimpsed back in 1987 at the 10th anniversary con ever real at all?

But when I think about the projects that have come out thanks to the hard work of many members here, and the projects waiting in the wings, that usually cheers me up.

Welcome aboard, TKF821! It's great to see that HBO guide again. I foolishly sold my personal copy with most of my SW collection in the 90's. Do you have the previous month's edition with Star Wars on the back cover?

And if your Super 8's  are what I think they are, I may faint!

Just to update everyone, I lucked out in being able to buy a fully refurbished Sony Betamax to replace my existing creaky machine. (At a reasonable price too.) I should have it by the end of the week. :)

Probably not the best idea as LFL may just confiscate it. Also, didn't Lucas flat out refuse Robert Harris when he wanted to restore an original version for absolutely free?

IIRC, it's more like Lucasfilm hasn't even acknowledged the offer. Been a while since I've read the thread over at the HTF that mentioned it though.

And remember everyone, if you can't say something nice about someone's project, don't go stinking up the thread. Nobody is forcing you to be here. ;)
