Today was 33rd Anniversary of Holiday Special
Time

Ah, Itchy and his virtual reality porn hairdryer set. Some techno geek was no doubt inspired by that scene!

Compared to other holiday variety specials of the era, it's actually pretty typical of the genre. Check out The Paul Lynde Halloween Special sometime. It came out on DVD a few years back.

I long for the day a photo of Lucas visiting the set surfaces. ;)

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I have doubts Congress is going to cater to the specific needs of one eccentric film director.

In the 1920's, the Bram Stoker estate won the right in court to have every single copy of Nosferatu destroyed, yet it has survived to this day.

Lucas can't get his mitts on every print of the OT any more than he can make all those copies of the Holiday Special go away. He sure as hell can't touch the complete Super 8 prints that were legally made and sold.

Most 35mm film collectors do not advertise what they have to begin with. It's a very secretive closed circle that isn't open to outsiders.

I want my kids to see the unaltered Original Trilogy in a real theater
Time

Older movies shot at a lower frame rate do look like they were shot on video when those sports/game modes are engaged though. Some people may think it's cool, but it's not what most movies are supposed to look like.

Many HD sets have the thing on by default out of the box, and the off switch is usually buried deep in a sub menu. Check out most home theater setups at stores like Best Buy and the "soap opera" effect will be noticeable.
