Episode II: Attack of the Ridiculousness ***NEW 14 MONTH ANNIVERSARY DVD NOW AVAILABLE***
Time

The more goofy transitions the better. They remind me of how many magazine shows went nuts with those effects, when they became available and affordable in the late 80's.

The one I especially loathed at the time folded the image into a paper airplane, which then flew off the screen. It would be laughably dated now.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail -- 1975 theatrical (on hiatus - lots of info)

Sounds good for the source material if a bit soft. Dynamic Range of 11 (out of 20, I'm obsessed with this meter), but why is it PCM at 1536 kbp/s instead of 1441?

My DVD recorder does not have a optical input, so I have to use the analog audio connections. I'm pretty sure DVD audio extractor isn't doing anything funny with it.

Whether he intended it or not, it was still basically the same plot, just done better.  Hell, the V'Ger plot was once going to be used as the pilot for Star Trek: Phase II, if I recall correctly.

EDIT:  What freaked me out about that episode was what happened with Uhura.  The damn thing wiped her entire brain... yet they're able to re-educate her?!  Were they able to re-educate all her memories and feelings and instincts?  Or is the Uhura we see from that point on basically a whole new person?

There were a lot of ideas tossed around on TMP's strange journey between tv and feature film. There was a false god for an antagonist at one point, who actually makes the crew younger as a gift. (A prototype "Q" perhaps?) How they were going to make Shatner and company look like they did in 1966 I have no idea.

The "explanation" the ST Compendium offered was that only Uhura's factual memories were affected. Maybe Uhura had amnesia of the Jason Bourne variety? ;)

It's one of those things like the beaming people into their past selves solution in "Tomorrow is Yesterday". It's best not trying to find a logical explanation for how it works.

Robot nudity is only funny when Futurama does it. ;)

It was ridiculous for Threepio to be working down on the moisture farm with all his circuitry exposed anyway.

Had another warped idea last night. Every time a limb gets lopped off, we hear Lucas' disturbing laughter faintly in the background. Or maybe a "severed limb-o-meter"?

Eh, for my money, I'd go with "The Changeling."  Same story clocking in at half the time, and at least the characters have something to do besides look at things, although that bit with Uhura is damn silly...

That episode was pretty traumatic for me first time I saw it as a kid. OMG! That thing killed Scotty! ;)

People presume TMP was rehashing The Changeling, but the concept of V'Ger came from an unfilmed script written for Roddenberry's "Genesis II" series. That show never made it past the pilot.

Preserving DTS LaserDisc tracks, specifically Jurassic Park
Time

Seriously? The Star Wars SE DTS theatrical discs have been discussed around here for several years, and it always hit a dead end because there was no way to do anything with the copies in private hands. This is big news if you've cracked that technical nut.

I would like to know if DTS Laserdisc tracks can be properly extracted though. The current Blu Ray of Mortal Kombat sounds weak compared to the LD.

Gene wasn't in the best position following TMP's less than positive reception. If I recall my old Starlog articles correctly, he was asked to vacate his offices on the Paramount lot at one point. TNG was still several years in the future.

One interview he gave with Starlog in the years between TMP and TNG mentioned a pretty awful script idea, with Spock having to kill Kennedy to preserve the timeline. I'd like to think he was pulling the fandom's collective leg, but you never know.

Gene's "tenets" applied to the 24th century. I don't think it was ever a denial of way things were in the TOS era. Having a Klingon on the bridge was his idea too?

For better or worse, Rick Berman was hired by Roddenberry.
