Lucas specifically mentioned having written treatments for nine films in interviews given for the original making of ESB book.

I'm sure he did, but the man has changed his story so many times before and after that his credibility is questionable. I mean, look, I'm sure zombie pressed his case kind of hard, but it was still a compelling case. Or do you have an issue with his book/arguments?

I think the George Lucas of 1979/80 was a bit more unfiltered and less guarded than he is now. The whole book is an largely unvarnished look at ESB's production and where Lucas thought the saga was going. Even Carrie Fisher's drug problems are hinted at. For those reasons, I think it will remain forever out of print.

The only point I wanted to make is that Lucas isn't suddenly pulling a sequel out of his thermal exhaust port. There's a lot a material that has never seen the light of day.

I haven't read Zombie's book.

According to the Associated Press,

The seventh movie, with a working title of "Episode 7," is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The trilogy will continue the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond "Return of the Jedi".

I have no idea how they would pull that off. I can't imagine Harrison Ford wanting anything to do with Star Wars again. His career has done just fine without it and he's past all that now. Mark Hamil, maybe, he has appeared in many chessy sci-fi films over the years, so he may be interested if the script seems interesting enough to him and the timing is right. Carrie Fisher, I can't imagine her coming back for more. The thing is - how shall I put this gracefully - they have all aged.

What if they tried to pull it off as an animated film, like Polar Express or Final Fantasy:Spirits Within? Use the likeness of the main characters (with their permission of course) and have the film near photo-realistic. They could maybe convince them to provide the voices that way. That would also allow them to offer visuals that are boundless. Of course after Mars Needs Moms flopping, I'm not sure if Disney would want to do a motion-capture Star Wars, even though it wasn't the animators' faults.

Obviously though they are planning on a live-action film. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to accept anybody else playing Luke, Han and Leia.

I think in a few more years, the head CGI used on Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy will be seamless. We'll probably be inundated with movies starring dead actors though. And "live" Elvis concerts.

IMO, we don't owe our continued existence solely to George Lucas' magnanimity. We owe it to the fact that we're small fish in a big pond. I don't think Disney's lawyers are going to care about us any more than Lucasfilm's lawyers (who I'm sure will still be in place under Disney ownership).

If someone wanted to to shut us down, they'd have done it a long time ago. I'm not losing any sleep over this.

Disney shut down a series of day care centers for daring to have images of Mickey and Donald in them.

If it's the one I recall hearing about back in the 90's, Warner Bros. happily supplied them with Looney Tunes characters to put on the walls.

Seriously, why don't they go after the creepy ice cream trucks in my town that have badly drawn copyrighted characters painted on them? I half expect to see Freddy Krueger driving!

Knowing how Hamill feels about what's been done to Star Wars already, I have a feeling he's gonna say no.

And Harrison Ford as old Han Solo would be as depressing as Harrison Ford as old Indy.

How does Mark feel about it? Last time I saw him on tv, he didn't have anything negative to say.

There's also a old saying about "Money talks..."

Unless they set the sequels centuries after ROTJ, you'd expect to see Artoo and Threepio at the very least. Lucas always said they were intended to be the characters that appear in the entire saga.

Mark Hamill taking the up Obi Wan mantle and passing the torch to a new Jedi will get us old coots to buy a ticket. ;)

Right now my biggest concern is the fate of Dark Horse' Star Wars license. What with Disney owning Marvel it would be a tragedy if they were cut out. The Dark Horse team has consistently been releasing the best Star Wars content for years now.

Dark Horse has published Disney titles in the past, and issued some high end collector's merchandise, (statues of characters from the classic Scrooge McDuck comics) so I can't imagine why they would want to shake things up there.

New update via Digital Bits:

UPDATE – 3 PM: Here are new and updated details on this deal from the official Disney investors’ conference call this afternoon:

  • Deal signed and announced earlier today – includes Star Wars franchise and all Lucasfilm operating businesses.
  • Indiana Jones franchise rights ARE also included in this deal.
  • First project under the joint under Disney/Lucas partnership will be Star Wars: Episode 7 in 2015, followed by Episode 8 and Episode 9.
  • Disney purchased “extensive and detailed” treatment for at least Episode 7 (and possibly Episodes 8 and 9 as well) as part of this deal which they “feel very good about.”
  • Disney long term plan is to release a new live-action Star Wars film every 2-3 years – films may eventually explore entire 20,000 year time-span of the franchise.
  • Lucas will serve as creative consultant on new Star Wars films. Kathleen Kennedy will executive produce.
  • Kennedy will serve as Lucasfilm president, reporting to Bob Iger at Disney.
  • Disney plans to expand Star Wars brand into many new product categories and internationally.
  • Star Wars brand will also be expanded into Disney parks, games and TV businesses.
  • Deal was 50% cash and 50% stock – $4.05 billion
  • Disney believes Lucasfilm value is comparable to value of Marvel, but valuation is only based on Star Wars alone – other Lucasfilm intellectual properties are in addition to this.

Whew! Stay tuned…

Dear god. And the fact that there was an actual EP. VII treatment included says volumes.

Star Wars on the goddamn Disney Channel. Can my day get any worse???

Better than Spike Tv. ;)

This seems to explain why the films have been running on Monday nights recently. Spike won't have the rights much longer?

That's the title Gene Roddenberry had on all the Star Trek films made after TMP.

With all due respect I'd but Roddenberry in a higher tier than Lucas for idea conception, development, and realization. ;)

I don't think George Lucas has proven himself to be as competent in those regards, despite mass opinion, but I digress.

I wasn't attempting to equate Gene and George, merely stating there is a precedent for a creator to step back while someone else takes the controls. The amount of input Gene actually had on the later Trek sequels has been debated in fan circles.

all these year Lucas has said there was no 789.  It just came out of his own month that he did.  What a lie!

He did say there were going to be nine movies in the original making of ESB book. Why he claimed he was misquoted, or that the written treatments never existed in the intervening decades is anyone's guess.

2015 is right around the corner.  There must be some kind of script already?  Also does this mean that the original trilogy will receive some kind of justice in a return to home video releases?

George suddenly remembered he actually did write those outlines for Episodes 6, 7, 8. Or else they've been stuck behind a drawer in his desk since 1980. ;)

it's not that hard for episode 6, since that already came out.

maybe you're thinking about  (7,8,) and 9.

I have a migraine today, no doubt caused by this massive disturbance in the Force. ;)

Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become its president and report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Lucas will be creative consultant on new "Star Wars" films.

Lucas said in a statement, "It's now time for me to pass 'Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers."

LOL. Creative consultant.

That's the title Gene Roddenberry had on all the Star Trek films made after TMP.
