There's another Fast & the Furious sequel coming out. Who the hell keeps watching these horrible movies? And can we ship them off to Siberia or something? That used to work for lefties.

Perhaps they are big hits in Siberia? I've had similar thoughts about the never ending Scary Movie sequels. They must be making money somewhere, or else it's a big tax write off.

All Things Star Trek
Time

I'm old enough to recall when Data was considered an android Spock by some.

Actually, the "Temporal Cold War" figured into much of the first two seasons. (We never did find out the identity of "Future Guy", the mysterious figure ordering the Suliban around.) Earth wasn't attacked by the Xindi until the end of Season 2, and Season 3 was almost entirely "We gotta' save the Earth."

Over the course of Season 3 it was revealed the Xindi were misled into attacking Earth by another faction in the TCW. I enjoyed the cliffhanger nature of Season Three, and even when they got dragged back into the TCW at season's end again, with World War II being altered by evil aliens helping Germany. Everything's better with Space Nazis. ;)

It wasn't out of character for Trek to comment on real world events. TOS addressed Vietnam and race relations back in the day. Even the Klingons were once considered an analogy to the Russians. A lot of storylines on DS9 are actually more topical today than when the series originally aired. I'm not sure you could even do a character like Major Kira today.

Berman and company tried to escape the brand name for a while. Star Trek wasn't even part of the show's title early on. Probably a mistake in retrospect.

There was a gap of mere months between the end of Voyager and the premiere of Enterprise. (Voyager actually shot an episode on some shiny new sets built for Enterprise.) Nemesis was also in the pipeline. Maybe there was too much Trek product at the time? It might have been better had the franchise taken a little vacation for a year or two. Disney ought to take heed as they prepare to saturate us with Star Wars.

Enterprise being on a fifth rate network that didn't even air in several key markets didn't help. (They had also lost some affiliates toward the end of Voyager's run.) And the Nielsen ratings didn't factor in how many people were downloading the show, since they couldn't see it where they lived. UPN fell apart not long after cancelling the show. Arguably, more people have seen reruns on Sci Fi than when it first aired.

That theme song didn't help much either. ;)

Problem is, some people will think you're talking about the Green Lantern villain Sinestro.  ;)

I vaguely recall a classmate in the first or second grade being forced to go righty. It's sad such mindless conformist idiocy was still being practiced into the early '70's.

I was a bit ambidextrous before the hand police caught up with me. I still favor the left hand on some tasks, but can't write with it.

Ray Harryhausen has passed away
Time

He was still reluctant to divulge such secrets even when asked on those Blu Ray commentaries. The old Criterion LD of Jason and the Argonauts did go into how a sword held by an actor seamlessly blends into the one thrust into the Hydra's neck.

I sincerely hope the studios release the rest of his films on Blu Ray. I haven't seen Valley of Gwangi or Beast from 20,000 Fathoms in a long time.

TCM ought to do a tribute. They premiered the fairytale short The Tortoise and the Hare, which Ray had abandoned when his Hollywood career took off. It was completed by some fellow animators and fans 50 years later!

What is/was the best SW Game ever, on any platform?
Time

I had so much fun with the mods and cheat codes for JK II. There was one that turned all the bad guys, (or good guys) into Jar Jar. That plus unlocking realistic saber combat got a lot of stress out of my system. ;)

When I was having a bad day, I would embrace the dark side. I would fill that stardestroyer hangar level full of bad guys, then vent them into space.

Well, to CBS' credit, there were mindful of the fans who wanted the original effects intact on the Blu Rays.
That's what I was sure to thank him for. We're going to try to have him back so I can gush while we're recording.

Cool! Does he have any involvement in the current TNG HD remastering? I saw The Best of Both Worlds on the big screen a couple weeks back, and the efforts to use as much of the original model footage as possible is certainly paying off.

Ray Harryhausen has passed away

I agree.

Here's what I posted in the other thread...

Ray was one of my personal heroes. (And I don't use that term lightly.) As a kid, I would often run to the tv to catch one of his movies in those pre video days. He was the first behind the scenes guy whose name I learned, and associated with what I saw on the screen.

I came perilously close to breaking my parent's VCR watching the Jason and the Argonauts skeleton battle frame by frame. Thank goodness for Laserdiscs!

There are so many of those ILM guys who were inspired by him to get into the industry. (And countless others.) When they made the leap to digital dinos for Jurassic Park, Ray was one of the first people they showed the footage to.

I just bought his early films on Blu Ray in a box set at Costco last month. On the commentary track for Twenty Million Miles To Earth, Ray sounded like a little kid, relishing the Ymir's final battle in Rome. He was truly young at heart.

I feel very fortunate I got his autograph at a comic show in the early 90's. I was walking on air the rest of that day.

This one is going to hurt for a little while. :(

"Star Wars is the most overrated franchise ever."

Seriously, CatBus, if Star Wars is so overrated, why on earth do you bother to work on translating subtitles for such a mediocre franchise into so many languages?

Probably because he truly love Star Wars '77 and ESB '80 and kinda like ROTJ '83.

You can dislike parts of this franchise and still be a fan.

Precisely.  I love the OOT and want it preserved for posterity, globally.  The rest of the franchise could be destroyed in a warehouse fire and I'd only shed a tear for the loss of the Holiday Special.  I don't actually think it's that uncommon a set of opinions here.  Obviously you're free to think differently.

Edited to add another reason: You underestimate the power of OCD.

The Special Editions should be preserved as an example of how not to restore a movie. ;)

If he had, what the heck would would we have done with our free time and disposable income the past 36 years?

A world without Star Wars is not a pleasant concept.

I am of the opinion that Lucas had nothing to do with SW; he might have been nothing more than just a hired hand for the first film and later revised history to make it look like he was the mastermind of the whole franchise. It's like saying Star Trek would not have existed without Rick Berman.

What is it with Ricks?

I kinda thought Star Trek "Nuked the fridge" when they introduced speed limits into TNG.

Instead of lines like...

"Warp 9.7 now ensign!!!" "But Captain, she'll fly apart sir!" "Dammit, fly her apart then!"

We got:

"Warp 2.5 Mr Data, and no faster mind you. We don't want to break any Starfleet Health and Safety regulations now do we.  Afterall I'm sure the Aliens we are pursuing will have adopted a similar code of practice"

You must not be aware that the reason why Voyager has tilting nacelles and why the Enterprise-E is narrow and long (compared to Enterprise-D) is because creating an elongated warp field keeps it from causing damage to subspace.

I presumed the designers thought it looked cool. If it's not said on screen, I don't lose sleep over it. And that doesn't get the Defiant off the hook. ;)
