Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

Yeah, Hamlet being haunted by his dad was soooo lame. ;)

I presume what was left of Anakin vanished between Luke dragging him onto the shuttle and escaping the Death Star. Lucas said somewhere the armor was empty when Luke burns it. Had we seen the body vanish in the movie, that would have spoiled the ending a tad...

If it's the usual retcon by George, one can presume Ben and Yoda helped him cross over. Qui Gon didn't vanish either.

Just to let people know, I'll pass the torch to Spaced Ranger who was kind and offered to help out with this. That is great as I rarely find the time and motivation on this these days. And I'm sure he'll do a great job and gets things moving on this ever delayed project.

*cymbal-hit* Thanks for the intro, msycamore. Glad to help.

"It would be nice to have three additional officers."
As I PM'ed to msycamore, I would use some of my free time (little as it is) to get this moving according to his design. My thinking was to have it organized like a parallel development so that anyone can drop his work into it or pull the need-work sections out of it, for those who could get it done better/faster. (My resources are more limited than most, so I'll need help with the logistics of moving things around.)

"I want to help you. You can help me. Here. Take a biscuit."
Also, with the possibility of new/renewed sourcing, much of the make-work/fix-ups, with which msycamore had to deal, can hopefully be eliminated.

"The new alignment!"
Once I confer with msycamore, I'll post the layout and what can be done as mentioned in previous posts (great work you all have done / are doing).

Welcome aboard, Spaced Ranger!

Does this remind anyone of anything?

Can you give me the exact time references, so I can try a recapture when I'm ready? If there's something wrong in my pipeline, the sooner I find it the better.

I could but as the issue apparently appeared randomly between your captures I'm afraid that any time references wouldn't be of any help to you if you would attempt a new cap. :( Another problem, is the culprit the LD player (8210) or your DVD-recorder? Don't know what would be the best way to find out...

Or the D704? Maybe I ought try the analog input on my DV camcorder...

v2 of the explosion montage:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OunpliDRC0

Changes include:
-moved Richter sub for R2 to later (thanks Rogue-theX) and used a different sub for right before he attacks
-removed all of the NASA blow up the moon clips except the actual explosion shot
-used a different section of the song to fit the new video sequence (FIGHT!)
-extended the Prometheus shots of the ship falling and Shaw's reaction (necessary to fit the music)
-used a different view out Anakin's cockpit as the song ends to match the doors starting to close in the next shot

It flows much better now. :)

The Star Trek 2009 decompression shot would fit in really well with the Reliant taking damage.

Wouldn't a Samuel L Jackson movie where he's bald make slightly more sense? ;)

I don't think the argument "Wouldn't... make slightly more sense?" is fully applicable to a FanEdit with 'Ridiculousness' in the title lol

I merely thought a clip from Shaft could work, as it was Mace's theme song in AOTR, and there's always Snakes on a Plane. :)

Either movie could work in the opera scene.

I've heard he still did work for his brother gardening sometime in the mid to late 2000's. A bit of a dick when it comes to Star Wars fans, but whatever, he's a model guy otherwise.

Based on one story I've heard about female fans going crazy at the Yuma location for ROTJ, I don't blame him.

Some people really enjoy working with their hands no matter how much they're worth.

I'd kiss a shell dweller to lay my hands on a decent widescreen print at this point.

BTW, I got someone to ask about THX over at the Warner Archive Twitter, but no response as of yet...

Oh good! Are you eyeing this one as well?

If other LD's have the same hiccups in the same places as mine did when digitized, we might finally know what exactly has been giving msycamore headaches.

Why is it sickening? He's hardly the highest paid actor in Hollywood, and given the amount of stunts he's done himself in the Indy movies and elsewhere, he's worth every penny. He's probably one of the most humble guys in the acting biz. You don't see him in the scandal sheets much if at all.

He had some pretty lean years before Star Wars made him a star. I read somewhere he held onto his carpenters tools for many years after hitting the big time, just in case.

And how many movie heroes have actually rescued someone in real life?

When did you first realize that Courtship of Princess Leia was going to be irredeemably bad?

For me, it was the revelation that Han is really a king, and C-3p0's musical number celebrating the fact. (For those who haven't read the book: I swear I am not making this up.)

Oh come on! Han's a king? They totally ripped off Spaceballs! Mel Brooks should sue!

And I thought dropping a moon on poor Chewie was the low point of the EU.

What's next, Lando finds out he's related to Mace Windu?

I think I need to lie down...

Planet Earth was the second attempt at that particular premise. The first version, Genesis II was much better, but network suits are fickle, and like to "fix" things.

Another pilot, The Questor Tapes, almost made it to series, but the network tried to shoehorn it into becoming a retread of The Fugitive.

How Gene kept his cool, and never tried to throttle these network idiots is beyond me.

I will buy Gene's spooky supernatural pilot film Spectre in a heartbeat if Fox ever releases it on video. Especially if it's the racy European version. ;)

If you mean grain, that's the fault of some studio's overuse of noise reduction, not the format itself.

Isn't film grain just a natural occurrence on film, it becomes more noticeable depending what film stock you use or what film format....16mm film when blown up on a projection screen would have more grain evident.

I think when TPM was released on BD the digital scan was processed and cleaned up so much (DNR) that it not only removed grain but also removed so much detail that it made the characters look like waxworks

J

Some filmmakers have used specific film stocks to achieve a certain look. The choice of camera lenses also play into this. It's an artistic choice as much as important as what paint is used in a portrait. Some digitally shot films have had fake grain added!

Some digital still cameras I've seen have modes to emulate film as well.

An old movie should never be manipulated to look like a modern one, especially by people who had no part in it's creation, and have no idea what they're doing.

The Mono Mix Restoration Project (Released)
Time

CatBus said:

Well, I'm of two opinions on that.

While I think it's great we have a complete mono mix to work with at all, and that it sounds as good as it does, I think its audio quality really pales compared to our Laserdisc-sourced tracks. I find it a little jarring to watch some of our preservations with stunning video and mediocre audio, so I don't give the mono mix as much love as it deserves.

That said, the first time I heard the mono mix "theatrically", it was via a tiny plastic speaker hanging on the window of my parents' car. So to be honest, we'd really have to make it sound a whole lot worse to get "theatrical quality" ;)

You saw Star Wars at the drive in? Coolness!
