It's usually a big wake up call for newer Trek casts when they discover how big the whole fandom part of it really is, and how amplified anything they say or do will become in those circles. And for some of them it is "just a job."

Even the TOS vets aren't safe. Nimoy's book I am not Spock was misconstrued as a deep loathing of the character, especially when he wasn't going to return for Phase II, or what eventually became TMP.

Shatner famously told a throng of Trekkies in a 1986 SNL skit to "Get a life!". Some people took it as a serious statement about how he really felt about the fans. He was constantly asked about whether he was joking or not for years afterward, even using the line for the title of one of his books.

As for flipping off the fans, I've heard of things other Trek actors have said in the past that were not very polite, so this is hardly anything new.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

Love or hate STID, I thought Cumberbatch was pretty good until I found out he wasn't some bloke named John Harrison. ;)

Seriously though, he did pretty well with what was a hopeless situation, trying to fill Ricardo Montalban's shoes. I'm looking forward to hearing him as Smaug in part 2 of The Hobbit this fall.

And before anyone starts kvetching about J.J. hiring people he's worked with before, remember George kept hiring that Harrison Ford guy long after American Graffiti.

Yes, but I haven't seen any STID stuff in the toy aisles. Most of the summer blockbusters are represented. Even that snail movie got a toy line.

ok, no toy, so what?   It doesn't change my point.  No Trek fans, no Trek movies.   No Trek movies,  Pegg doesn't get paid.

And then punish everyone else involved who didn't say anything negative to the fans?

One of the many perils of being a celebrity is something said in the heat of the moment is preserved for all time. And some in the media would love to create an angry nerd war just to get a few more web hits.

When one of your favorite movie directors has been symbolically flipping you the bird for nearly two decades, a celebrity slip of the tongue pales in comparison. ;)

I've seen Room 237 once already, but I may have to get the home video release to watch the extras.

The latest "theory" I've stumbled across online trumps them all.

I've played the "Redrum" mod for Duke Nukem countless times over the years, and I still get lost in the Overlook. ;)

If anyone has the Blu Ray, and could take a couple high quality screencaps of a specific scene, please send me a PM? I don't have a Blu Ray drive for the PC yet.

Here is the total list of movies I've watched since last Wednesday. Due to the sheer amount, I won't say what it is about them I like/dislike, I'll just give them my rating (rounded off to the nearest whole number).

The Lost Boys (1987) - 8/10

Forbidden Planet (1956) - 6/10

Highlander III: The Sorcerer/The Final Dimension/etc. (1994) - 5/10

The Lion King (1994) - 9/10

The Barber (2002) - 5/10

Bringing Out the Dead (1999) - 7/10

The Blair Witch Project (1999) - 7/10

Rear Window (1954) - 5/10

The Limey (1999) - 7/10

Pet Sematary (1989) - 6/10

Children of the Corn (1984) - 7/10

Bad Boys (1983) - 7/10

The Dark Angel (1987) - 7/10

Aladdin (1992) - 8/10

Mystery Date (1991) - 6/10

Predator 2 (1990) - 6/10

Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983) - 4/10

The Shining (1980) - 6/10

The Village (2004) - 5/10

Run (1991) - 6/10

The Mask of Zorro (1998) - 8/10

The Hitcher (1986) - 7/10

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) - 8/10

Psycho (1960) - 8/10

The Frighteners (1996) - 8/10

Dirty Harry (1971) - 6/10

Misery (1990) - 8/10

Batman Forever (1995) - 4/10

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) - 8/10

Adjusted the scores on a few of those ;-)

The Lost Boys (1987) - 0/10... just for the dayglo Saxophone scene alone

Rear Window (1954) - 10/10... an audacious masterpiece of suspense and filmmaking artistry

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) / Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) - a billion out of/10... films don't get no better than this

The Shining (1980) - 6/10... yes for the european cut but 9/10 for the longer US cut

Rest of the scores are more or less bang on. Impressive viewing, I went through a phase of watching a critically lauded old classic I hadn't seen everyday. Great way to discover things... and some overated tosh too lol

I picked up the European cut of The Shining on HD DVD since it was cheap to get. (And region free.)  Interesting to see what Kubrick shortened or totally deleted, but the U.S. cut is what I'm used to.

The theories people come with about what the movie means get stranger and stranger!

I remember this one from an episode of Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World. They subjected it and several other spooky photos to a high degree of high tech scrutiny. This was the only one where they couldn't find any camera or film anomalies to explain the image.

It's also the creepiest ghost photo I've ever seen.

The FX tests for the Poltergeist closet demon look very different from the finished film.

Star Trek Into Darkness Bonus disc (Released)
Time

From a commenter over at Trekmovie...

182. ObsessiveStarTrekFan - August 30, 2013

Now, here’s something interesting for the Aussies… Big W is advertising the Star Trek Into Darkness (3D Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy) (3 Discs) Blu-ray on pre-order for $48AUD.

The Special Features Big W is advertising are:
- Villain Piece – Opening Sequence Piece – Movie Magic Piece – Bad Ship Piece – Makeup/VFX/Allen [sic - I think they mean Alien...] – Post Production Piece – Making of Piece – Fan Contest Piece – Mission Continues Piece – Deleted Scenes – Bloopers – Easter Eggs – Roundtable

That seems to be more features than I thought were available on the US versions (still no commentary, though)…

If that advertising is accurate, I might have to re-think just getting the DVD. I won’t be pre-ordering, though – I’ll want to read the back of the case myself before deciding whether I’m prepared to commit to spending $48.
