4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I have a friend that is an audio engineer at Skywalker Sound.  One time I asked him about his thoughts on the OUT vs SE, etc.  His response was basically that he didn't understand why I or anyone else would care.

Is he even a fan? I imagine someone who doesn't give a rat's ass about Gone With The Wind could care less if the Cinemascope version was the only version available either.

Loving Star Wars probably isn't mandatory to work at Lucasfilm anyway. ;)

Ghostbusters - Criterion PCM Track (see Jonno's post; plus lots more info) (Released)
Time

I saw it on a XD cinema screen Thursday night. It thankfully looked like film. Grain was intact, which I'm sure the clueless elsewhere will complain about. I was a little surprised how soft some of the original photography was. Shots in the second half of the film were much sharper.

There was one optical FX element wobbling right before Mr. Staypuft steps on the church. Everything else held up pretty well for a thirty year old film. I guess 35mm release prints concealed a lot of warts.

The colors on things like the library ghost, and the proton beams were vivid and beautiful.

For some reason, I never noticed Slimer has a huge buttcrack before. O_O

I think I've tuned out all the not so subtle Coke product placement all these years, (they owned Columbia at the time) but it's there. ;)

The soundtrack was respectful for a remix, (although I'm sure GB had a 70mm release?) and I didn't detect any modern meddling. For the first time, I was able to make out what tv show is overheard when the guys are searching the Sedgewick Hotel hallways.

For those of you who have never seen it, here's Zuul on Saturday Night Live in 1986. ;)

Standalone CD recorder for Laserdisc audio capture?
Time

I was finally able to uncrate my new Teac, and hook it up to my 704 via toslink tonight. The unit is fairly simple to operate. It's surprisingly solid, hefty, and well made. (And yes, Made in China.) The remote is the only thing that feels and looks cheapo, but I've been spoiled by LD player remotes for decades.

The synchronized recording feature didn't want to work, as the LD probably doesn't have a TOC like a CD would. (Using an mid '80's title for the test.) Not really an issue so long an I can manually hit record and stop.

I was getting worried as the VU meters were not moving much as I made my capture. Finalizing was easy and painless. Popped the CD-R into my Blu Ray and it sounds like the Laserdisc!

Whether it's actually bit perfect remains to be seen. Maybe I should capture my Mortal Kombat DTS LD, and send it off to someone to analyze? ;)

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

Didn't realize you were going dual layer with this. We still need to get the tv spot properly scanned down the line.

The 1978 trailer is around in good quality. If I don't still have it, msycamore should.

I also think the two music videos heavily influenced by the film would make good extras. Calling All Girls doesn't seem to have ever been included on any official Queen video release I can find. All the Youtube versions are dodgy.
