What make/model of DVD recorder was used? Of course, the discs themselves might be the culprit.

Is there any weird jerkiness to the video? Like frames are being dropped? It's probably my crappy cable system, but I only see this on the SD subchannels.

If you can get your friend to capture the next broadcast on the 25th, maybe just use single layer discs this time?

That one was lots of fun. I always liked the little details like all the bootprints in the snow. It also complemented the Turret and Probot playset.

It was great Kenner moved away from those sets that were mostly cardboard. Kenner recycled that "Land of The Jawas" base one time too many.

It's a shame they never did a proper Carbon Freeze chamber outside the Micro Collection. And that cardboard one that was a Sears' exclusive doesn't count. ;)

Well, this is getting interesting isn't it? It's the ABC cut except for the elevator scene. Saw it on ThisTv this morning before rushing off.

I'm guessing someone at Paramount put in the alternate take before handing off a tape to ABC, and presumably muted the end of David's "You Son of a Bitch!" line. ABC could have made a snip or two on their own, but they likely couldn't put in a alternate take.

Someone is going to have to watch the ABC and ThisTv versions side by side to catch any other slight differences.

To the best of my memory, the TWOK credits are simply squeezed, at least they were on the ABC. As they played out over a starfield and not live action footage, there would have been no need to reformat the titles.

The older Trek films are being syndicated by a distributor I've not heard of before. (I saw their logo on the end of a showing of Nemesis a few months back.) Somebody clearly grabbed the wrong tape in the vault.

Whatever preservation comes of out of this is probably going to have to use a bit of everything.

Episode IV: A Ridiculous Hope

How hard would it be to have this iconic Trek battle mixed into the canyon scene where Luke gets ambushed by the Sand People? ;)

Threepios fall could trigger the boulder that falls on the Gorn...

Kirk's bamboo cannon could be what knocks Artoo out earlier in the movie.

Alternatively, you could have the canyon scene from Raiders playing out at the same time, as it was filmed in the same location.

the question of objective video quality

The use of the DVNR1000 was not only heavy-handed in 1993, it was unnecessary*. I can see the smearing on my 13" 4:3 CRT (Sony KV-13FS110). This looked like shit in 1993 (DefCol LDs), 1995 (Faces LDs), 2006 (GOUT DVDs), and now.

And, yes, people complained about it in 1993 on Usenet; mostly on alt.video.laserdisc.

I know this is just my opinion, so it's certainly subjective, but I think it comes a lot closer to being objective than many of assessments given in previous posts.

(* FWIW, I've seen the pre-DVNR1000 master used for the DefCol ANH. It's not that dirty; certainly not dirty enough to make the use of the DVNR1000 a requirement for release. I think this is just a case of George&co. wanting to play with toys again.)

There were video magazines that made the same observations at the time. I almost took the DC boxset back to the store because I thought some of the discs were defective in some way, and I was rocking with a 21 inch tv at the time.

I didn't know what DVNR was back then, but I knew something didn't look right compared to previous releases.

There were so many things botched or simply half assed on such a prestigious and expensive Laserdisc release, (it was the flagship THX mastered title)  it's not even funny.

The horse is less scary once you've seen World War One photos of the same thing.

However, when I saw this in a old documentary about nuclear weapons, it was freaky.

You'd think the Beeb would have sued Warner's over knicking that Matrix thingy. ;)

The number of concepts Who did years or even decades before anyone else is pretty amazing.

Some toy collecting magazine hung the name "monkey leia" on that hideous thing. I can only imagine what Carrie must have thought! Leia looks rather mannish.

Maybe Kenner used a reference photo of Princess Vespa's stunt double by mistake?

The whole POTF line was popping steroids, except for the droids. Although a buffed out Threepio and Artoo would have been hilarious.
