Tom Hanks first ever acting role on TV was in a movie called Mazes and Monsters. It was all about the evils of D&D and it was about a highschool kid who got so tied up in his D&D game that he lost touch with reality and killed a man. it was part of the huge scare that lasted to when i was a kid where parents were sure D&D brainwashed kids and human sacrifice was part of the game. it was complete BS but that didn't stop the scar from lasting more then a decade and this stupid movie was one of the big thing that spread it. When i was a kid children were still forbidden to talk to any kid who owned a D&D book and kids were kicked out of school for wearing D&D shirts, that is how bad it was.

I laugh now because I think alot of those people are fine with shootings in schools as long as no one is playing an RPG.

I remember the fear of all things RPG was still great enough that I had to sneak my first Final Fantasy game home when i was a kid and all the kids in my town knew better then to let their parents catch them with an RPG video game. These things were seen as a bigger danger then drugs.

Mazes and Monsters was loosely based on a real life disappearance that was blamed on D&D. The truth was far less sensational, (and much more tragic) but Satanic Panic taking was hold in the 70's, and poor journalism didn't help.

I happen to like the movie. (It's an early 80's time capsule, and the dungeon monster Tom Hanks thinks he sees is pretty bad ass.) The finale at the World Trade Center is hard to watch today, for obvious reasons.

IIRC, there were a couple tv stations that wouldn't run certain TOS episodes such as Catspaw in syndication in the 70's. Whether the animated episode The Magicks of Megas Tu aired in those not so enlightened areas of the country, I have no idea.

I think you're missing the point of the thread. Such items are pricey, but do not rise to the level of batsh*t crazy.

The bids on this do...

'Round The Bend'

It was a late 80s satirical English children's show about a Crocodile and a rat who lived in a sh*t smelling sewer and broadcast wee and bum based spoof cartoons. Quite surprising it was ever broadcast really.

Wee-man and the Masters of the Looniverse

Botman

Thunderpants vs Bumrah

I like it! You could never have gotten away with that on tv in the U.S. back then. Not too surprised to see that Spitting Image was involved.

Really going PG-13 on this one? ;)

You could go from that right into the main bunny carnage.

And don't forget there's a nice scene in Naked Gun 33 1/3, that could be Leslie Neilsen's last stand. You could even throw in Robert Stack beating up those guys in Airplane!, presuming Kramer survived the tower scene. ;)

And you have got to find a place for this!

Dial M for Murder (1954)

Bland direction, no likable characters, and all that convoluted nonsense with the keys near the end make this one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen. Ray Milland's performance is the only real saving grace this picture has.

I'm positive that were it not for Hitchcock's name, this movie would've been forgotten decades ago.

C-

But did you see it in 3-D, as Sir Alfred intended? ;)

I think more sound effects need to be in there. More blaster shots, gunshots, etc. (It can be lower in the mix than the song.) The clones need to have their usual laugh when they off the Jedi. Plo Kloon(?) could curse when he crashes his ship. Actually, all the Jedi could curse when they buy the moisture farm.

Falkor could holler "Atreyu!" as he and Obi Wan fall.

The Fax machine(?) could emit Artoo's various screams.

The main killer rabbit scene, where it's attacking all the knights at once might work even better.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

It's interesting to see that the originaltrilogy.com people are by and large the ones with the most negative expectations about Episode VII, compared to the forums and comments sections I've been looking at. Given the reactions to the rumors here, I wonder if there's any possible storyline that could be suggested that wouldn't get a bad reaction.

I know there are a lot of people in general who really dislike JJ Abrams, but I'm pretty neutral in that regard. I thought that the Star Trek films had good and bad points, but were entertaining films overall. I do think that he's a competent filmmaker, which may be too high praise, depending on your opinion of him.

Some people are just very vocal around here, and then there's that prequel hangover that hasn't quite gone away. ;)

If Guinan had been in the movie, her personal history with the Borg could have lent those scenes more weight. It's a lot tougher for someone in a starfleet uniform to challenge Picard on his course of action no matter their personal history, as the scene with Worf shows.

As it is, Lily serves as the plot exposition character for the benefit of the general audience, who need the Borg explained to them.

Last time I checked we weren't allowed to make personal attacks on people with different notions. So unless that's changed It might be prudent to dial down the name calling.

It's not a personal attack to point out the flaws in someone's argument in a humorous fashion. If one is going to express a preference for old video technology, they need to back it up with something more concrete than HD sucks, and that televisions shouldn't be that big anyway.

It's their responses that tell us whether they are sincere in their opinions, or just trolling the board.

Oh, yeah, no doubt about that - he can watch it black and white and pan and scan too for all I care. What I'm doubting is his premise that HD video is sharper than real life is. :-D

Yeah that's one of the things he says that gets me too lol.

You just made me think of something, and now I'm curious if someone has ever tried it before... an edit of SW to be like those short "silent films" of the 1920's. Black & white, no sound, and intertitles. That could actually be a lot of fun to watch, from a completely new (but old) perspective :)
