What are you reading?

Finally! A book I managed to read all the way through! Of course, it being a rather thin book written for kids, that's no big surprise, is it?

Well, Bunnicula is an alright book for children, but reading it as an adult, I can't help but find it meh. That's rather sad, though, as I enjoyed the Bunnicula series when I was a kid. Now I'm hesitant to read the sequels in fear of having a similar reaction to them, that my warm childhood memories of the series will be spoiled.

There was a Sat AM series in the 80's that adapted a different children's book each week, and I clearly recall an adaptation of this. Yet I can't recall any other episodes.

Don't watch the sequels.  To call them the PT of the Neverending Story universe would be an understatement.  They are not based on any book and they are rubbish.

And the Childlike Empress crying in Tobar's gif there is an amazing actress for such a young child.

I'd pay money to see a Rifftrax of part 3. Give into the Nasty! ;)

Negative One and TeamNegativeOne

I was telling Frink how it's hilarious how cagey Negative One constantly is about himself and his project (yes, I'm going with the "it's just one guy" theory), like government or Lucasfilm agents are just about to bust down his door, when mverta is over in the Legacy thread all like "Hey, I'm Mike Verta! This is my restoration!" Granted Legacy won't be distributed in the same way the Team Negative One preservation will be but like, guy, if Harmy and Adywan haven't been given cease and desists you're probably good.

Realizing this doesn't make the spooky dreams of the robot policemen from THX in constant pursuit of me go away though. Bad enough that my pal Jaxxon gets paranoid when he sees bearded men in plaid flannel shirts. ;)

Design failures (and successes) of the PT

Yeah, they even admit in one of the DVD bonus features that they cheated on the Jedi starfighters. Artoo's legs would be hanging out the bottom, which begs the question why not design something that an astro droid can actually fit inside in the first place? Like it was going to cost too much?

The incredible cross sections book tries to show how Artoo fits into the Naboo starfighter, and it's ridiculous.

I think the Artoo units in the Episode II Jedi fighters are supposed to be plugged into the ship all the time, and unable to run around because they don't have legs or a proper body. Not that it makes any more sense. ;)

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?
Time

Lucas said it was too expensive to restore, therefore it must be so.

Even if that was remotely true, Lucasfilm could raise the cash in a matter of hours appealing to fans online. It was done for Manos: The Hands of Fate, a film with a much smaller fanbase.

The Audio Preservation Thread
Time

Like the infamous helicopter shadow in The Shining, it was visible because the film was presented open matte on early video releases. There was nothing to be fixed, because it would never be seen in a proper theatrical presentation.

An old Laserdisc catalog actually used the bike chain scene to explain open matte films, (and the letterbox format) although there was never a widescreen version of the film released on LD.

I got burned on one of the Japan LD's. The sound quality was poor as well. The 20th anniversary version is not what we want. That has the remix from hell.

This PAL version should have Digital Sound.

The obvious problem is I don't have a PAL LD player.

JEDIT: Here's another one.

I've read that Carrie Fisher was considered for the role of Lois Lane in the '78 Superman film. I wish she had gotten the part; I can't stand Margot Kidder or her homely Keith Richards face.

I respectfully disagree! She looked darn good.

Only a year after Star Wars, audiences might not have been able to imagine Princess Leia playing Lois Lane. They cast an unknown to play Superman for  a reason.

The woman deserves a lot of respect her loyalty to Richard Donner in the Superman II debacle. Being reduced to a cameo in Superman III was the result.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Danfun128 said:

IDK why, but for some reason it seems amazing how long the VHS format lasted (from the 70s to around 2006). My family didn't have a DVD player until about 2005.

The digital tv switchover was probably the last nail in the coffin. Part of the format's popularity was the ability to record anything you wanted off of tv, and keep that recording. Now people fret over their DVR running out of space.

It's amazing to me how much control over that people have willingly relinquished in the past decade. And now Hollywood keeps Blu Ray recorders far away from American consumers.

^A VCR not even a full three years old dies just like that? Damn, SilverWook must be right about how cheap last-generation VCRs were made. All the VCRs I ever owned (minus the three VCR/DVD combos I have/had) were bought second hand, and the one I held onto the longest lasted from 2002 all the way to 2007/2008.

If a VCR is light enough to be held up comfortably with one hand, it's probably cheapo. The other trick is to peek past the cassette door, and see if there's more plastic parts than metal.

I was amazed that ION playback only VHS deck with the USB output was so well constructed, and actually a bit heavy. I was tempted to pick one up, except it's mono sound.
