And from what I understood they only had concept art for Grievous to go off of, so they had to invent his personality on their own.

But to be fair, I understand why George wanted to make this General character a mustache-twirling villain that runs away and gets beat over and over. It fits into that villain archetype of old serials. I don’t think people would have been as disappointed if Grievous had just been set up that way in the micro-series as well.

Growing up I always rationalized the characterization difference as Grievous being pretty powerful right after his transformation, but slowly became weaker as his remaining organics struggled to exist within his cyborg body.

Only the serials I’ve seen have better villains. Grevious doesn’t hold a candle to Ming the Merciless!

Didn’t the micro series air slightly ahead of Episode III? Coming off of that impression of Grevious into the movie version would be a letdown.

Yes, the micro-series aired from 2003 to 2005, ending not long before Revenge of the Sith was released. The micro-series was the very first appearance Grievous made too.

Thanks for an actual answer. 😃

You’re on my radar with this anti-Rose stuff. Not a good place to be.

Do you keep track of people who dislike Jar Jar Binks too? Just curious.

Are you aware of how bad the Rose bashing online has become in the past 18 months?

Bashing the actress was wrong, we still can say Rose isn’t a good character.

And you don’t think really wanting the character to die in the next movie isn’t a thinly veiled expression of anything else?

Sometimes, One Can Know too much about something, but can’t say what they know…yet.

The situation with jar jar and Ahmed best does not give excuse for poor treatment of Rose tico and Kelly Tran. What it does is gives us evidence of why we should not permit such behavior. Sadly for myself I was not mature enough at the time of phantom menace to realize that my actions and words could have such an impact on a person’s life and well-being.

But you weren’t making fun of the actor at the time? Even Mr. Best has made fun of his character, voicing Jar Jar on Robot Chicken and winning an Emmy award for it.

We got a real badass over here.

Should be obvious IDGAF about spoilers for everything Star Wars. I stopped caring. Whoopty doopty doo.

The spoilers are weak. Really hoping Rose Tico dies since she’s a boring character.

You’re on my radar with this anti-Rose stuff. Not a good place to be.

“Evil” George Lucas creating the movies you love and cherish! “Evil” George Lucas pioneering the technology yourselves used to restore the original theatrical versions! Fans can restore the past as good as an official company (to some extent, I understand you don’t have access to the original negatives, but you can still get pretty close).

Also. What man in his right mind celebrates the woman who divorced him? She wanted to live a quite life for a reason, do you really think she wants to be credited as the major reason her ex-husbands masterpiece was so successful? That seems like rubbing salt into wounds.

The Academy said so, not us.

Interesting that Williamson and Infantino had their stock company of aliens. I wonder how many other artists do that?

Considering how fast artists had to draw comics it wasn’t unusual that they found shortcuts. Though I can’t remember having read anywhere that they actually kept stock background characters, though it would make sense.

And from what I’ve been able to find out about Al Williamson, he simply enjoyed drawing lizards and mushrooms:

RINGGENBERG: “What do you like to draw the most, given a choice?”
WILLIAMSON: “Lizards. Mushrooms? Rocks.”
-Al Williamson Interviewed by Steve Ringgenberg in 1984

In Infantino’s case however, I’d say scaly humanoids with pointy noses and fin-ears (like this guy) was just how he drew generic aliens when he didn’t have time to think up anything too specific. A sort of mental “shorthand” I suppose.

I would expect the regular run to have to invent some aliens. Otherwise, we’d be seeing the same Cantina fellows every time and everyplace! And I was thinking of The Wheel storyline in particular before I clicked on that link. 😉

Infantino did actually re-purpose some Cantina aliens during the Wheel story-line. And once more in “Return of the Hunter”. The only other time he did this, as far as I can remember, was when they actually returned to Tatooine.

I forgot about that one. Mufftak’s buff cousin?

The one’s in ROTH slipped by me, probably because there weren’t too many photos of the far background cantina guys in public circulation back then. The band and the aliens who made it into the early Kenner line had better agents I guess. 😉

This is regarding another Lucasfilm Marvel Adaptation that has different or incorrect art from the film.

The Howard the Duck 1986 Movie Adaptation has amazing art from Kyle Baker (one of his first Marvel jobs and he drew it with huge style). The final monster in the film was the huge scorpion looking creature beautifully designed by Phil Tippet. In the comic adaptation, this creature is missing and is replaced by a giant Duck that looks just like Howard but huge and monster sized.

It’s really strange and obviously a place holder of some kind. It makes me wonder how late in the design process they settled on that Scorpion and what Kyle Baker was told to put there. Also from my own memory that adaptation came out a few weeks after the film came out which means they never even went back to correct it knowing it was wrong and let it publish with the incorrect monster at the end.

I would love to see an image of that!

Maybe Lucasfilm/Universal didn’t want the reveal of the Dark Overlord spoiled? Much like the ad campagain for the film itself kept Howard mostly hidden. There were even two versions of the music video. The one that ran after the movie was out showed Howard’s face.
Howard fighting a giant version of himself seems more like a situation from the original comics though.
Given the reception of the film at the time, Marvel may simply have written the adaptation off and didn’t care to revise it.
