Are The Prequels That Bad?
Time

I saw BBTS theatrically in 1980, and I felt more when St. Exmin died than the death of any PT character.

Okay, maybe some teen hormones were involved, but any reason to post picture of Sybil Danning will suffice for me. 😃
And you can’t really compare the visual FX of a Roger Corman production to what ILM did with millions more to spend. I still think the movie looks sweet on Blu Ray. What ever happened to that James Cameron kid who worked on the film anyway?

I’m having flashbacks to that weird French tv Star Wars thing with all the dancers dressed like Threepio and Vader.
Kudos to them apparently shooting with real analog cameras and keeping it 4.3. So many 70’s style videos blow the illusion by being widescreen. One or two effects are more 80’s than 70’s video technology, but I won’t nitpick too much. 😉

And I’m miffed I haven’t been able to see GOTG2 again. It still hasn’t turned up at the bargain theater.

Just be glad it wasn’t an Eraserhead coloring book. 😉

I recall the Dune action figures and toys, but never saw the coloring book before. There was a storybook and a Marvel comic adaptation. I imagine all three skipped over Baron Harkonnen’s er, um, appetites and Sting’s steam bath.
Dune was PG-13 though.

Why I had a Baron Harkonnen action figure I can’t remember. I suppose he could threaten to roll on my SW figures?

Maybe Eccleston didn’t believe the reboot of Doctor Who was actually going to work. Think about how little Patrick Stewart was prepared for Star Trek: The Next Generation for the first couple years. It’s just a TV show to some, most eventually grow to love the role, but some just don’t.

I think there’s been a tradition since TNG of giving the casts of the newer Treks a friendly warning/heads up of the craziness that’s about to enter their lives.

If they have any brains, they shouldn’t need a warning. Everyone not living under huge boulder knows what Star Trek is.

Yes, but nothing can prepare you for Trekkers showing up in costume in the audience at the Shakespeare play you’re in. That actually happened to Stewart.

oh how horrible. He had to put up with people in the audience in star costumes. btw, you do realize that after doing the tv series and 4 movies, Stewart made enough money from it that he wouldn’t have to work another day for the rest of his life, right?

If you aren’t expecting it (can’t imagine why you would), it would certainly catch you off guard.

Unless they were being disruptive in the audience, I don’t see the big deal. What does it matter to the actor what the audience is wearing? Just perform the play.

It’s uncomfortable for some people. Sometimes they want to be remembered for more than just one TV show or movie they did.

Then I would suggest those people stay away from things like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Doctor Who.

Being aware of Trek as a tv show or film franchise does not mean you’ve looked deeply into the fandom. (A few were fans before being cast in later Trek incarnations, but most are just hard working actors.) Even Star Wars is just a movie to some folks.

I’m sorry but I disagree. Unless you’ve lived all your life on deserted island with absolutely no contact with the outside world, you have to know that both Star Trek and Star Wars have a huge devoted and somewhat crazy fan bases. It is not like there never been a Star Trek convention before NextGen.

I’ve had to explain to many people who Spock is. It’s crazy how small everything is in context of the larger world.

YOU’VE HAD TO EXPLAIN TO PEOPLE WHO SPOCK IS‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽ Who the heck are these people and where have they been for the past 50 years‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽‽ My God.

Regular people.

no,no,no,no. Regular people know about Spock. He’s iconic. Regular people might know about Sybok or Sonak

Regular people absolutely do not know about Sybok or Sonak. Hell, I have no idea who Sonak is. I think Sybok is Spock’s dad…? So maybe Sonak is Spock’s mom, although I thought she was human so maybe that’s her Vulcan name.

Even I’m shocked I know who Sonak is. Probably because the nightmarish transporter accident scene in TMP is burned into my brain. No wonder McCoy hates those contraptions.

And I once encountered a middle aged woman who had Star Trek plates in her antique mall type store and didn’t know what the heck Star Wars was. That baked my noodle.

was she in a coma when the movies came out???

Maybe she was an alien visitor in disguise, but even they must have heard of Star Wars. 😉

On a side note, I once had this sticker on my Mom’s car as a joke, and had at least one person ask me questions about it as they thought it was for a real candidate.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

Came across the tail end of the 1953 3-D Western Stranger Wore A Gun on Turner Classic Movies this morning. Did a double take at the big chase scene as the most phony miniature boulders and trees were optically added to the foreground of some shots, presumably to enhance the dimensional effect. I can’t help but wonder if George remembered seeing this before inflicting the same sort of thing on poor Artoo!

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

The Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials were barely 41 years old when I saw them on tv in the wake of Star Wars.

And really, 800 bucks for a Kylo Ren helmet? I saw a really nice Stormtrooper helmet replica at Best Buy that was $80 bucks and probably better made than what was used in the actual film. You can modify a Hasbro Ren helmet to look pretty good I’d bet.
