Movies that have never been released in original form on DVD
Time
"My point is the fanboys here who are talking "boycott" are just punishing themselves because Greedo shots first."

To be honest, I didn't even remember that part. The reason I don't remember it is because I watched the SE's once, because I wanted to see the new additions and see the films in the theatre, which I had never done before. The reason I, personally, am not buying the SEs is because I find many of the new additions ugly, not to mention downright embarrassing. When I saw that scene where the big robot bonks the little one on the head I cringed. The scene with Jabba was embarrassing too, as was the new song in Jabbas Palace. Most of the CG sticks out like a sore thumb and is very obvious, even if you had never seen the originals. So that just leaves the small changes which are hardly noticable and don't matter anyway. So obviously they aren't needed. I want to see the films as they were originally because I liked them better. Does that make me a "Fanboy"? If so, then I guess I'm a fanboy. But at least I am not saying that you should not be allowed to see the version you prefer, the SE's. People want to see them so they should be allowed to. I have not seen a SINGLE arguement on this site, or anywhere else, that justifies the non release of the original version on DVD. George Lucas' arguement just comes down to "I don't like it anymore so I'm not going to let anyone else see it on DVD". Now maybe we can't change his mind, and maybe it is his baby and he owes nobody anything and can destroy the original versions and pretend they never existed and we can't stop him, but is it so wrong that we let our opinions be known? You are certainly letting yours be known, and being much more aggressive and condescending and abusive than most people here have been toward Lucas or any SE fans. So what makes you think that everyone should hear your opinion but noone who comes to this site, which is called "Originaltrilogy.com", wants to hear what advocates of the original trilogy have to say?

I think one of the problems I have with the SE is that they just can't replace the original. Star Wars will always be Star wars to me, and the SE will always be the SE: An altered version where they have added some cool stuff (and some not so cool stuff), but it can't replace the original. CGI may "look better" in some cases (Although I really think much of the CGI in the SE's was pretty apalling) but that isn't the point. If you readthe original novel, there are many things in it that don't concur with the movie. R2D2 has claws; Vader makes some comment about Tarkin being the Emperors lap dog. There were plenty of other differences but I haven't read it for a few years. Now, if Lucas went back and rewrote the novel to tie in with the movie, or to fit in with what he thinks it should be like now, would it replace the old one? Of course not. Would it be "better"? Well, the question is irrelevant, because it would be a completely different animal. What Lucas is proposing to do is the same thing. You can't pretend the original never existed. You can't tell me that the SE is better because it contains new and better effects. You could add a thousand explosions, make a planet filled entirely with dewbacks, make Jabba dance a jig for all I care, but it still wouldn't be "better" than the original, and it wouldn't replace it. It would be a different film, a Special Edition, a Directors cut, call it what you will. I would love to see these Ultimate editions when/if they happen, and the new footage if they have it. I love to see new additions to the Star Wars universe, hell I even got exited when a new cut scene appeared in "TIE Fighter". But I just don't want it to replace what is, and what always will be the original versions. Is that too much to ask? Apparantly so...

the SE films are all that are left!!!!

"More people voted Special Editions only then originals only."

That really doesn't prove anything, apart from the fact that more people who liked the SE are so selfish that they don't want both versions released. I disagree with them, and I also disagree with those 8% who said that they only wanted the original version released and not the SE. Both those groups are wrong in my opinion. Lucas belongs to the 16% group; SO, it appears, does MasterSkywalker. Myself and most of the others on this site agree with the 70% majority. Which group do you agree with?

I really don't understand you people who say that a "True Fan" would just accept whatever Lucas decides to give them. Doesn't the fact that I want the films as they were PROVE that I am a "True Fan"? If I didn't CARE about what I bought, didn't care like you clearly don't care, and was willing to accept anything, no matter how different from the real film it was, and wasn't even aware of why it mattered, wouldn't I just be a consumer and not a fan at all, true or otherwise? The fact is that it is BECAUSE I am a fan that I am willing to wait, willing to boycott the SE's. And it has nothing to do with the quality of the picture. If all they were going to do was improve the picture and sound quality and repair the film that has "gone bad and faded", I would not be here. I would buy the DVD's the moment they were released. That isn't what were talking about here.

BOYCOTT (the 2004 OT SE DVD release)
Time
Changes I would like to see if Mr Lucas got his hands on LOTR:

1. The folk dancing scene at Bilbo's party replaced by a most amusing break dancing sequence, featuring a digitized Sam and Frodo and a rock band made up of Elves, Orcs and Tree herders.

2. Golem jumps into the lava in a selfless attempt to save the others. He screams as he falls.

3. Add more tree herders to to thos scenes in The Two Towers. Add some humourous CGI such as a big tree knocking a little tree on the head, or maybe kicking him into the air. Hilarious!

4. New scene added at the end of ROTK, showing the orcs celebrating the demise of Sauronin the previously unseen Kingdom of Orcs. Oooh pretty!

Any other ideas?

BOYCOTT (the 2004 OT SE DVD release)
Time

Okay, I have seen a few posts mentioning this but I wanted to try and start something “official”.

Signed the petition? Given your opinion in the forums? Proteted at the official site? Still not happy? Then put your money where your mouth is and join me in boycotting the SE DVD’s!

There IS something you can do.

Hopefully if there are enough people genuinly interested in this we might be able to start a new petition where people can “pledge” their determination not to buy unless we have, at the very least, a promise that the originals will be released on DVD at some point in the future. We can do it people!

George Lucas' explanation why the OT is obsolete to him
Time
Luke30, I don't have any problem with him releasing the SE's at any time. Nor do I think anyone else here does. The problem is that he is implying that he will -not- release the original version. Quote: "I consider The Special Edition as being the final version at this point. I don’t even worry about the other ones, because it went through a lot of incarnations to get to the final stage."

In relation to a boycott, if it was going to be effective something would need to be organised before the release of the SE's. Maybe a petition wherein any who signed it would pledge not to buy them unless the original was going to be released at some stage or something like that. Otherwise it just wouldn't happen.

George Lucas' explanation why the OT is obsolete to him
Time
Does anyone really buy that the SE's are what Mr Lucas originally envisioned when he made the old versions? Did he really picture Jabba as he appeared in ROTJ when he made "A New Hope?" Or did he just decide that he liked the way Jabba looked -after- ROTJ was made? The scenes in the SE's that irked me most personally were the "humorous" scenes, such as the robots hitting each other at the start of the Mos Eisley sequence and the new song in Jabbas Palace. I think his sense of humor has changed since he made the original trilogy and I don't like it (ref: Jarjar Binks... Aargh!)

I simply don't accept that all the changes he made were to make the movies as he originally intended them. Many of these changes could have been done in the original; you don't need CGI to make Luke scream as he falls down the shaft (that particulr addition makes me cringe; isn't it the same scream that the emperor made as he fell down the shaft in ROTJ? How cheap is that? Or maybe the emperor is Lukes grandfather...) Personally I think many of the changes in the SE were superficial, like he felt he needed to make enough changes and add enough new "stuff" to justify calling it the Special Edition, especially in ROTJ; I mean, it makes sense to some degree that he couldn't do much of what he wanted to in ANH as technology/budget were limited, but by the time ROTJ was made he had plenty of dough and the effects were pretty much flawless IMHO. Certainly the scenes using models looked more 'real' to me than the CGI stuff, which you could spot immediately even if you never saw the originals.

BTW as far as the explosions being realistic is concerned, I don't think it's an issue, if you want things to be as they would in real life for a start you would have to get rid of most of the sound effects as everyone knows sound doesn't carry in space. Actually the "ring" was one of the few additions I liked, but for me that isn't the issue. I don't think GL should go back and rewrite the Star Wars novel and cut out all the bits he doesn't like anymore, add in all the bits he wants now and hold a public book burning to destroy all the first editions; the book is the way it is and if I want to read it that way I should be able to. I want the original movies as they were in DVD format, simple as that. I have the VHS versions but the quality simply isn't as good as the DVD format. I don't care about "special features", interveiws, screen savers or any of that stuff, I just want to be able to watch the starwars movies I like in the best format currently available. Mr Lucas doesn't have to watch them if he doesn't want to.

Personally I am going to boycott the DVD if it is just the SE. Not just as a protest but because I really don't like it, I would rather watch the good version on VHS. But even if you do like the SE but still want to see the original on DVD one day, maybe you will consider boycotting to. It may be the only way to convince him to change his mind.
