For newies: What to watch first?
Time
I'd also recommend checking out ocpmovie's de-specialized Classic Edition Trilogy. Of course, I only have the Classic Edition SW myself so far, but it's a great way to be able to watch the OOT in high quality while still being spared the CGI of the SEs. To me, seeing the occasional laserdisc-quality footage matted into the picture is far less distracting than seeing digital cartoons jumping out all over the place.

Also, ocp's Special Edition Hype is worth watching, if just for a flashback to the media saturation revolving around the SE releases 10 years ago. I just got this finally, and I enjoyed reminiscing about how excited I was during that time as well. Despite anyone's feelings about the films being digitally altered at the time, I think we all were freaking out because STAR WARS WAS BACK IN THE THEATERS!!

ocp's menu for that thing is hilarious as well. Took me a minute to realize that every short film clip shown in the menu was an expression of feelings about the SE changes:

LUKE: "There's nothing for me here now..."

BEN: "Destroyed. By the Empire."

(etc.)

And if you are interested in more SW TV specials, babyhum's collection is a fantastic high-quality archive of those from both the US and the UK.

Sluggo, I found another Special Edition trailer to add to the list. It's a TV spot for the SE release of ESB plus "still in theaters" Star Wars. You can actually find this on ocpmovie's Special Edition Hype disc as one of the commercials that can be watched separately.

I suspect there may have been more than just that one TV spot for the SE, but I don't know for certain.

These are my sentiments exactly. Kudos for Ridley Scott for insisting on taking the hard road for the sake of better moviemaking. I've always said that CGI should be a tool and not a crutch. It should be used only when absolutely necessary, and it should never draw attention to itself. Filmmakers are becoming lazy and relying on CGI for everything these days (including things like floors!). Uncle George seems to have fallen under the notion that "we'll use CGI for everything, because we can!" What a shame.

Two of the only films I can think of I've seen that use tons of CGI for the surrounding sets successfully are "What Dreams May Come" and "Mirrormask". It works well there simply because both films take place in dreamlike environments that aren't meant to be real, and the CGI only adds to that unreal/surreal factor.

I second that. The higher the quality, the better... that is a moment that needs preserving. I only have it as a low-quality QuickTime file.

I suppose the same should go for the MTV Awards "Best Fight" for digital Yoda, even though it annoys me to no end. I really could have gone my whole life without seeing "Hip-Hop" Yoda and died a happier man.

Reminds me of that Pepsi commercial that was released when the SE versions came out, where Darth Vader swings his lightsaber out over the crowd's head and fights the theater usher. Sounds like they could pull off that stunt for real this time.

I get the impression this is a totally new kind of 3-D, like nothing we've seen before. (Hopefully that means no more 3-D headaches as well!) Lucas was very quickly impressed. I don't think he would have been so impressed so quickly if it looked anything like the old 3-D we're used to.

Of course, Uncle George seems to have lost a lot of credibility around here in recent times...

I am pretty sure they constructed the set (rather than using CG). It includes a very camp Imperial Lieutenant and a rather annoyed Darth.

Do you have this already? If not, would you be interested in including it?

When I get the chance, I will have a look through to see if there are any others on the tape.

I love that one! It's one of my all-time favorites... I've watched it a zillion times, and it still makes me laugh every time. I guess it's from 1996, which would mean the sets are undoubtedly real (funny how important that's become these days).

My copy of it is a file of medium resolution. I have been hoping to upgrade it, so it would be great to get a nicer copy for the project. Drop me an e-mail and we'll work out the details.

Troy: Thanks for the links, but yeah... I'm looking for real ads, not unofficial spoofs or fan creations. However, spoofs and fan-made commercials make worthy preservation projects in themselves.

In the meantime, I'm working on trying to document what my best sources are for the commercials on the list that I do have. Some of them are in decent quality and some are horribly small compressed files. I've also been helping Sluggo out a bit with the trailers project. There are a fair number that weren't included on the official DVDs.

Actually, the ANH picture is taken from a real still, and that's the right head with the right body. However, it's still photoshopped: see that lightsaber he's holding? That's not the one from the original still. The original still had the lightsaber from the Holiday Special in it (for some odd reason), which is a totally different handle.

This scene is so vividly planted in my mind and I hadn't even heard of, or read the novel back then. So now all that remains is to actually find that footage. I think I have this old recording of Star Wars from the TV somewhere, so I'm gonna check that out and see if I can see Luke missing with that rope of his. Wish me luck, cause that is gonna be one hard to find tape. Ain't even sure it still exists...
If you (or anyone else) can come up with hard evidence of Luke missing the first try with his grappling hook (that is, actual footage rather than hearsay or a description of hazy memories), I'll give you a fine prize: an official vintage 1978 still photo from The Star Wars Holiday Special.

Hey, I'll even up the ante and throw in an official, vintage German guidebook for one of the Ewok movies that was shown theatrically over there.

P.S. - The same goes for anyone supplying footage of a snowspeeder crashing into the cockpit of General Veers' AT-AT in ESB, or Rebel fleet ships striking the shield in ROTJ.

That is fantastic news. Not just one, but two copies! At the very least, this will give everyone a pretty good representation of what is and isn't in the 70mm mix.

Just bought a tape deck from e-bay. My old one died years ago and I never replaced it.

Anyway, once the new deck arrives what is the best way to digitize the audio?

BrianM
Hopefully some of the audio experts here can help you out on that. Since these are (I assume) open-air recordings, it probably won't matter all that much since it's mainly only useful for reference purposes. But it's still worth the time to get a good digital copy made of each, I think.

The quality undoubtedly *will* be fine. Until you buy a widescreen TV. Then, and most certainly then, you'll notice that it's not fine anymore as other films fill up your screen nicely and the OUT plays in a little window in the middle of your screen. You can zoom in on it, but quality will suffer.

I don't have a widescreen TV yet myself, but I know it won't be long before I do. And that's why I have a major beef with the non-anamorphic transfer.

"A beam of intense light struck the head, sending pieces of armor, bone, and flesh flying in all directions."

"Screams of injured and dying humans--a peculiarly unrobotic sound, Threepio thought--echoed piercingly above the inorganic destruction."

I hadn't seen the movie at this point, so that's all I had to go on. Doubtful it would have made a PG rating if it had been just like the novel described it.

If only that elusive 70mm mix would turn up somewhere. Surely someone out there must have bootlegged a 70mm showing of the film back in the day, even just the audio? Hope springs eternal, I suppose. In a perfect world, LFL would trot out the 70mm mix as an alternate soundtrack on the OUT releases. Given that it won't be anamorphic, there should be room for it... but in a perfect world, it would be anamorphic too.

I've been listening to The Story Of Star Wars LP on headphones just now, and it's definitely got stereo effects on it. Much of the dialogue sounds pretty mono, though, while sound effects bounce around from ear to ear.

Also, I've noticed how difficult it is to notice the difference between Beru's "Luke... Luke!" line on the LP and the other version from the 35mm mix. Not as obviously different as her later lines, which aren't on the LP of course.

Starkiller -

I concede your points in matching up elements of the LP to elements of the mono mix - they seem to be the same. But is it still possible the LP could be taken from the 70mm mix? After all, isn't the 70mm mix still an unknown variable at this point, given that we don't have a real copy of it? So we don't know how different or similar it is from the other mixes.

What I'm saying is, what if the 70mm mix has the same (or many of the same) elements that the mono mix does? It was also the first mix created as I recall, and if the LP was created early on and before the mono mix existed, then it would make sense that the LP's sound would be taken from the 70mm mix in that case.

All of this is just curious speculation on my part, so I could be totally wrong.

It would be a bit of a task to extract the useful parts, but I wouldn't put it past someone here to be up to that task, combining it I suppose with the audio we already have.

Also, I hear people speak of the LP audio as if it's mono (or from the mono mix). It is not. It is most definitely in stereo. Dialogue and sound effects take advantage of the stereo field. Listen to Han scream as he's chasing after the stormtroopers in the Death Star or Vader coming through the door on the Tantive before he confronts Leia. Just a couple of vivid examples.
Hmmm... I think you may be right. In fact, Aunt Beru's voice on the LP doesn't match the alternate voice on the mono mix version, either. But the LP does contain the full "Open the blast doors!/Close the blast doors!" line and Threepio's "a power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave" line as well. I'm going to take a wild stab and say the LP is actually based on the... 70mm mix?! Someone correct me if they think otherwise.

This audio is seared in my brain now as I've been working on my "Story Of" project for almost 6 months. Which, by the way, is almost complete.

Great news for me, and a number of others, I'm sure!

I'm with Neil on this one. This has been rumored for years, but never confirmed with any hard evidence. The Star Wars Cut Scenes group has discussed this one at length before, and I believe the conclusion we reached was that this is bunk unless evidence surfaces proving otherwise. The Lost Footage document you referenced, though a great piece of work, is rather old now... and a few things in there have since been disproven.

As for the reversed dialogue in the mono mix as mentioned above, I'm almost 100% certain that's wrong as well. I have the original Editdroid version of Star Wars with the mono mix included, and that would have stood out like a sore thumb while watching it since the video would not match the audio. I do wonder, though, if they are reversed on The Story Of Star Wars LP? The audio for that is taken from the mono mix. I used to be able to recite that whole album from memory, but right now I can't recall for certain how those lines play on there. And since I'm at work right now, I don't have the record handy. But if it was reversed on there, that could account for some people's memory discrepancies...

I'll have to check when I get home.

I've made some corrections and edits to the commercial list and added a few more commercials - most notably more of the 2005 commercials by 7 Eleven and Burger King featuring Star Wars characters. I was surprised to see one BK commercial even features Jawas! That would be only the second time ever by my count that Jawas have appeared in a commercial, originally only seen in a Burger Chef spot in 1978.

I do remember that General Mills did offer as a send away off of cereal boxes, a Star Wars tumbler, but I don't know if they ran a commercial for it or not. If they did, it was probably piggy backed with thier regular commercials for the stickers, cards and posters that were in their cereals. Yep... I have a feeling there's a lot more early commercials that ran back then that we don't know about. These will be the hardest to track down, as well as the hardest to find in good quality if we can find them at all. Of course, we have to know for sure what we are looking for first.

Have you thought to try and track down any TV promos for the Holiday Special? I'm sure there were some. Those would be a hoot to see after all these years. You can bet I've thought about that many times... I'm sure there had to be some as well, and chances are I may have even seen one on TV back in the day. But unfortunately, I've never in all these years found any further evidence of one. Since so few people had VCRs back then, someone taping the Holiday Special itself was a rare occurrence... so taping a TV promo for it would be astronomically rare. But I'd give my left arm to have a copy of one.

I'm sure that you are aware that there are DVDs out there with several of the vintage Kenner commercials. I checked your list and there were commericals for the Millenium Falcon, X-Wing and Tie Fighter from 79 and 79. The footage for the X-Wing and Tie Fighter commercial was first seen in the Star Wars collection commercial that ran during the Holiday Special. The entire X-Wing and Tie Fighter commercial did run by itself later. I wish I could find a comprehensive list of all Kenner commecials that ran. It's so difficult finding any information about them, though with all the collectors out there you'd think *somebody* would have documented this. My info was all gleaned from various sources of commercials I had, then put together to make up that list. I believe Rikter has a Kenner commercials DVD in his release list, and I'd really like to get hold of that plus any others out there like it for use in the project.

There was also a commercial for the Star Wars Early Bird pack. Part of the commercial was shown in the Empire of Dreams documentary and I do recall seeing the commercial several times on TV in 78.
I guess this would have to have been early 1978 then, or was it late 1977? Seems they might have wanted to push that one for Christmas.

I seem to recall seeing a commerical for the first Kenner lightsabers with the inflatable blades. Boy those were really hokey.
They sure seemed cool at the time, though. I always wanted one but never got one until recently, when I found one at Celebration 3. Wouldn't surprise me if there was a commercial for it, too... but I've no solid evidence yet.

In fact, I'd almost bet that there was a commericial for everything that Kenner had at the time. I hope that you can turn up more Kenner commercials for Return of the Jedi toys. I only have a couple on my DVD. I have tons of Empire Strikes Back toy commericials but I'd like to have more from Star Wars and Jedi.
One of the reasons why there were more ESB commercials I realized is that they got such a late start on Star Wars (no figures until almost a year after the film came out!), and then such an early start on ESB toys (I think they may have been already airing them by late 1979). So it seems we kinda got short-changed for the Star Wars period toys and commercials... which would explain there being so few of the characters from that film.

The Escape From Death Star, Destroy The Death Star and Adventures of R2-D2 games commericals come to mind. I did see commercials for all of those games. Boy, the more I think about it, the more seems to come back to me.

By the way, I think that this is a great project. It will be interesting to see how much footage you are able to find. Best of luck to you. I can't wait to see the results. If I think of anything else, I'll post it here.
Great... thanks again! And remember, hard evidence is even better, so if you or anyone else can put me in touch with actual footage (even if it's poor quality - at least we can see the commercial existed), then we'll have something more to put on the list.

I'm thinking about putting up a simple page with screen caps for each clip that I've been able to get my hands on. That way not only can you see what each one looks like, but you can also get an idea as to the quality of the source I have (and those with a better source can get in touch!).

I think the reason they were the same is that the promotion was actually through Coca-Cola originally. Here's some info on the two campaigns:

http://www.starwars.com/episode-iii/release/promo/news20050520.html

Also, Burger King issued glasses for all three movies so there should be some commercials for those. The years would of course coincide with the release years of each movie. Yes, I believe this is true. I have a copy of just one of those (ROTJ glasses).

I seem to recall the Proctor & Gamble commercial for the free posters with the purchase of certain Proctor & Gamble products. This would have been for Star Wars in 78.

General Mills cereal had commercials for the Star Wars stickers in boxes of The Monter Cereals, Coco Puffs and etc. These also would have been in 78. General Mills ran commercials for the cereals that had Star Wars trading cards in them. Again in 78.

Cheerios ran commercials, for the posters that were inside their cereal. This was 78 as well.
You may be right. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of these turn up yet, so I'm hoping someone out there has them.

I think those are about the only ones that I can remember. Most of the cereal commercials were of course ran on Saturday mornings. I do remember seeing a few of them, but I don't recall specifics. Hope these help.
