Audience reaction to the reveal?

I'm with Anchorhead in a lot of ways, in that Star Wars is and has always been my favorite film, as well as the one that really matters to me. Had Empire and Jedi never happened, I would still be as big a fan as I am now (perhaps bigger, even?). Though I do really like Empire, and a certain amount of Jedi, nothing stirs my imagination and sense of adventure like the original Star Wars does. All of what makes the story great is encompassed in that one film.

I do make some allowances for the Star Wars Holiday Special, horrifying as it is, since that is in some ways an extension (or perhaps more like a hangnail?) of the original Star Wars film.

Star Wars film versions and best DVD sources
Time
I've just added another item to the list: I forgot about the early press screening version of The Phantom Menace where Darth Maul falls down the shaft but stays in one piece. As with the IMAX cut, there is no known copy in the public's hands.

I was reminded of this while reading Rikter's edits listing here. The listing mentions a supposed early cut where Darth Maul falls apart much later down the shaft than in the version we're used to, but this is too rumoristic for me to include. There is pictorial evidence of the unsplit Maul/splitting Maul (no pun intended) versions. I have never seen any for this other rumored cut.

This doesn't ring a bell for me. But once I organize all the ROTJ commercial clips I have, I'll keep an eye out for that.

Remember the mass advertising of TPM?
Time
I have to agree with Keith on at least the first part of his post. TPM was WAY over-promoted, and the amount of junk merchandise that came out back then was appalling. It really cheapened what little credibility the film had left to see all that junk out there.

But it's true that the original Star Wars movies had probably just as much junk marketed for them. Bedsheets, party napkins, candy dispensers, etc. everywhere you looked. Everything had a Star Wars logo slapped on it.

The big difference I think is this: Star Wars didn't have all that stuff when it first came out. The product was marketed to meet the demand, not anticipate it (at least not with the first film). Remember, there weren't even any Star Wars action figures for almost a YEAR after the film came out. The public wanted Star Wars *anything*, and the market responded. People couldn't get enough.

When TPM came out, most of the merchandising was already lined up, pre-anticipated to sell billions of units. I remember how that felt. The market was flooded, and it just seemed wrong to have them pushing me to buy all this stuff rather than me pushing them to sell me more. There was far more junk (Habro toys especially) than I could ever hope to (or even want to) collect, and it burned me out very quickly. Disappointment in the movie didn't help, either.

If LFL had marketed conservatively at first, and then ramped it up based on demand, I think they would have done far better in the end and earned far more respect. I think they tried to tone it down by the time AOTC and ROTS came out, but it was too little too late by then for many fans.

I just don't see this board here having that level of influence. I think it's perfectly legit to ask BadAssKeith to tone down his whinging for the sake of less obnoxious discourse ... but I find it unfair to ask him or anyone to change their posting style for the sake of some imagined powers-that-be who may or -more likely- may not be reading this message board.
Of course, I quite agree. I'm arguing for the sake of less obnoxious discourse. I really don't expect this site to have much of an impact (if any) on the eventual decisions made by LFL & Co. (even though it appears that they do pay some attention). My main reason for coming here is to take part in conversations on the topics we discuss here in a mature and professional manner, hopefully without having to deal with a bunch of "LUCA$$ = F4G & TEH SUX0RZ!!!11!!1!"

Cardboard Leia
Time
I've never seen the "buns" hairdo look better than on the girl who played opposite the Lucas character in "George Lucas in Love".

I do have to say, though, I really can't stand the thought of mixing adult themes and Star Wars. Star Wars was my childhood, and somehow mixing sexual themes or adult humor into it tarnishes that ideal. I thought Princess Leia was beautiful when I was 7 years old and Star Wars came out, but it was from an innocent child's point of view. I was 10 when Empire came out, and she was still pretty but not quite as beautiful as in the first film. At 13 when Jedi came out, I was definitely having different thoughts about girls... but I didn't want that to apply to Star Wars, metal bikini or not. And I still want to keep it that way.

Fanboys nowadays seem to want to jerk off over anything female in everything they're interested in. Frankly, I think it's pathetic.

Seriously. Chill out on the Lucas bashing, and find some new topics to post on.

We already know we're all unhappy with the way Star Wars has been handled since the 1997 Special Editions. That's a given. It's a lot of wasted words and hot air lambasting and slandering George Lucas and Lucasfilm over and over for the same old things. That's really not what this site and this forum is about. Sure, we all gripe and complain about the things we don't like, but it's not the basis of our existence here. I'd like to think this site is about solutions, rather than problems. Our goal is to push for the official release of the OOT in a decent format, and until that happens we work on our own solutions to the problem.

We'd like to have your input. But destructive criticism doesn't help anybody, and makes us all look bad in the process. Don't make the sole purpose of your being here consist of telling everyone how much of a cretin you think Lucas is. Contribute some constructive and/or creative posts instead, and we'll be interested in reading and responding to them.

Star Wars isn't the only one...
Time
I spent many, many exciting hours playing DooM back in the day, alone or with friends. Tons of fun. Nowadays I run The Ultimate DooM because it works well on my current system. The add-on level is just an optional bonus to me.

There is another game that's a big favorite of mine that actually saw release a couple years back as a Special Edition of sorts. It's called "Bad Mojo", aka "The Cockroach Game". You play the whole game as a cockroach, seeing everything from a cockroach's point of view. There's nothing else like it. I bought it back when it originally came out in 1996, and though I loved the game, I was always unhappy with the quality of the video cut scene segments. They were state-of-the-art for the time (using QuickTime 2.0 or something), which wasn't very good. Years later I had a really hard time getting the game to run well under Windows XP, but I put a lot of work into it and was able find a way to get it working. Then I found out they released "Bad Mojo Redux" in 2004, with enhanced graphics and video scenes that had been re-encoded to play full-screen and look tons better. It also included a DVD with bonus material and info on how the game was made. I bought it ASAP, and was extremely pleased with it. It looks great and runs like it should, and you no longer have to install an ancient version of QuickTime to make it work.

This is an example of a Special Edition release done well. Nothing was added to the original, nothing was taken away, nothing in essence was CHANGED... it was just made to look better than it originally did when it was first released.

This is what should have happened with Star Wars.

That does look pretty good. Can't say for sure if it's the Centropy verson or not, but it's at least close if not.

Here are the Centropy version screenshots.

Apparently the Centropy copy has its own logo at the beginning of the film, which should make identification easier.

The real answer:
Assuming it's the theatrical 35mm version and not the theatrical digital version, it's the only known evidence of the changes made between the film version and the digital version. I did some research, and the Centropy version appears to be the best copy out there. Which should answer your question as well, daveytod. Sadly, there seems to be no evidence of any telecine copies of this particular cut of the film that I can find.

(I've got the timecoded version, but I never grabbed the Centropy version. Sorry!)
Timecoded... are you talking about ROTS or AOTC here? I've never heard of a timecoded AOTC in public hands, but we've heard plenty about the ROTS one.

Anyone who has the Centropy telesync of Attack Of The Clones, please PM me. It was originally a 3xVCD release that showed up shortly after the film was in theaters. Most people probably had no reason to keep it around after the real DVD came out.

I will post links to screenshots of this version here later tonight.

OOTCon
Time
I actually did organize a private screening of the OOT quite a few years back, around 1995 after the "Faces" set had come out. A friend of mine was in charge of a small, two-screen theater in downtown Portland, OR that was part of our college campus. We gathered a few friends by word-of-mouth, and used the video projector in the theater to show the entire trilogy in widescreen, using my newly-purchased letterboxed "Faces" videotapes. We even showed the Holiday Special inbetween Star Wars and Empire, which at that point almost nobody had seen oustside of the few who'd caught it in 1978.

This was a very memorable event for me, especially since I'd never before had the chance to:
A. see the trilogy in a theater before (my family didn't go to theaters most of the time I was growing up), and:
B. see the trilogy in widescreen, prior to picking up the "Faces" set.

Good times.

Indeed; I was pleased to be able to procure a torrented copy. Quality is horrible, but I never thought I'd see it in the first place! It's funnier than people have made it out to be, but it's also pretty painfully bad. Worth seeing once, at least.

There is a low-quality copy of it on YouTube as well. Try a search.

any plans here for the 30th anniversary?
Time
I'm planning on being there for Celebration 4 for sure, as part of my celebration of the 30th anniversary. At this point, it's more about seeing old friends and meeting new ones, although I always enjoy the events as well. This time I hope to meet a few of you, if I can.

There's another unrelated big event (for me) going on in my city at the same exact time as C4, unfortunately. It's something I really didn't want to miss. But I have my priorities. Star Wars was my first and fondest interest, so C4 it is. The sacrifice has to be made.

The year after the 30th anniversary of Star Wars marks another anniversary that I'll be celebrating. However, I expect to have very little company for this one. 2008 will be the 30th anniversary of The Star Wars Holiday Special. I guarantee I will be cooking some things up for that particular milestone!

'Heil Honey I'm Home' (tv series) (1st episode released)
Time

“Heil Honey I’m Home” was a very short-lived 1990 British TV series featuring Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun in a 1950s suburban setting where they attempt to co-exist with their Jewish neighbors, the Goldensteins. Hilarity ensues. Somehow the show was actually greenlit and managed to air one episode before being pulled off the air. There were a total of 8 episodes produced, but the remaining 7 were never shown.

More details here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heil_Honey_I’m_Home!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/articles/h/heilhoneyimhome__1299003509.shtml

and here:

Anybody actually have a copy of any of the episodes from this exercise in extreme political wrongness?

Might be useful for de-SE projects, but it's not my first choice for standalone viewing.
Yes, it might be possible to get some high-quality segments out of it. Still worth preserving.

Info Wanted: anyone doing an AOTC - IMAX Edit (?)
Time
Originally posted by: TheCassidy
Well, the theatrical bootleg would be of value in terms of sourcing original dialogue (ie: Padme's "Uh-huh" or whatever it was originally) if there were no better source. Was AOTC ever released in its' theatrical form on VHS like TPM, or on a Japanese laserdisc? Unfortunately not; there doesn't seem to be any real source for the original 35mm theatrical version of AOTC.

The reason for this seems to be this:

The 35mm would have been finished first, but then some changes were made after that for the digital theatrical version. Both hit the theaters at the same time. However, any subsequent release (VHS, laserdisc, TV, and... IMAX) would have been done using the "newer" digital theatrical version, since that would now be considered the definitive version. So the 35mm version never had a chance to appear in any other format before it was changed for good.

At the every least, a comprehensive "watch through" of the original theatrical cut would be in order just to see how many things were actually altered for the Official DVD.
That's definitely of value. At the moment, it seems all we have to go by are dodgy camcorder copies.

Only question is, was the IMAX cut taken from the 35mm version, or the DLP version?
See above; it was almost certainly taken from the DLP version since it came out later. I saw it, but unfortunately my memory fails me.

Info Wanted: Which version is this?
Time
Sounds like they're possibly all Asian bootlegs. The first two have extras from the Definitive Collection laserdiscs. But again, screenshots of the menus will definitely help to positively ID them.

I can tell you that they're going to be very poor quality compared to the September DVDs, though. In fact, all the Asian bootlegs are pretty dismal even compared to more recent fan preservations. But no fan preservation outside of maybe the X0 project has a chance of even coming close to the picture quality on the upcoming DVDs (despite that set's appalling lack of anamophic capability), because that transfer will be off an original laserdisc master that none of us have access to. The fan preservations do make up for that in other ways, though.
