How do you watch the Star Wars Saga?
Time
Before each episode of the prequels came out, I would watch all of the movies I had just prior to seeing the new film in the theater. Now that all the films are out, I tend to just sit down and watch particular scenes. I find am more inclined to watch the OOT all the way through than I am the prequels, though. But these days, with the random access of DVDs, I often just watch certain portions of all the films... and the Holiday Special.

The terminology may have been different, but the sentiment was the same. We were looked down upon as "Star Wars geeks" back then. I was 7 when Star Wars came out. EVERYONE in my school was into it then. By some time after Empire came out, mainstream enthusiasm began to fade, people moved on to other things, and it came down to the fanatics. I was one of the last fanatics left, and I did get crap for it. But it wasn't so much a "you're a Star Wars geek" type of treatment as it was an attitude of "Star Wars isn't cool anymore; we're into Dukes Of Hazzard now" or whatever. To my eternal shame, I do remember finally telling people I didn't care about Star Wars anymore just so they'd quit bugging me about it. In truth, I still did care about Star Wars--I just didn't care to talk about it anymore. Certain point of view, you know.

I don't know if anyone ever said it to your face, but I had it said to mine.
By the time I was in junior high/high school, I was well and truly a "stealth fan". I loved it as much as ever, but I didn't have anyone to talk about it with anymore. So nobody knew I was a Star Wars fan. I suppose if I wore it on my sleeve every day, I'd have been called a geek for it. As it was, I got called a geek and a nerd for other things.

To tell you the truth, they had a point.

I rember the old saying that the difference between Star Wars Geeks and Star Trek Geeks was Star Wars geeks got laid.

Of course I can't corroborate that theory.
There may actually be some truth to that. Since nearly everyone liked Star Wars at least a little at one point, girls were more likely to say "Oh, you like Star Wars? Yeah, those movies were a lot of fun!" Hence more likely to lead to action in the bedroom at some point. But with Star Trek it would be more like "You're into Star Trek?! LEPER!!!"

I just have to call you on this, Go-Mer. I was there too when the films originally came out. Nobody ever called Star Wars fans "fanboys" back then. In fact, the term "fanboy" wasn't even in use until much later. The earliest documented usage was in 1982, according to Wikipedia, and referred to comic book collectors--and it was obscure at that point. The term didn't even achieve common usage until much later... I'm going to say the mid to late 90s. I never heard it commonly used until then, in reference to anime and comic book geeks, and only recently has it been applied particularly to Star Wars fans.

As far as the term "Star Wars geek" is concerned, I don't buy that being used back then either. That's something I never heard people say. There were "Trekkies" back then, but there was no term for people who just liked Star Wars, because that was nearly everybody. Sure, you had generic "nerds", and "geeks" a bit later on, but whether or not they liked Star Wars was irrelevant. It wasn't until the 90s Star Wars revival that tons of people started commonly collecting anything with the Star Wars name on it, dressing in Star Wars costumes, and waiting in big lines for the movies that there started to emerge a common perception of the "Star Wars geek".

I am willing to admit that it's possible things were a little different in your particular region, but I really think you're totally retconning here (to use a fanboy/geek term) and trying to change history, kind of like Uncle George likes to do.

I had better get a copy asap! Off to play.com I think.

And a BIG thanks for the heads up.

You did get the outtake Ewok footage from Return Of The Ewok, didn't you?

There's some cut scene material in there.

The way the vote has fallen so far is completely as I would expect for this group. Star Wars in first, with Empire a close second. 1 vote for TPM (Go-Mer, I presume ), and no votes for the other prequels.

I voted for Star Wars, of course... that's the one that I feel if no other Star Wars films existed, it would still be everything Star Wars is to me in a nutshell.

Interesting tidbit about who shot first

Okay, and when the controversy started, wasn't it about how this alteration "changed Han Solo's character"? I don't speak for anyone else, but my main complaint when I saw this change in the SE was that it looked absolutely stupid and unconvincing.

I don't think anyone had any doubt that Han shot Greedo in the original version without Greedo getting a shot off at all. I'm not saying Greedo originaly shot first and not everyone noticed, I'm saying it's entirely possible that Lucas originally wanted Greedo to shoot first, but didn't get the right shot for the original version of the movie and then just made sure it was clear that the plan was to kill Han so it would still be a clear case of self-defense, as he says is the case. I understand, but I don't buy it. Nor do I buy what Lucas says about it now, because it has been made abundantly clear that he changes his version of history constantly (both in his films and in real life, in fact). I still love the guy, but damn... I wish he wasn't so obsessed with "improving" the past.

I don't think everyone realized that Han was going to be killed if he hadn't shot Greedo. Not everyone pays attention to subtitles in a movie like this.
It's hard for me to picture anyone not realizing this. I had zero doubt from the very beginning that Han's life was in grave danger.

By the way I'm 35.
I stand corrected then. I thought I'd seen you say that you were too young to have seen the films when they came out, but it must have been someone else.

There were plenty of games not like that released around that time.
But you have to admit the market (particularly the Nintendo market) was flooded with games of that type back then.

I'm more of an adventure gamer, myself. I always liked games where you have a chance to explore and discover, rather than games where your finger is constantly on the "kill, kill, kill" button.

I miss Infocom games, and wish something equivalent would come along for the modern age.

Not ALL fans do, as you can plainly see above.

I do own the PT, but the inferiority of those films to the originals saddens me. I continue to watch particular parts of each of them, but I find I'm not often inclined to sit down and watch them in their entirety.

It's not very widely known, but there was actually a port of Super Star Wars for the PC done by a European game design group for Lucasarts, complete with Lucasarts opening logo. However, Lucasarts decided not to use it, so it was shelved--even though it was pretty much completed. The game is out there and can be found if you dig for it. The graphics are very nice for the time.

Go-Mer, I believe you weren't around in the beginning to witness it, but what I think is interesting is that this was never even an issue prior to the SEs coming out in 1997. I never once heard anyone doubt who shot and who didn't, or whether or not Han was a "cold-blooded killer". It made sense back then. Only after 1997 was the controversy created.

The best way to tell is usually by checking for the station ID during the cartoon segment (see the link to my site that auximenies gave above for details). If there is no station ID, it may be the New York WCBS version, which only showed the ID during commercial breaks.

The picture there looks fairly sharp compared to most, but the color is absolutely horrible (the reds in particular). I don't think I've seen one that looked quite like that. If you find you can't identify it by my list, let me know and I'll help you out.

Info Wanted: Battlestar Galactica: Second Coming - Richard Hatch's trailer
Time

Has anybody out there managed to get their hands on the BSG trailer that Richard Hatch did back when he was lobbying for a sequel to the original series BSG?

I know that at the time it was kept strictly under wraps since there was the remote chance somebody might have wanted to pick it up, but now with the new (and surprisingly very good) series already up to the third season and Hatch himself on the show in a guest star role, that point is kind of moot.

I managed to dig up some very short test footage clips, but that’s all I’ve ever seen of it. I never got to see it at a convention.

I don't have the audio but a loan of your tape would be great, unless you can transfer it for me?
I am unable to do a full transfer of the tape, but I'll see what I can do with the audio. Otherwise, I'll be happy to loan it out for the project with confidence that it will be in good hands, and that you'll send it back when you have what you need.

It will have the burned in Japanese subtitles. I'll be releasing it as the Japanese edition.

But...

If you ask me, based on Lucasfilm's recent releases and the fact that next year is the 30th anniversary, I have a feeling we'll see a 'Vintage Collection' release of all of the classic documentaries.
One can only hope. I'll be a happy camper if that is the case, that's for sure.

Nice, A new transfer of the Making of Star Wars laserdisc is long overdue. Could I suggest having 2 audio tracks on this? The Sci-Fi Channel version has a different narrator than the laserdisc release. It would be cool to have both in one spot.
Agreed; I'd like to see this as well. It's something that has been missing on all transfers to far. It was William Conrad that narrated the original one, but no one seems to know who the newer narrator was for the 1995 version. I assume some kind of royalty issues with using Conrad's voice (too expensive, maybe?) caused the new voiceover to be created.

babyhum, do you have a source for the alternate 1995 audio? I do happen to have that tape (actually ordered it through the cereal box offer back then). It's in NTSC format (was this version ever released in PAL?), and in very good shape, having only been played a few times. I'd be willing to loan it out "for the cause" if need be.

And these new transfers I assume will also have the burned-in Japanese subtitles. I guess we have to make that sacrifice for the sake of best quality. I'd still love to see someone custom matte out the subtitles using a subtitle-less transfer, though.

EDIT: Looks like you do need a source for the audio. As far as I know, the cereal box mail-away offer VHS tape in NTSC format is the only source for this alternate audio (someone please correct me if they know differently!). And as far as I know I may be the best source for this, so PM me with your address and such and I'll see about digging out that tape.

Really, though, arent the commercials kind of relative? The HS was shown on stations all over the country. Wouldn't they have different commercials with each showing?
There was a core set of commercials that were the same for all broadcasts in the US, and then spaces left for "local programming" type commercials. This included car dealerships and trailers for films promoted by local cinemas.

Here's the breakdown for all the commercials aired during the Holiday Special:

(after Saun Dann's shop)
- General Motors: People Building Transportation To Serve People
- Kenner Trailtracker

(after stormtroopers show up)
- CBS: 60 Minutes/All In The Family/Alice/Lucy Comes To Nashville/Dallas promo
- SWHS bumper
- Comtrex cold reliever
- ILGWU: International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union
- Bell: Be Choosey
- SWHS bumper
- CBS: The Bible promo
- [local spots]

(after "What is it now?")
- General Motors: People Building Transportation To Serve People (#2)
- Pilsbury Plus Yellow Cake
- Hungry Jack Buttermilk Flaky Biscuits
- SWHS bumper
- CBS News Newsbreak / Contac
- CBS: Bobby Vinton's Rock 'n Rollers
- CBS station ID
- [local spots]

(after Dromboid segment)
- Schaper: Tobor the Sonic Robot
- Revlon Cream-On Blush
- Whirlpool: Made In USA

(after stormtrooper comes up behind Lumpy)
- Anacin: Safety With Extra Strength
- Woolite: Clothes That Deserve A Second Look Deserve Woolite
- Sheer Indulgence panty hose
- McDonalds: There's More In The Middle Of An Egg McMuffin
- SWHS bumper
- CBS: Flying High promo
- CBS station ID
- [local spots]

(after Wookiees go into the light)
- FTD: Those FTD Florists Really Get Around
- Fruit Of The Loom: A Great Buy In Briefs
- Bell System: Long Distance Is The Next Best Thing To Being There
- No Nonsense panty hose

(after Chewie's flashback)
- Twice As Fresh air freshener
- Kenner Star Wars Collection
- Colony Wine: Impress Yourself With Colony

(after credits)
- voiceover promo for Flying High
- Wonder Woman/Incredible Hulk promo

There you have it. I may do an article on the commercials in the future on starwarsholidayspecial.com.

Not as good as the KCCI edition, but worthy of preserving for the fact that the commercials are intact. Basically, the commercials are more important there than the quality of the whole show.
