Info & Help: looking for... 'Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming'
Time
I managed to find some timecoded outtakes from this, but that's all I've ever seen. I never got to see the trailer proper. Since the Galactica revival as both Richard Hatch and Brian Singer envisioned it is moot now (I don't think the original series will ever be brought back, since the new one is considered far superior--and with good reason), I hope somebody finds a way for Hatch's trailer to be released.

I would say that Lucasfilm does not seem to be trying as hard to bury the Holiday Special lately. In fact, they seem to be referencing it more and more. There are numerous stills from the HS on starwars.com and Hyperspace, and they have shown clips from the cartoon both on the "Bucket Head" documentary (which wound up on the Episode II DVD), and in their Star Wars animation retrospective video that starwars.com hosted a while back.

I just hope it's a sign that they are more open to it now, and maybe we'll see it released someday yet.

Happy 28th anniversary of the darkest moment in Star Wars history!

And no, I don't mean Episode I...

I have added a new section to starwarsholidayspecial.com called Features, where I will be adding articles written about particular aspects of the Holiday Special. The first article is about the Urban Legends of the Star Wars Holiday Special. Check it out through the News section here.

Enjoy. More articles to follow later.

Further investigation is always welcome. However, other than hearsay we have no other leads. Nobody has a recording of it, it seems.

Remember, many "eyewitnesses" claim to have seen the Anchorhead scenes in the film as well... which wasn't possible, since it never even had finished sound.

SKot, I found a few of those things (the videos and a few of the pictures) on your website. I hope you don't mind, I was going to put the web adress in the credits. That would be cool. Many people have taken tons of things from there in the past and not bothered to mention the site even once (in particular a certain Swedish magazine), which is a mystery to me. I'm fully in support of a documentary, so feel free to use anything you wish.

I have not contacted you in the past, and I think it would be awesome to have other people working on it as well, I had no idea there was any interest.
Definitely drop me a line so we can collaborate on info. Use 'skotk', and put that in front of a Hotmail address.

About the deleted scene, the inormation simply said that it was going to be a part of the Nelvana cartoon. As far as I can tell from the version I downloaded, for the dialogue they recorded a guy singing "hot water used for laundering - less than a load of dirty things - HORRIBLE HABITS! - yeah, don't scoff, 'cause wasting electricity turns people...off" and reversed it. Is this correct or is there a different story?
That is correct. The cut piece was a fake animated commercial that was in the spot where a real commercial would be inserted later. Apparently for the audio they took a real 70s Canadian energy conservation commercial and reversed the audio. It's strange sounding either way. There are also intro and outro animation clips included in that sample you saw that are not present as such in the final cartoon either.

Hi, I'm a lurker here, and now that I've finally come up with an interesting project I need a bit of help. I'm working on a documentary about the Holiday Special, from conception to production to today. I've managed to find production stills, concept art, all the clips I need, all the information I need, an animated deleted scene, the tv-land clip, fighting the frizzies, and a fox news clip. Which are all available on my website (starwarsholidayspecial.com) except for the deleted scene clip. I haven't put that one up yet (article forthcoming).

What I'd like from you guys is anything (info, pictures, video) that absolutely must be included in the documentary, or some behind the scenes footage, though I doubt any exists. I especially need a photo of Steve Binder, I've looked everywhere and can't find one. Please post what you have here if appropriate or e-mail anything to me at llamamanz57 AT yahoo DOT com. Thanks in advance.
Have you contacted me in the past? If not, you should. There are at least a couple of people who have said they want to work on a documentary on the Holiday Special. I'm all for it.

I showed Skot this months ago, but a TV ad for the Holiday Special definitely turned up on Youtube. It advertised the special, as well as a show called Flying High.

Weirdly, now that I've posted this, I can't find the damn thing. Doesn't show up in a search for the Star Wars Holiday Special.

EDIT: Yep. Thank you Google caching. "This video has been removed at the request of copyright owner CBS Corporation because its content was used without permission"

2241 views before it was taken down. Yes indeed... mighty CBS, in all their wisdom, gave it the axe. I'm wondering if it was more due to copyright infringement or embarrassment?

I did a little checking into that as well. CBS actually regretted the decision to take those spots down, after they'd wised up and decided to partner with YouTube rather than fight with them. Check out this quote from CBS about it from the Wikipedia page on YouTube:

"Our inclination now is, the more exposure we get from clips like that, the better it is for CBS News and the CBS television network, so in retrospect we probably should have embraced the exposure, and embraced the attention it was bringing CBS, instead of being parochial and saying ‘let’s pull it down.’"

Quick change of tune, eh? Maybe they'll think twice about being so hasty next time.

The video was posted by user 8traxrule. You can PM him over at youtube.

He wrote: "Found this on a tape of the "Hawaii Five-O" that aired the night before (11/16/78). Wish I could find a copy of the special that looks this good. Did anyone tape the "Flying High" show that came on afterwards? ..."
I was in touch with 8traxrule previously, but lost touch after the spots got pulled. I'm trying to get hold of him again, but have not had much luck so far.

I'm thinking that wasting electricity turns people off.

I'm thinking I might be the first to say that it's good to see you here again. In the Star Wars ghetto, I mean.

Well, don't get me wrong--I don't want to discourage you from remaking it, hopefully in better quality. Just wanted to make sure you knew the real thing is out there.

A good thing, too... otherwise we'd never have real historical record of the changes made. Unfortunately, something in similar quality doesn't seem to exist for the theatrical AOTC, and we have no way whatsoever of seeing the IMAX edit again.

Hello, A while back I was trying to create a passable version of the diagonal cut left out of the DVD version of ROTS. I think I did a decent job using only the DVD as a source and the old TC Xvid’s as a reference. It should be very easy to recut back into the film using the retail DVD and a frame accurate cutting program like cuttermaran. Please let me know what you think of this.

Actually, there’s no need to recreate this wipe… digital copies of the theatrical version are out there in good quality.

My girlfriend has never seen Star Wars!

So the other night I was checking the GOUT ESB, and she's like "what's this?". I thought she was f#*$ing with me. But we came to the conclusion that she had never seen ESB. I'm pretty disappointed that I've been explaining how Luke is Anakin's son every time she asks about the other movies (even though the whole last name thing is there, she doesn't pay real close attention), but I'm still excited for her to see the best SW movie last.
So I guess the question is, then, has she seen Return Of The Jedi?

This was actually done on the "remastered" version: they took the credits and used John Williams' soundtrack music to get rid of the announcer. I didn't even notice it right away; it was done pretty well. However, I don't think it was exactly the same recording, so it's not the most accurate representation. A better trick would be to take one of the international versions from France, Sweden, or Australia and use the audio from the credits there, where there is no CBS announcer present.

As far as covering up the network logo goes: this could be done, if someone really thought it was worth the trouble. I can live with the logo, myself.

Star Wars film versions and best DVD sources
Time
*bump*

Slight update to incorporate the [G]OUT DVD releases into the list, now replacing the various laserdisc transfers as the best source (so far) for that version.

Exception made for the original Star Wars: the [G]OUT DVD release of that is more of a simulated 1977 version than a real one, due to it being a composite of the 1981 and 1977 versions.

MODS: Can we sticky this thread for the "Theatrical Cuts vs. Special Editions" topic?

So recently, I've been reading about a "remastered" version. How does it compare to the KCCI version?
The version that was called "remastered" (technically it was cleaned up a bit but not remastered) is inferior to the KCCI version, most noticeably in color, but also because it was edited to cover up missing or damaged footage at the beginning of the tape. Prior to the KCCI version's discovery it was the best quality version available.

I think calling it "remastered" was mostly wishful thinking on the part of the person(s) distributing it.

Like clockwork!

But seriously, Go-Mer... you're generally okay with me, even if I don't usually agree with you, but I think every single person here has heard your side of the argument by now. Maybe it's time to put it aside, move on, and focus on some other aspects.

You'll have to bite your tongue instead of jerking your knee every time the button is pushed, but it can be done--trust me.

This is not a fight that you can win, so why not try posting something more constructive and interesting than the same old rebuttals to every single post in every single thread?

I'd like to see it. I really would.

.....and it sure beats the line that was originally scripted:

LEIA: I love you.

HAN: I love you too.
I agree with you here. But I think that to make it even better, the line should have been mirrored during the unthawing scene in ROTJ. Han realizes who it is who has freed him, and says:

HAN: I love you.

LEIA: I know.

Then they kiss. That would have been awesome.

Any ideas how much potential gain there be from combining various different versions of holiday special together with some sort of fame averaging?
This is assuming that the various sources could be alligned to match eachother.

And by extension could comibing audio from different version yield a better audio track? Is there such a thing as 'audio average' different sources together?
I like the idea, but I think part of the problem is that the KCCI version is so much better than any other source in terms of quality that it seems unlikely there would be much, if anything, to gain from even bringing one of the other copies into the mix.

The other problem most likely is finding someone with both the skills and the inclination to work on such a project. I might have the inclination, but certainly not the skills required.

But I don't want to discourage anyone else who might be so skillfully inclined.
