If you've done this on VHS, the inside Betamax isn't that different. There shouldn't be any problem transferring the tape to another shell. In fact, the piece you say is broken inside may not be. It may just need to be put back in its place.
I don't know the station ID from the station it was recorded, but the Holiday Special I sent you has a pic of the wookie family on it with the following text in the main menu:
The 1978 Holiday Special >PLAY MOVIE Boba Fett Cartoon Excerpt >PLAY CARTOON Attack of the Clones >PLAY TRAILER Kenner Toys Ad >PLAY COMMERCIAL
I had been searching for a few years for the best quality version possible. A few months ago I sent Rikter a disc of the best one I have ever found. I think he made it into his latest Angrysun edition, but I'm not sure. Rik?

Bought it on EBay and it stated that it was the ORIGINAL theatrical release.........so why does it say Star Wars IV A New Hope in the intro. It looks like a burn from the LD. I'm just trying to make sure I got the original and not the CGI molested version. Thanks
Except for the opening crawl, it is the original theatrical cut. The EditDroid version of Star Wars has a VERY NICE recreation of this opening crawl without the Ep. IV stuff. It's edited seamlessly into the movie.
That is different to the version I have heard about that has no menus.
Any chance of some menu screenshots??
I don't have a way of posting screenshots at the moment. They're pretty basic using still captures from the film for the menu pages and a little footage for some of the transitions similar to the Isomix, but it is a nice touch if the original Farsight had no menus. I only have SW so this may be a second party job. I also just noticed that this transfer is anamorphic. That's a plus.
The 5 Star Collection is dual-layered. If you were to shrink them to a single layered DVD, I'd suggest doing a movie only version for best quality. You can cut out the menus, trailers, and even lose the fake (and poor sounding) DTS tracks that take up a lot of space. Also, ROTJ has a 30 minute documentary on it in addition to the trailer which takes up space, too.

I never heard of this version.
Don't bother I had a set for about a week and sold it, the video quality of ROTJ is a joke.
Yeah. Myself and a few others reviewed this one quite a while ago. I spoke with Kristhemovieman and he said that he setup a great master and the people who actually manufactured the pressed discs screwed it up. Too bad. Pretty good presentation, but the video is soft and has some interlacing problems.
The Leia welding footage is intact. This is a GREAT disc. In fact, all three of them are. Now, if I can just get the DVD-ROM content for ROTJ they would be practically perfect.
Originally posted by: klokwerk Rikter, I can't help you with those, but I am curious: What's in the content folders for the EditDroid ESB & ROTJ, do you know? Couldn't you get them from the creator of the set?
There may not be any DVD-ROM content for the EditDroid ESB. I say this because both ANH and ROTJ have specific menu pages indicating what DVD-ROM content the disc contains. ESB has no such page.
I should have said, "The SW laserdiscs I have owned do not have any artificial fades..." I have only the letterboxed editions. Couldn't say on any of the early pan and scan editions.
The SW laserdiscs do not include any artificial fades that were not present in the original films, just straight cuts to black at a scene change. This makes it easy to cut the side changes together. I know what you're talking about, though. Universal used to put artificial fades at the side changes of their laserdiscs. I always hated that.
Yes. WOW! and Soundtrack! are the only things on the THX laserdisc demo. I actually put them on the Empire Strikes Back bonus disc that I created for the TR47/ RowMan Re-mix. I'm currently creating similiar (but not the same) bonus discs for the new EditDroid trilogy. WOW! and Soundtrack! will be featured on my new bonus disc for Return of the Jedi as they are more from that era.
Unfortunately, IMDB has it wrong. Here is a quote from the insert of the Criterion Collection Close Encounters insert...
"This laserdisc presents the original edition of Close Encounters of the Third Kind with one shot from the Special Edition that was included at Mr. Spielberg's request (side 1, chapter 8, frames 33962 - 34118)."
So it's the original cut with the Special Edition scenes at the ends of their respective disc sides. One has the choice of watching the original cut straight through or programming the laserdisc player to insert the Special Edition scenes at the appropriate times.
I have this Criterion laserdisc set and have tentative plans to transfer the "original" cut to DVD in the near future with a second disc that will include all of the supplementary material.
From what I gather, the film was a rushed production and Spielberg did not like the '77 cut. The studio allowed him to recut/ refine the film only if he added the scenes of inside the mothership to the ending. It seems that "Spielberg's cut" would be the Special Edition sans the "inside the mothership" ending.
I believe you're looking for the "THX enhanced" versions that were made available on laserdisc and VHS in 1995. This is also called the "Faces" set because of the coverart. People on this board are making (or have made) DVDs using the Faces laserdiscs as the source. Check out the Original Trilogy Preservation threads.
...So I'm thinking.... Why would someone who made a disc only for himself, as the creator of this set claims he did, put an easter egg like this in his creation? Bottomline, after seing the second disc of the set, I don't get the impression that these two discs belong to the same set. Any comments?
Back when I was making VCDs with menus, I often put little extra bits as easter eggs on them. It's just a fun thing to do. I enjoyed getting phone calls from friends when they discovered them.
As far as the EditDroid menus, I think they're all from the same creator(s). The graphics may not be the same, but the layouts are pretty similiar. Maybe they were just trying out new things after the SW DVD.
