The flash is there. Like i said before it has just been re-composited for the SE's, but it IS there and it lasts for the same number of frames. From left to right; Original (same as your VHS), Blu-Ray & Revisited:

http://i.imgur.com/kNoF4Kh.jpg" width="631" height="497" />

The original though is a lot more pronounced and the white blotch works better than the yellow tinted one in the SE. But the background is darker in the original so if the blotch was white in the BD it may not look exactly the same.

It's also a different size and shape.

But I think it looks better in the original without the yellow tint and is a lot more noticeable to the viewer. The SE although clearer in picture has Bleeched out the effect.

Perhaps the sky is too bright in the BD in this shot?

It's a similar problem in the asteroid field chase (and throught the movie) all the Blue Haze in the starfield has been washed out and the tint to the stars (although perhaps considred bad) looked better.

The colors are totally wrong in the last image but it shows up the amount of blue in the black on the right of the picture.

It's a shame that all the color got washed out of the starfield along with the subtle blue haze.

I think the revisited asteroid chase is brilliant with the additional asteroids but because the stars are white they get lost in amongst the distant asteroids in some shots.

Re adding the Blue tint and Haze would also fix this and stay truer to the original. It might even give the shots further depth.

But perhaps not with the large stars shown in this image as amn example. The planet Hoth reflection could also account for the change in coloration in the immediate area of dust but this example image is also too blue but it gets the point over reasonably.

This is perhaps the best example of the damage that has been done to the Look of the film.

Perfectly straight aura around a planet it looks so incredibly unnatural and fake when although the shot looks better by removing the matte lines it lost it's realism totally. You would expect a more or less straight aura at a distance but this close to the planet The original film is more correct and looks better and less harsh.

A quick Mock up using a revisited still trying to replicate a GOUT starfield

I managed to pick up a 1997 DVD this weekend of ESB

I only skimmed over it but a few things I noticed straight off the Bat.

1.The AT-AT Binocular shot reveal seems to be much cleaner than the Special edition version and there is more definition in it.

2. As we said earlier on the page the Dish shooting the AT-AT Leg is better in the 1997 DVD and the shield generator getting hit is mildly clearer also.

3. Blue tinted stars during the asteroid field chase sequence really give the sequence something.. Although probably considered bad I really thought this was the best way I have seen it look in terms of atmosphere. I wonder if it was intentional but I doubt it. I started thinking of dust haze that could make the tint to the stars plausible.

I think if this look could be recaptured.. Perhaps this was the intention? but this is the main thing I took away after seeing the film.

Asteroid canyon also looked better too just slightly.

4. The music cues on Cloud city with the cloud car fly through removed are better than the special edition

5. Not listed on any SE change list when Lando, Leia etal are trying to escape cloud city the Special edition added "Look out" "Behind us"" audio for the crowd. Please use the GOUT audio on this one. But I still think it cut's off too quick when we cut to Chewie and R2 with the storm trooper in pursuit.

This is just some brief opinions after watching that really stood out to me that I wanted to share.

Not Bad monroville...

I was kinda thinking like this but a quake / crack because in the next scene we see Han and Leia blocked by a large chunk of ice falling.

So note the ice crack effects 0:38 without the upward explosions from the cracks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOGG-WsGXAY

Sorry I know it's a cheesy film but this effect would be great I think shooting off in a couple of directions.

Perhaps a good re-framing of the scene by an artist.

Something about this image put's the idea in my mind of bringing the shot before where we see the AT-AT hit a troop with the side guns and then fire the under chin shot for the destruction looking back from the shield generator. perhaps the Under the chin guns could be re-timed to fire that small fraction of a second sooner

Then this frees up the next shot of the explosion entirely and center of screen. The Shot and Impact are on the same shot and we as viewers are positioned right beside the shield generator when it get's hit.

This would mean bringing the shield generator a lot closer in previous shots so the AT-AT's fire from a shorter distance but I don't think that would be such a Bad thing.

The whole sequence is all quite random shots what with the snowspeeder crashing on exactly the same background as the shield generator destruction scene and placement of AT-AT's we are shown 3 together then we are shown AT'AT's on their own god only knows how this mess can be sorted out.

But being in there with the impact next to the shield generator and then cutting back to a full on center of screen destruction if possible I think is the way to go.

And there is another way to see it too. from this image I found I got to this mock-up of a re-frame.

Just ideas really but I like the sense of scale being brought forward and it's a shame we never followed up the rear of the AT-AT's pushing forward.

I never thought of them like this to be honest but this was brought up before.

I thought the dish should take down an AT-ST when we first saw their inclusion but some more pronounced effect on hitting an AT-AT leg would help it look better.

I have a question about the shield generator explosion.

If the original explosion was in the vivaldi trailer why was the explosion not put in the film?

I think that it would be great if you could get somone profficient or even very skilled with these visual effects plug in's like fume fx but looking at the shot i think most green screen explosion effects would still be an improvement but the issue is the same explosion across 2 shots at different angles which is why you have to do it this way.

But i have a suggestion for the explosion of the shield generator once hit the ice should start to crack outwards and fracture around it's base along the ground that would be a nice effect i think.

Hmmm,

Have you thought about blowing up your model using pyrotechnics?

They are relatively cheap but you would need to have someone who knew what they were doing to get the right effect and to be safe also.

But this is another option you could look in to perhaps.

I have fired pyrotechnics on a couple of occasions... But the law is a lot more strict now with things of this nature but they are not that complicated but I would advise you to speak to local Lighting Stage supplier could help you on this but money is the problem with this stuff I understand.

Try this dude

Not scrutinizing I said it a couple of pages back that we are all jumping the gun on temp audio but I wanted to try and identify what It might be about the "three" that makes it sound off. And in conclusion I think it is only the pitch of the sample.

Sorry just trying to be helpful

Steady Rogue three audio edit.

http://www.mediafire.com/listen/6xjhc1d07d5ck34/steady%2520rogue%2520three%2520pitch.mp3

Lowered the pitch of the "three" down by 0.53 in Audacity it obviously screws with the music pitch also in this rough example but It might make the tone of the voice a bit better?

I think the actual line in the clip is very close to being all the way there but I think a pitch down slightly would help the "three" audio sample fit more smoothly with the previous voice sample and be more similar to the "two" we are all familiar with.

I had an idea today about re-authoring the DVD chapter titles and where possible use official canon titles that read better and are more inspiring here is an example of something I threw together quickly.

1 Opening Logos >>> Opening Logos / Prologue
2 The Empire Strikes Back >>> The Empire Strikes Back
3 Ice Planet Hoth >>> Ice Planet Hoth
4 The Rebel Base >>> The Rebel Base
5 Escape From The Wampa >>> The Wampa's Lair

35 Meeting Lando >>> Lando's Palace
36 Leaving Dagobah >>> Leaving Dagobah
37 Leia's Concerns >>> Leia's Concerns
38 Imperial Surprise >>> Betrayal at Bespin
39 The Deal Gets Worse >>> Deal with the Dark Lord
40 Carbon-Freeze >>> Carbon-Freeze
41 Luke Enters The Trap >>> The Trap
42 Confronting The Dark Lord >>> Confronting The Dark Lord / Vader
43 Lando's Second Surprise >>> Lando's Dilemma
44 Lightsaber Duel >>> The Clash of the Lightsabres
45 Escape From Cloud City >>> Escape From Cloud City
46 Vader's Revelation >>> Vader's Revelation
47 Falcon To The Rescue >>> Falcon To The Rescue
48 The Empire Closes In >>> The Empire Closes In
49 The Rebel Fleet >>> The Rebel Fleet
50 End Credits >>> End Credits

The original is on the left an edited version on the right. I used the soundtrack the radio drama and a bit of inspiration but I think the actual official chapter list is a bit thrown together and the titles could have been better. Just an idea for further improvement in a DVD authoring sense although it has nothing to do with the actual video. The chapters were conceived later on well after release so I thought this could perhaps do with a makeover and a better use of Chapter titles could be thought up where appropriate.

Just some food for thought and not saying this is what I think it should be but don't know really just thinking of the actual original titles that seem to have been misplaced for sentences characters say more than anything else.

Something I noticed while watching the recent vid...

It seems the side guns on the AT-ATs don't shoot evenly.  Specifically check 0:30 and 0:43 - you will notice the side guns moving, but not shooting.  Should anything be coming out of them (I'm not saying they should be constantly shooting, just when it appears they are being used and aiming at something)?

Also, should Wedge's snow speeder cast a shadow at 1:28 when he's circling around the legs in the high overhead shot?

Good point on the shadow... Thinking about the side gun action in the overhead shot. I would say part of the problem with this is that the trail is too long. Side guns should be short rapid bursts of short trail lasers 1/4 size of main guns (or less) this would really differentiate them and make them make more sense rather than having the same effect as the "under the chin" big guns.

Because the trail is as long as the under the chin guns it shows up the angles a lot more. But the angle is correct the AT-AT just moved it's head.

What I find amazing is that so much has been altered yet we all all talking about really minor stuff it's a testament to the quality of that last clip.

Finally got to watching this on my desktop computer... Like the clip even more now.

Something to note about the clip is that the audio is still temporary even though we are discussing possibilities with Rogue 3 line which I agree with I doubt it will be like that in the final version so we are jumping the gun.

I still think that the base light is too blue / not enough white for the hologram projector though... Although I agree with the base being lit. and new hologram is faultless.

If you take into account a projected image on to a screen of one color the center where the light is more intense and more focused will have a hotspot and the edges faded out slightly with a different color temperature.

so what I mean is can you add a hotspot?

But to be honest it's not a major deal I think the new clip is great and can't wait for more revisited goodness.

You might have better luck using the whole "Steady, Rogue 3" line from the audio drama. The current edit is a bit jarring. Unlike the "Blast it, Wedge" line from ANH, this is two very different deliveries we're talking about.

Just a thought on this I think i actually prefer the newer audio version of the audio edit but the "three" is the only word that needs altering.

how about a "three" from luke as in "3P0"

Perhaps worth a play and i keep thinking about garbage detention center either from star wars or radio drama... Even "steady wedge" wingman buddy would be appropriate "ok wedge....good shooting wedge audio would work perhaps

I think the nicest surprise in that clip is putting in the 2 speeders that swing in front of veers AT-AT windows in the previous shot it really binds the sequence together.

Really a top job I think has been done.... I guess ady means these will be real models filmed for these 2 speeders but I thought they look good anyway.

Absolutely Muddy i think the new clip really helps as you say the continuity and i really like it especially the new cockpit shot so glad that this horrible footage got replaced and i like the audio change to the "rogue 3" line a lot better.

Without being over critical i think the platform light for vaders hologram could be a little more white but i watched it on my phone as i am away at the moment.

And somone on facebook i thought made a good point about Dak and when we cut to luke there is no smoke behind him or any continuing sparks or tail end of sparks.

But Yeah it is massive improvement

don't forget the Dagobah swamp trees ;-)

with so much details added, ESB:R is the new vision of the "special edition"!

yeah and speeder flaps...

On this shot in the canyon obviously the tie fighters don't make it out they get destroyed but i wondered about if a few parts of destroyed tie fighter debris would fly out behind the falcon on fire or something?

But that is perhaps a tall order these ideas are easier to talk about than execute of course the idea came from the tie fighter shooting the rock and the particles... I was thinking of a way to keep that sort of thing going in the sequence

@bluecardinal

I always thought Vader was angry because he failed to convert Luke.

But since reading the script notes that was not the context and it is more about going after the Falcon. Or perhaps it is a bit of both but if it is because it is about going after the Falcon the that is not clear.

That connection between Vader and his next target he was going after was not shown. Vader was meant to say the line "bring my shuttle" after he spotted the falcon.

If you're going to recycle the Death Star anyway, I don't know how planet destruction is one too far.

To blow up a whole planet to put to rest a Lambda Shuttle full of rebels is stupid

The Gas giant Endor has no strategic value and really cannot be given one.

So I'm calling for more Rebel capital ships to bite the dust. It's the only way of showing the terror of the deathstar slowly destroying the Rebels and they must stop it before it destroys them all.

I was speaking in general.

yeah It's not one too far in general the problem is what target?... Don't think i am trying to make out it is a bad idea, it's not, it's perfectly logical in a way but it is also just really awkward configuration to recycle that idea 100%.

I hope you undrrstand what i am trying to say and not be rude.

Yes that was suggested about painting out the shuttle.

Perhaps your right there on the music...But if you "keep bring my shuttle" that is said over different music than "Alert my blah blah blah" I managed to find a sample on DVD active comparisons so I now know where the cues start finally.

At the end of the day I think Ady is not making a bad decision cutting it back to the theatrical version if that is still concrete. It's the script that got me thinking about trying to bridge the time gap of around 4:30 escaping and about 20 seconds to get back to cloud city ok they could have sped back really fast but the idea sprang in from reading the script notes which were a bit fishy.

It also gives Vader a new target to spring his next trap (devious)... Yeah bit of a day dream flamboyant idea but I still think it would have been better than the guff we got in the special editions.

At least the thread is back on topic

Can I ask someone with the Empire Strikes Back making of Book.

What does it say about Lukes Rescue from Cloud city?

like the cut scene with Lando pulling Luke across to the Hatch and stuff.

I noticed the script is a bit different too from the movie. Could anyone shed some brief light on this for me and did they have problems with this sequence?

Budget restrictions?

Just a bit perplexed about the original sequence and then how we ended up with what we got in the movie from Lucus, Kasdan and kershner?

And then it got the wrong treatment in the special edition.
