You mentioned rolling back the Revisited Death Star Plans because of Rogue One. Just wondered if you plan on going back to the pink X-Wing engine glow too.

Yes, the engines are now pink.

Progress on the Wampa;

Started layering the fur onto the mask. A very time consuming task as this has to be done in small sections at a time. I’ll be gluing the fur onto the mask as much as possible and then hair punching the rest to blend in the edges to give a more natural look.

What made you decide to go back to the pink engines?

Rogue One having pink engines, without any excuse of film age or bad color balance. It’s purposeful and undeniable now.

Don’t follow their mistake ☺

Like the planet bespin though I seen a few photos of it like that brown or beige… But in the film it is a Blue planet like hoth and dagobah. Digging the planet color change.

Sorry about different video speed but you can in this instance take your pick of a shot a see how it is differing. It does need a bit more work as a few shots have a bit of blue contrast bleed and I will rectify that. Like I said close to final not quite 100% yet.

I chose to use the promo reel as the dominant reference for this part as I believe the promo reel is the most accurate color reference for the film.

Promo Reel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3rbSkWvyhQ

It has very much been a case of too much red not enough blue as a rule throughout the film. But some shots particularly shots that feature special effects have needed separate color settings possibly as the special effects shots were probably filmed with different cameras or the computer / digital enhancement.

I have tried to really balance the brightness and contrast and saturation and working with sand and sky’s has been really interesting on how to tackle shots with sand and sky. It’s been a learning experience.

Quite a few shots are too bright whilst others are not bright enough so although one of the goals is to sort any contrast issues out in terms of colors bleeding into the image I also have to go back through and lift the contrast to bring back detail after I have removed some of these issues. But that won’t take too long.

Edit.
Noticed the caption “Giza 1928” popping in and out not sure why that is? Actually looks like DNR is making the Super or caption pop in and out it’s not anything I did it’s in the video source so I may have to replace that shot.

Another thing I just noticed… The scenes at the start are in the wrong order. It should have the caption “Gizah 1928” and then the shot of the car driving past the camels with the pyramids in the background. As it currently stands in the film the car drives past the camels and then we cut to the car approaching the camels going back in time… I don’t think this is one of those time travel scenes is it? 😃

I’ll write a change list for this section.

  1. Rearrange scenes in correct order at the start and replace shot from another source with caption “Giza 1928”
  2. Replace sound of modern car horn honking with old fashioned car horn honking
  3. Add extra shot of Stargate being lifted from Promo reel & Stargate only lifts in to upright position once
  4. Add extended pan in on Annubis Guard Fossil
  5. Further Color work.

That is probably all for this part.

Well a quick update I have done color correction on all but the last 2 chapters of the film. I won’t say it is final yet but close and have done second pass on many parts that needed it in a hope I can go straight to final for the last 2 chapters… I am pleased with the results and really I want to make it look the best I can. But after I have corrected the final 2 chapters. The main concentration at this point will shift to the deleted material and integrating it into the timeline.

This could be fairly slow going but I am sure some shots will fall in quick and easily. It is the sheer amount of small snippets and extended sequences so it will be fairly time consuming I feel and may I also add a re-arranged timeline back in to a correct chronological order of events.

But I am also quite excited by the prospect of an edit that is felt throughout and spread throughout many of the films sequences hopefully providing a nice alternative and extended cut whilst trying to also restore the color to normal neutralizing the yellow tint totally and restoring some small snippets of missing audio.

Very little has changed about what I plan to do, I hope to give the film a slightly more mature or bit of a slightly darker tone whilst retaining the uplifting moments also unchanged. I hope to install a small amount of gore to it also but not anything too much.

Barring the final 2 chapters of the film if you want to see what any particular shot or small sequence currently looks like then I will happily post where I am at with it.

I have quite a busy week this week so I won’t be working on it too much. But I would be eager to start any sort of discussion at this time about what the film should look like… I’d like to know what anyone here thinks it should look like?

Basically this week is a good week for discussion on the original look of stargate if anyone is interested.

My sources for reference were.

Pioneer DVD (original theatrical)
Documentary “Making of Stargate” French DVD
Secrets of Stargate CD-rom

I think you are doing some nice work on this. And I like what you have.

I know you said it is final, and you can have your project however you want it I really don’t mind.

But have you ever considered dropping the bottom end or shadow value by about 10% - 15%.

The reason I am saying this is because I am looking at the green lights up the top of the frame and I wondered if it would bring out a better range. I think it looks very nice but I think you should step your brightness lower at shadows, slightly dipped in the mids and leave your tops exactly where they are. This would not work for outside scenes in the desert for instance.

But in scenes like this, in a darkened space or room you may need to compensate your brightness in terms of the environment.

I’ll let you decide but I really do like your result in terms of the color.

give it a try?

Yeah I have the blu ray for it but it is still got issues. Some shots are going to be like you never seen it before just because a hand full of shots are way off.

I will probably replace the wormhole sequence with an updated version. So it will have some CGI actually. And fixes.

It is going to be good… I have a good feeling about it.

And I have wanted to do it for ages

I think it’s just nice to keep it all of a similar quality. Add all the extra missing sound add the extra footage where I can. Get the colors right or as close as I can. Mix sources where needed.

So far I am about 1 hour 10 minutes through a first Color pass after 3 days. If this had been Enter the Dragon which I put on hold for the moment although I could finish that in a day or 2 probably you could add 12 months on and off to that from start point on that film I love it but I am sick of it.

It is actually a sigh of relief to work on something that is not a complete nightmare. It’s a very gorgeous looking film too.

I am going to steer quite clear of adding any personal revisionist strokes but I might add a simple few things. I plan to replace the dodgy looking planet when the pyramid ship is leaving Abydos orbit. There will be a lot of revisionist edits but all we be done in good taste and nothing too radical. The deleted footage is radical enough. Re-arrangements and simple edits. No fancy CGI at all.

A few interesting discoveries I have made whilst making my way through the footage.

When they are in Nagada city at night and they look up again at the Eye of Ra gong thing it is the same shot as in the day shown previously and not at night.

When Kurt Russell is knocked un-concious when we cut to him out for the count he is lying on a sandy floor not the marble type floor in the pyramid hall chamber.

When one of the Guards shoots at Kurt Russell and James Spader escaping when rescued from outside the pyramid by the people of Abydos. One shot is of a Guard shooting inside the pyramid entrance hall which is meant to appear much later in the film. There also happens to be a deleted scene of the correct guard shooting outside the pyramid in the desert so how they got mixed up I don’t know?

Double Feature DVD is the closest but I still don’t think it is right.

it has a turqouise / Blue to it.

I would say the double feature DVD was boosted up a bit but it carries the trait of the turqoise blue tint in some respects.

Basically buy the Book by Larry Milne and inside there are photos in the middle. I think they are accurate or pretty much correct and they look like they have been taken from a film print. They have that film quality to them.

I’d like to see it look like the photo’s in the book anyway.

All of those dvd and Blu-rays are wrong.

It looks well different If you take into account the Gozer images. She is meant to be surrounded by Blue not pink.

It’s basically missing loads of Blue. But it needs to be as dark as the original DVD.

Why do films always lose Blue first?

old DVD would be OG 2.0.

Immortal Edition is 5.1 in the UK we don’t get the OG 2.0 mix on that disc.

Blu Ray is missing “This is the quickening!” Jumping off the cliff as it is still the 5.1 mix that missed a few bits of audio. Not sure about the 4k remaster Blu ray?

American audio differences “I want to go home” and New york new york song I have never heard them only ever read about them. There could be more?

The 5.1 mix adds the whooshing sounds when immortals are near one another this was a revision that came with the immortal edition.

Ok I a ploughing full steam ahead in to this.

I am using the French DVD as my main Video source.

I am trying to restore everything and anything I can to it. I’m just trying to do Color correction for the whole film at this time and recreate the original look or close to it.

It looks good. I’ll post a video clip soon probably without audio as I am not too concerned about this at the moment.

Pink at the top and yellow in the midtones eugh what a horrible choice of color tints that are being undone. I am using the deleted clips and old pioneer DVD as color references. The deleted clips are the best color reference. Somewhere there is a very nice looking version of Stargate. There will be another one soon…

The blue curtains are correct. Just the pink mid tones are not.

The original old DVD I have has that line when they jump off the cliff Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert and Ramirez shouts “this is the quickening!”

This is missing in the new versions…

But in all versions if you compare princes of the universe intro song the actual song they released sounds better than the home video version. It’s like missing bass or something or too tinny.

I think it would be worth a fix. Just saying.

I have never heard the American Sound mix with “I want to go home” and anything else it has in it that differs from the European cut. I have only ever seen the European version.

One of the other differences is “New York New York” Song something to do with the Radio and Kurgan playing the song or something that is a difference between the American Version and the European version I think I read. Have not heard the American version though…

well if I could make the Blu-ray look like those still images I would. I spent quite a few hours on the bridge scene the rest of the film is not too bad. You can get some good results by simply applying a few Luts for everything in the film bar the bridge scenes which leaps about in color quite wildly.

I really did improve it a lot but…

In some shots the ropes on the bridge are pretty much pitch black and you can’t get the detail from any bottom end or shadows.

In my opinion it’s worth using another source for the bridge scenes some shots are just too far gone and ruined by what they did with the massive blue tint and probably darkening.

It’s also very difficult to get the red out when there is a big blue tint.

I have not looked at any other sources but I am pretty sure that they destroyed detail on the bridge with the weird color scheme.

Lazy color grading rather than commit to sorting out an issue.

Yeah that is fine. I have never seen the scene with detective Bedsoe in his Car from American Theatrical…

And I’d like to hear “I want to go home” at the end after Connor has the quickening to see how that works?

Damn shame about the lost footage and soundtrack all being lost in a fire.

Although I have all the soundtrack from what was left presumeably from demo tapes put to CD it’s not the best quality for the unused music. There is still some very good stuff there.

I am sure if Russell Mulachy could have done he would have extended the European cut with the Kurgun fight in the office building. Don’t know why he did’nt use some of the deleted material he did have though.

Don’t like the new whooshing sounds added when an immortal is near in the new versions.

Oh yeah another thing “Princes of the Universe” intro song always sounds so thin is it like this in the American version?

Just to add to my post above, it turns out there was another VHS release of the shorter international edit at the same time as the Finnish release, apparently from the same distributor (CIC/Esselte Video) - this time a Swedish release under the title Fruktans Lön (http://3filmer3dygn.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/fruktans-lon.html). I’ve put out some feelers on trying to get a copy of either, but haven’t had much luck either way. Will keep trying in the meantime, and am planning a split-screen comparison between the German TV rip and the Universal DVD sometime soon.

Here’s YouTube links to the opening credits of both the German and Czech versions of the shorter cut (the former with a Czech dub overlaid).
German - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nFXcEm4N4k
Czech - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qAmIYsBBLo

Also found something interesting while doing comparisons between the old fullframe DVD and the Warner Blu-Ray; namely, that while the font and timings are different, the subtitles are otherwise 99% the same in terms of content between both versions, including a number of typos that are carried over.

However, judging by this photo of a 16mm print (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/ryhffmn/007b_zps797c3584.jpg), it appears that the DVD subtitles are not the original theatrical subtitles, as might originally be assumed. The sentence seen here is split between two subtitles on the DVD and Blu-Ray.

Any joy on finding the English Audio for the TV Cut?

Yeah I agree the subtitles don’t look of the time and I think the subtitles look a lot better and more fitting on the 16mm print. But I’ll stick to my opinion about them still needing an overhaul being only what was translated from the script made the subtitles and no more than that.

I’m ok with the odd word not being translated but the film needs that font in the 16mm print and have proper translation for the foreign language it would make such a difference and enhance the film so much more. I really do think it’s a real shame not only in terms of the look but the content also. Fix typo’s?

I really look forward to the comparsion.

There is something else I need to add and it is a censored scene I think when Roy scheider hit’s the terrorist with the shovel (2nd time) there is a weird jump cut there and I am sure there is a censorship cut at this point. I don’t think the footage is available in any version? Not talking about the TV cut I am talking about the Blu-ray release.

alternatively it’s a possible re-cut / reshuffle. Add it to the list of questionable cuts. I think what is more likely is that the shots of Schneider using the shovel were originally meant to be inter cut with Nilo shooting at the terrorists and getting shot himself. I think it’s a much more likely scenario that, that sequence should be un-jumbled and re-cut how it was probably meant to inter cut between Nilo and Shovel killing.

100% confirm the scenes are shuffled no censorship cut. This is evidenced by the gunshot in the sound mix when Schneider / Scanlon makes his second attack with the shovel. Nilo has already been shot and all the terrorists also by this point so who could possibly fire the gun if they have all been shot. The Remnant gunshot 100% confirms the re-edit possibly due to censorship though as the 1st shovel attack was cut from the European version.

Also this!!!

^ Not sure I remember the whole truck blowing it’s back load at this point but anyway color me interested in that as an oddity or perhaps a single crate goes off? It looks fairly distant from the back of the truck… Perhaps he gave a box to one of the terrorist hoping he would blow himself up god knows? Considering the different costumes I think that is a promo image or a total alternate take. This seems to be Serbian.

The European cut was also released in India apparently

Have you searched for the Australian release it is apparently the same as the European release? Or it might be the same as the European release?

This image above looks great and honestly it needs to look like this not what I did I just had a guess. But I am going to have a go at this scene just to see what I can get out of it.If I can make it like this I’ll post it.

I think the saturation is too much on the Blu-ray I think it could do with being de-saturated somewhat and color graded and should I add corrected also where needed. The truck scene is bad how they altered the colors but I don’t mind the way the film looks just it’s a bit too over green. I would happily accept a totally new color grade on this film even if somewhat revisionistic (not totally different but in the spirit) slightly de-saturated and corrected where needed.

I’ll share a lut that can be used up until the trucks on the bridge scenes that is an adequete correction and enhancement in my opinion. Or at least it is a starting block to try and rectify the blue ray in some capacity and it’s not particularly radical.

LUT

Shadows 41.96 degrees 1.97% value 119.39%
Midtones 226.26 degrees 3.74% value 110.20%
Highlights 233.62 degrees 1.25% value 100%

Main Saturation -12%

Blue Gamma 0.93
Red and Green Gamma 1.0

Red Contrast 9.33%
Green contrast 17.33%
Blue contrast 30.67%

Bias Sauration -5.33%
Scale Saturation 4%
Scale Value -4%

The truck scenes on the bridge although I can improve it and have improved it I am not sure it’s recoverable to any sort of original look I think it’s been screwed up. What’s the french blu ray like?

^ another example of this similar color grade which at the moment I can not reproduce. This is a bit more cyan but that could be the poster.

Actually there is nothing really ethically wrong with the technology there is depending on use and like you say it could be used to frame people.

What is more likely is that Video and Audio evidence are less likely to be considered as a means of evidence on how easy it is to manipulate.

that is more likely than halting advances technology.

This could certainly spell an end to the CCTV cameras everywhere if they can not be submitted as evidence or it makes it lesser evidence. It’s actually pretty sketchy anyway even now and I don’t think anyone can be charged by CCTV alone unless it’s like a traffic or parking or speeding.(Racketeering / fund raising in some cases especially parking and congestion zones)

I think you still need a witness / victim and some sort of complaint to compliment any footage with most crimes at least I think that sounds about right?

I think it’s a nice job. I do think you need more blue in some capacity in there though and there is a value issue there too.

Those strip lights in the falcon cockpit they are not ever meant to be cyan. At least “I don’t think they are” so it may mean you have too lower value and a bit of color missing in the mid range for which would probably fall on red as you have the cyan strip light.

Just saying I do think it looks nice though but it’s still got something missing, but I would say you are close to getting there and you are definitely heading in the right direction.

This is a comparison what is weird is that, I thought the THX music by Lalo schifrin was meant to play in the conference room.

At least the part that actually is sampled from Lalo schifrin to make the THX sound theme.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWkJ86JqlPA

Basically this get’s a bit weirder now because it seems the music was changed or I’m totally wrong which I could be.

But I am pretty sure I have seen a version that has that sample used in the THX sound theme used in the conference room when they are all looking at him?

Again I could be wrong but looking at the comparison video it does not seem to be the case at all.

No I just have not looked to be honest with you. That sounds pretty good.

Fixing the music cues back to how they were meant to be basically. And also perhaps how it should look originally if it’s way off. I understand taking the computer displays back to their original form that makes sense it adds to the grit.

That music cue change in the conference room was well bad and unneeded. Not sure if there are more of them?

Although it would have been better to match DVD and Laserdisc not Blu-ray and Laserdisc.

Myself personally I don’t mind the updated version but the messed up music cue in the conference room where everyone is staring is I think perhaps one of the worst changes.

I don’t mind the updated effects too much and alternate material but don’t mess up the music cues!

I would be just as happy with a hybrid version that has these sorts of fixes and stuff. What ever works best. Although I probably won’t download it anyway but still.

I’d be just as happy with a fixed hybrid version. or a halfway house mix although I am aware it’s a preservation I’m not bothered by the changes in most respects it’s a much better special edition than star wars trilogy.

What to do with Mentally Ill People?
Time

^ Yeah it’s legacy nobody wants the burden of.

But then Mental illness erupts in society and causes massive upset and people then use “mental illenss” as a scape goat to try and justify why something happened.

Rather than nobody identified any particular mentally ill person was nearing a danger point where they would cause others or themselves harm.

It’s pretty sick that this even needs to be discussed.

I had a friend who hung himself from a tree in the park who was schizophrenic. This is just as bad that this sort of self harm behavior is not identified before it happens also.

I don’t think it’s good enough the care for the mentally ill.

Give them tablets tell them to take them, they stop taking them shit happens.

I don’t think mentally ill people are getting the proper care and attention they need.

This guy who I have had problems with for over a year has really been left to neglect. Although he is something like 30 odd years old his parents I don’t think really want to keep having to bring him up at this age. They are almost in denial of his condition it would seem.

I suppose that is the other problem Parents don’t want to be full on parents for their whole lives.

I think it really is a serious issue in this day and age and we have had a spate of Mentally ill people doing things recently.

Take the depressed airline pilot that took the whole plane down to kill himself killing all the innocent passengers.

That Finnish bloke who got a sniper rifle shot loads of people

Mentally ill people can be very competent humans beings but if either it’s not classified at the right moment or it’s not treated and sick and aggressive ideas take hold really bad things can happen.

My upset and being treated nastily are not on the scale of the news headlines mental illness horror.

But it’s a really serious issue and it does really need to have a lot more resources chucked at it.

It’s difficult to tackle but it really does need to be tackled much better than it currently is. I don’t know how but it’s not good enough in my book.

What to do with Mentally Ill People?
Time

just thought this might be an interesting subject for debate.

I am currently having issues with a mentally ill person one that is aggressive. He has cracked my plasterboard ceiling from stomping his foot full force on his floor my ceiling,

I have to be upset with verbal abuse and aggression ongoing and not retaliate because then I would probably be held as knowingly and consciously being like that whilst the mentally ill person get’s let off for being like a complete asshole and not only causing damage to where I live but I have to put up with someone that sounds like they want to kill me!!!

It’s a complicated issue and It seems in the UK the stance has been taken to let mentally ill people live among if you like people who are not mentally ill as it is “Better for them” is it better for the community as a whole though?

Should mentally ill people have a more soft integration with the community by and large?

Or should people accept that mentally ill people can get away with more than they can because they are mentally ill and can not play by the same rules?

This is not a political correctness debate but people will make excuses for people having mental issues and is it fair that people who are classified as mentally ill can get away with more than someone who is not?

I am not against or trying to single out people with mental illness but where do you draw the line and particularly if someone is aggressive?

Is a mentally ill person who is just weird more acceptable than an aggressive person with mental illness I would think the answer to that is yes all round and if a weird mentally ill person is just weird very little issues with that it is not causing any strife…

But if a mentally ill person is aggressive I think personally it should be contained away from the community or society if and where possible and not let them cause problems for others or cause problems for themselves…

Have anyone here any thoughts about the mentally ill in the community and any stories to tell?

No hard feelings and I think we can put this all down to being misunderstood.

I am trying to figure out what something looks like in reality more or less without the warts you want to recreate the perfect wart. I don’t mean to come across as condescending to you what so ever.

I was simply taking interest in trying to figure out what color the lighting actually was rather than trying to recreate a yellow looking 70’s film.

And that is where the misunderstanding 100% is resting between us.

I think it is very clear.

And let me be clear. If you can figure out what something is meant to look like in reality approximately without any Warts.

When you compare it to several versions with Warts you can understand how each of your sources is altering or differing from what it looked like in reality approximately. And how much say a certain source is altering what it would look like in reality.

you can then infer a difference of how much each of your references is off by to come to a mean average.

So I was trying to be helpful in a lateral way but you simply have not grasped that.

Nevermind & Good Luck
