Star Wars: <strong>The Rise Of Skywalker</strong> Redux Ideas thread

I know there have been edits where Luke doesn’t die at the end of TLJ, but there’s really no way to explain his absence in IX if he is actually alive still. The effort might be to try to improve his characterization, but I think it would actually make him look worse. And can’t shoot or cgi new scenes with Luke in any feasible way. Maybe you could put TLJ scenes of Luke into TROS, but I don’t think it would be very seamless.

I think the fixation on lineage and bloodline is exactly why I personally felt she didn’t need to be related to anyone.

Need Some Advice Regarding MKV to MP4 File Conversion
Time

I primarily use Premiere and After Effects to edit video, but I’m running into an issue regarding file type. Premiere and AE don’t recognize mkv files, so I’m trying to convert my mkv file to mp4 using Handbrake. The thing is, it is a pretty large video file, and trying to do a lossless conversion is going to take several hours. I’m just curious what other methods people use, because I’m just worried my method is really inefficient.

If you do use Handbrake, I’d love to know what settings you use. This is rather new to me and I’m just worried I’m not going about this process the right way.

Also, if you are an After Effects user, if you’re editing a particular shot that is part of a larger video clip, would you export the individual clip first, or throw the entire video file into your After Effects project. It seems like working with an individual clip or two would be easier on the program, but perhaps it is an extra unnecessary step.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!

Yeah. Maybe some vfx could be used to just not have her say anything, like you said.
If that doesn’t work, you could show her turn around and look up, but right before she speaks, you cut to the window shot as they jump to hyperspace. Hmm. I mean, she could still say hope, but you just don’t see her say it. Or, you just leave the question the captain asks open. OR, don’t have the captain ask that question at all. Just have her hand it to her.

I desperately tried to keep Bor Gullet in when I first tried to do a fan-edit of Rogue One, but it seems to be one of the elements of the movie most people dislike. And I can understand, because it makes you think that Bodhi will be crazy, but he just shakes it off by the time we get to the next scene.

I also agree about the Leia stuff. I do think the deep fake looks more like Carrie, but the mouth still looks bad. It doesn’t really matter to me which version is used, because as soon as she opens her mouth you can tell something is off. It would be nice if you could cut away from her face before she says, “Hope.” Maybe cut to a shot of R2, or just cut to the final shot.

Now that the 4K version is out, and people are saying it has the most visual improvement out of the new collection, it might be time for me to go back and finish it.

Apparently Pablo Hidalgo suggested an ending where Ben goes to exile on Ahch-To, so that would be a cool option too.
You could have Ben watching the sunsets like Luke did at the end of TLJ, so Rey and Ben are looking at sunrise/sunsets and each other from across the galaxy.

I think it could be a little challenging to find footage of Ben that would fit that location though.

Dom's (Possibly) Useful TROS Edit (WIP)
Time

I’ve said this before, but I have a conspiracy theory that early on Rian wanted to set up Finn and Poe together, but they were reluctant to approve of it. This was a big reason why Rian split them up and created Rose’s character. So instead of Poe and Finn kissing in the end, it was Finn and Rose.

I don’t think it is true, but if we ever found out it was, I would definitely say,

“I knew it!”
– Poe Dameron

You have been going back through and rereading the thread recently, haven’t you? 😂

Thanks for sharing! The battlefront stuff was something I was looking at using for this idea at the time. I still think it would be a nice way to end Chewie’s story, but I think it would take a lot of work to make it seamless. I’ve kind of moved on from this idea now.

Yeah, I also had the thought of inserting one or two Gungans among the Resistance. You could take them from Gungan Alliance scene from TPM and put them in the background of one of the Resistance briefings.

It could be cool to swap out the head of one of the human Resistance members with a Gungan, so they could be wearing Resistance garb. Maybe you could use Jar Jar’s head, since it is a little higher quality than background Gungans, but recolor it slightly so he looks like a different Gungan.
But if they’re in the background, you could just blur them slightly to better hide the 1999-era CGI.

If you combine the ROTJ and TROS celebrations, you also could stick the Naboo shot in right before it cuts back to everyone returning to the Resistance base.

Unusual <strong>Sequel Trilogy</strong> Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

I’m sure this will be an idea that doesn’t appeal to everyone, but I’ve been trying to think of ways to imply that Anakin was responsible for bonding Rey and Ben together as a dyad in the Force.

I had been trying to think of a clear way to resolve the conundrum between Anakin being the “Chosen One” who was destined to bring balance to the Force, according to George, but Palpatine returning and then being taken down by Rey and Ben in the Sequel Trilogy. If Rey and Ben together are meant to represent the light and the dark coming together, a literal manifestation of balance, it would be rather appropriate for Anakin to be responsible for that connection, and potentially the one figure that has the power to create such a bond, besides the Force itself.

I also think it ties into George’s lore with the Mortis gods a little, for those of you who’ve watched the Clone Wars. The Father kept balance between the light side, the Daughter, and the dark side, the Son, which eventually fell apart. Now, Anakin restored balance between the light side, Rey, and the dark side, Ben. Palpatine mentions that a dyad in the Force had been unseen for generations, so perhaps the Daughter and the Son at one point were also a dyad in the Force.

Anyway, just thought it was a simple way to tie together the Chosen One/dyad/balance stuff. Not really sure how to illustrate that idea in the films themselves, though. Maybe through the Jedi voices? Hmm.

I also liked that moment in the DotF script, but it would be hard to set up Hux even having a lightsaber, as well as filming a brand new scene with him using it. That’s why I think it would be easier to replace a few shots and see him engulfed by the explosion. Since Hux is responsible for the stormtrooper program, it would be really fitting for two ex-stormtroopers be the ones that get to kill him off. There’s also an extra bit of irony in the fact that Hux was aiding the Resistance in order to undermine Kylo Ren and eventually replace him, because by helping Finn escape earlier in the film to screw over Kylo, it allowed Finn to return and kill him. I just like the idea of Hux’s spite for Kylo Ren and his own creation (the stormtroopers) being his downfall.

Haha, that is a good way to summarize it!

It definitely makes me think Rey’s story in IX should’ve focused on her wrestling with the varying expectations people have for her. Leia and the Resistance expect her to be the heir to the Jedi legacy, Palpatine wants her to become the next Sith and Empress of the Empire, and Kylo Ren wants her to join him and start a brand new order. In the end, Rey makes her own path.

We actually know that the scene of Kylo interrogating Chewie was filmed. John Williams recorded a track called “Chewie’s Interrogation” that was obviously intended for that scene.

Really interesting thread! This could be useful over on the fanediting threads as well, for people who might be interested in rescoring parts of the film.

I think there is truth to that too! Especially considering Carl Jung heavily influenced Joseph Campbell, who some consider to be “the grandfather” of Star Wars.

There is actually a bit of intersection between Jungian psychology and Taoist philosophy, when it comes to ideas of self-actualization.
