“The Ride of a Lifetime" - book by Bob Iger. Lucas mention.
Time

I"m a little curious to what their metrics are for using or not using his story. I’m guessing them not following his treatment beat-for-beat translates as “not using his treatment”. But, there does seem be some elements and story ideas that did carry over from his treatments to the films so far. Not everything, like the Darth Talon-inspired character, Felucia as a location, possibly multiple Skywalker grandchildren. On the other hand, Luke in exile, one of the grandchildren turning to the dark side, the Uber character, exploring the nature of the Force, all seem to be things that may have origins in George’s treatments.

I think a big example of this is Luke in exile. Luke did seem to be in exile in George’s Episode VII, but he apparently came out of hiding when the Kira character came looking for him, but Ardnt kept running into the issue of Luke taking the spotlight before we have time to relate with the new characters, so that was shifted.

Another thing seems to be a Skywalker grandchild falling to the dark side. That did seem like a story point, but potentially something that happened in the first movie (or in flashbacks?). I think George has issues with killing his darlings, but at the same time Iger seems to describe it as not using his treatments at all, when there clearly seems to be some elements that were carried over. But like I said, maybe since they decided not to use the general plot, but kept some ideas, was enough to considered it as “not using his treatments”.

It is nice that we got insight from Iger, and a little surprising that he admits that he could’ve handled it better with George. If anything, this just makes me really want a Making of The Force Awakens book!

That’s why I think if we had gotten these same stories in the medium of these pulpy books, with Rey and Kylo Ren hand-drawn on the covers, a lot of people who dislike or are on the fence about the ST would enjoy them more. Maybe partly because the book medium allows people to use their own imagination on certain details, and maybe because books can provide more context and internal thoughts as well.

The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)
Time

Sort of what I’ve been picturing:

Finn: Where’s Rey?

Cut to same island shot. Then cut to Rey entering frame, looking back Chewie, R2 and the Falcon. An abridged approach to the cliff, trying to avoid repeating shots. Use the same music as Rey’s first scene in TLJ, Rey reaches the top and it cuts to the empty cliff side on the swell of music (originally the musical point where Luke tosses the saber). She then goes back down to the village. Luke shuts the door before she can see him. She knocks, stands there, looks around. Looks toward the ocean and cut to the insert of the X-Wing submerged in the water.

When you cut to Luke in the hut, you also can cut the shot of him folding his ceremonial robes.

The new Snoke clip is good Nev! I love the way you handled him standing up. I do think it’d be good if something could be done to “the light” line to make it match the way the rest of the dialogue sounds more. It isn’t a big deal, just stands out a little to me still.

EDIT: Also, I certainly don’t think this should be a priority for you at all, but if you start getting to the point where you think you might be able to release a version of this before TROS comes out, it might be worth looking into having a simple edition of TLJ that would fit with the way TFA: Starlight ends. Basically it could just be the same film with an alternate first scene with Rey. Or a preexisting TLJ edit that you like with that alternate first Rey scene inserted. Just suggesting this because it might be a good idea for people who might want to watch TFA:Starlight and a TLJ edit before seeing IX.

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **

I’ve felt having even one or two female voice lines could help make it clearer that stormtroopers aren’t clones, because if you just watch the movies you might not know. Or even if the male voices could sound more varied and different than they currently do. But this is a nitpicky thing.

Alright, I don’t agree everything you said, but this one is something I wholeheartedly agree.

As far as I can recall, other than the damned prequels, there isn’t a single mention of Luke and Leia’s mother in OT. Which is kind of weird in a way and it would be really nice have a little mention like this.

I wouldn’t want Vader to say “Padme”, but a line like “Your Mother once thought as you do.” would fit perfectly.

I agree completely. Even if it’s not for ady, it’s a change I’d love to see someone figure out some day.

James Earl Jones has done an audio of the entire bible, I’m sure the phrase “Your Mother” is in there somewhere.

Someone at some time did this.

Ridley did a few good attempts on the Collaborative thread last year.

I think it makes more sense for stormtroopers to be drafted gender-neuttally, since they’re just faceless grunts that are nothing more than cannon fodder and sheer numbers would be more important than sexism.

It does make sense to me that no women would be in officer/command positions, though.

The Rise of Skywalker box office results: predictions and expectations
Time

Would you guys be interested if we made this into a little competition just for fun?

I can keep track with predictions on a excel spreadsheet (or someone else can help me with that). I can buy some Episode IX merch, and whoever gets closest to the domestic and international numbers I could mail it to them or something. I thought about just bragging rights but I think actual prizes would be sort of fun! (unless for some reason that goes against any rules we have on the site)

I don’t know why Disney is so allergic to the episode numbers for the films. You would think that would make it easier for someone to navigate these menus.

I agree. They could at least have it on the bottom of the cover like, “Episode III”, or something. But I guess they think it’ll be simple enough for people to look it up if they don’t know. Regardless, I agree with you.

Though maybe they don’t because they don’t want laypersons to think they need to start at I. Most people would say to go in chronological order, so by not having the episodic numbers it might encourage people to watch in an order that is based off their displayed release dates.

It is cool how they really seem to taking full advantage of their platform by adding stuff like documentaries and old cartoons, and not just the expected shows and movies. Thanks for sharing this with us Dre!!

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *

I actually have not read it! I’m familiar with it and some of its ideas through its place in science fiction, its comparisons to Star Wars, and the Lynch adaptation (which I’ve never watched all the way through). I don’t know I haven’t read it yet, I know it is considered a classic and I’ve been wanting to pick it up, but now that movie is coming out I thought about holding off and getting my perspective on the film through a non-reader lens. Maybe we could discuss the film and compare our thoughts once it comes out since you are a repeat reader and I’ve never picked it up.

I will say the director, Denis Villenueve, is basically the best pick to adapt it. He is also a book fan, and all of his films have been pretty great (most recently Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049), and it has a stellar cast line up. I think they’ve split it into two parts in order to not cram in as much just in two hours. I think it is promising, and if he can’t adapt it satisfyingly I don’t think anyone can!

Star Wars Episode III: Labyrinth Of Evil (Released)
Time

@Dom, we should bump your thread back up and discuss what you’ve done and more on what the original scene order might’ve been. I’m still wondering if Anakin was late for the briefing because he met with Padmé, does that mean the entire nightmare scene was reshoots?

I think I agree with Octorox too. It seems that you’re already leaning that way as well.

When Padmé as Queen is looking out her palace window as the battle droids march up the streets of Theed, you could have create new off-screen dialogue of a guard or handmaiden regarding the switch or decoy.

Something like, “Hurry, your Highness, your decoy is ready.”
or
“Your decoy is in position. We need to disguise you quickly!”

When Obi-Wan calls her Your Highness during the briefing, maybe you could somehow re-implement Anakin’s reaction shots from her theatrical reveal. I guess this would be the first time Anakin would realize it in this version, but I don’t think it is hard to assume everyone else was informed offscreen, if they didn’t already know.

Thank you! Yeah, we’re just coming at with different viewpoints, and I’ve found that viewpoints definitely evolve over time. So to me all our conversations are about learning different perspectives and interpretations. So hopefully in the end we can both acknowledge criticisms and find things to appreciate about it.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *

It is not a cynical message at all in my opinion. I think this story is for everyone, but to me, most of all, it is for those people who feel like they have lost everything. People whose greatest fears came to true (like Luke, Han and Leia).

Not to get too personal, but these last few years of my life have been some of the hardest for me. Personal loss, betrayal, a lot of mistakes, and total failure. I recently had to start back at square one, and it almost feels like my life is repeating itself. Maybe that is why I relate to the new movies so much. I’ve experienced what feels like history repeating itself, my greatest fears manifesting, really doubting any hope for the future. So I think I can really relate with the emotions the characters are going through. And since these characters function as role models of a sorts, seeing them at their lowest point after they thought things were good, and being able to persevere and still find that hope is really powerful to me.

So maybe not everyone can immediately relate to that, but I think in some shape or form most if not all people go through that experience of being at their lowest point, and that is who I think this story is for. If our heroes can come back from their greatest fears coming true, then maybe I can too.

That is totally not what I took from the movie. It seems like you’re taking a super depressing message whereas I see a really hopeful one. Unless I’m misinterpreting you. Our failures and mistakes make us think we aren’t capable of becoming who we want to be, but if we continue to believe in ourselves we can overcome our failures and eventually become who we want to be. Luke doesn’t think he is the legend people believe in, but in the end he once again believes in himself and truly becomes that legend. In TLJ, the legend has both tangible and symbolic value.

The way you describe Lucas’ work is exactly what happens in RJ’s work. Luke overcomes his flaws and reaches a state of enlightenment.
